My brother and I discussed the day when Revolver came out. In 1966 we had this crappy mono player and yet it was the first time when my brother's realized when a Lp was an excellent record. We played it through and immediately played it all again. We realized for the first time if a record is exceptional, you play it multiple times without interruptions. At that time in 1966, none of us can remember discussing sonic issues. It was just an excellent record. The first mono issue we wore out in less than 3 years. This latest release took us back to the time of reflection and we are very grateful to all those technicians and engineers who give their all to improve this fantastic album.

ATOC has another name, known to every broadcaster and recording engineer on this planet. It’s called “Limiting”. It has always struck me as a bit strange that some of the best compressor/limiters ever made are British, yet on so many British recordings, they don’t seem to know how to use these brilliantly designed and built pieces of equipment to their best advantage. Oh well… life is FULL of mysteries. What is NOT a mystery is just how good Andrew is at making these videos!

i actually really love the panning of the effects on tomorrow never knows. the left-right movement of the effects and also the reverse guitar solo, combined with ringo’s drumming, almost makes the song feel like a clock, with the effects swinging back and forth like a pendulum. it creates an incredibly psychedelic and otherworldly effect that i love!

About the funeral feel of the border: Revolver is almost a concept LP about death. Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, Love You Too, She Said She Said and Tomorrow Never Knows mention it directly, while other songs hint at loss. Lyrically as well as sonically it’s a fascinating essay and worthy of the title ‘masterpiece’. Thanks for this review, watched on the edge of my seat in trepidation to see if my £169 was a worthy spend. Phew!

Revolver is my favorite Beatles album. What this remix does that the others didn't do was keep the overall sound of the album intact. I'm fairly happy with it overall, but one thing I wish Giles did was use the mono mix as a basis for how the remix should sound and expand the mono like he did with Sgt Pepper, rather than make a tighter and cohesive stereo mix, like he did here. Overall, though, I'm extremely happy with the remix. I did buy the CD set, and I was disappointed with how flimsy the sleeves were that held the discs and how cheap they felt. Your in-depth analysis has made me want to start dropping hints for the vinyl set so I can have how the set is supposed to be. I seriously hope that Giles and his team next turn their attention to the post-Pepper/pre-White Album era that includes the exclusive songs for the Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour films, the single A and B sides "All You Need Is Love", "Baby You're A Rich Man", "Hello Goodbye", "You Know My Name" -- and a version included of it's original 6:12 length, "Lady Madonna", "The Inner Light" and the original version of "Across The Universe". This period should not be erased or lost to time. It should be given the same treatment of everything else so far.

I agree about She Said She Said being shocking on first listening, however the entire Revolver remix is really good in my opinion. I have no complaints about Tomorrow Never Knows, I like the panning. I really can't imagine it sounding any other way now. I absolutely love it! Thank you for the excellent summary and explanation of the funereal black band, especially with the cute nod on the envelope. As for the mystery caller, who is Jeff/Geoff? Mr. Emerick? Too scary but timely for Halloween. Again, another great video!!! As for the box opening, this is to sit properly on your shelf like the original LP's with front cover in front. So you can pull the LP's from the open, and when you are perusing your collection you can see the front cover.

My theory on the left handed opening is for you to put all the LPs spines facing out and then put the whole box on the shelf like a regular bunch of records. So if you want to take one out you can identify it without necessarily pulling the whole box out.

Much of the good qualities I thought the remix had also were obvious in the mono (except soundstage of course) with a great 3D presentation. I’m hoping Rubber Soul is next off the rank for this treatment and can’t wait.

Andrew, I believe the box opens to the left so the record spines can be seen and accessed individually along with the book when oriented “correctly” on a shelf. Also if the box opened to the right, the discs would have to be oriented “backwards” in relation to the cover in order to access them individually from the shelf and to keep them from having the open end of the sleeves on the outside with the potential to slip out when moving the box. It seems if you are going to have a vinyl box set in which the records slip out from one end, the most logical and user friend is from the left especially when having a die cut feature such as Let It Be.

I think it's nice that all these versions are available. Some people want to hear the extra hum at the beginning of "Taxman," they have the option to do so with the earlier versions. Some people are acting like the new mix somehow made the older versions disappear from their collections. EDIT: regarding the orientation of the spines in the slipcase, they're supposed to be like that. Slipcases didn't originally have any ornamentation and the books (i.e. the slipcase contents) are displayed spine side out.

I don't see these original stereo mixes as "quick jobs". I think the engineer and producer when they worked on a stereo mix already had a good idea of what to do, since they had just finished working on the mono version, so it wouldn't take much time. Maybe they even had some afterthoughts and changed little things on the stereo version. The signal path used for stereo recording was also a bit more modern and higher fidelity than the one for mono. Better level of clarity overall. Stereo was new, and people who had access to it were essentially listening on speakers, not headphones, so the producers wanted to make full use of these two channels, making some radical choices sometimes.

My biggest complaint about the remix is that on tracks with double-tracked vocals, each vocal is hard-panned left and right rather than having both combined into a tight center image. The result is a diffuse, almost out-of-phase vocal.

And in the chorus of Eleanor Rigby, Paul's lead vocal switches to the sides, and he becomes a backing vocalist with the harmonies. There's a very large hole in the middle, because the strings are split so hard left and right. Would've been nice to have the 2nd violin and viola more central. Those who are saying the quartet/octet is spread nicely over the stereo soundscape aren't listening closely.

Andrew, excellent review!! Great analysis!! For me, the new remix, while greatly improved in places, falls short in a lot of places!! I'm a remix engineer myself, & these guys did not do the work properly when it came to separate George & John's (or Paul's) electric guitars. "She Said She Said" is a bad mix, with one or both guitars completely dropping out in places. This happens on 2 or 3 other tracks as well. My biggest disappointment is "And Your Bird Can Sing". Paul & George's lead guitars are together, when it has been demonstrated that they can be COMPLETELY separated & panned left & right for a stunning mix (leaving John's guitar in the center). There are other elements like bass levels, percussion levels etc. And the stereo lead vocals are annoying. Lead vocal should be center with harmonies spread. The 2014 mono mix is the go to mix. Tiger.

Thank you, Andrew, for these instructive videos. Imagine, how old I am: I bought Love Me Do when it came out in Canada! What you have been doing with these videos (Hollies included) is simply honorable. I am so glad you raised the MONEY issue in this Revolver analysis. Yes, I find the prices outrageous. I just purchased a box set by Brian Eno and one of Chris Rea and they were a third of the price, combined not even half of the cost of this boxset. Even if I am interested in listening to this new edit, I cannot afford this pleasure. It is a large piece of what money I have to survive. And I am a real Beatles fan. These new records are simply too expensive for most of working people. So once again thank you for hinting at this highly political issue.

Wonderful review! Although I've been more enthused about the Giles mixes than you have been up to this point, I had similar experiences upon first listen to the Revolver 2022 stereo mix. At times it just felt so "off" that it was distracting. But upon repeated listens, I've come to appreciate what he and the rest of the team were able to do. Like all the other Giles mixes, they may not be meant for us but more for younger generations expecting modern production techniques. Overall I really like the box, and I'm thrilled that a mono Revolver is now properly available on streaming. Even if the 2009 mono CD may be my preference, this one is so close. And, of course, the outtakes are a gift to the fans. John's Yellow Submarine demo is nothing short of stunning.

I love Giles an Sam's remixes since the start, and I want them to go all the way through. But I can't stand For No One and Doctor Robert's new remix. The bass drum is loud enough so as to notice it's playing ahead of the bass and once I did, I couldn't concentrate on the rest of it. Maybe this was the reason it was buried down the mix on the first place. And I really miss that loud and long cymbals sound on She Said She Said. I have done a thorough listen to my original stereo and mono compared to this new set. I think Giles did an amazing job on the new stereo remix. This was the stereo mix it deserved. Everything is clearer and perfect sounding. The vinyl was flat and clean…and Giles half speed sounded rather good to me. This will be my go to way of listening to this album. The mono is ok. I just like it for the slightly different mixes. Honestly I think it is just nostalgia. There is a reason mono was abandoned. It stinks in general. Also, Sean Magee odd cat. Check out Steve Westman’s video interviewing him about cutting this mono. For me they hit this out of the park on this release with everything they gave to us. Thank you remaining Beatles and Giles. I don’t miss that hum at the beginning of the stereo remix. Does nothing for the music. I also listened to this extensively in atmos thru my AirPods Pro. It is quiet good but the surround is not super noticeable. The bleed together like the mono is something I would agree with. Great video. Love your work Andrew. Agree they should get you involved with the next one. They should have added your breakdown of how the cover was made. Cheers!

Thanks for the review Andrew! This was one of the albums that I was waiting to be remixed. I love the way it sounds. I like all of the remixes in general but this and Sgt. Pepper were my favorite (and the ones that needed it the most). The mono sounds great as well although I haven’t compared them to my 2014 and 1982 versions. The outtakes are great too. A terrific set overall. Hopefully Rubber Soul is next but for now I will focus on what we have. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with you on She Said She Said, where has the acid gone? I love the proto BritPop sound and dirt from the original. It's a miss. Same for Tomorrow Never Knows, i find the panning dubious and distracting. There is also weird panning on Love You To. The quiet tracks on this remix are the ones that fare better.

Andrew your point about mono sounding three dimensional is so spot on. I never truly enjoyed "Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds" until I heard those "ahhhs" sounding like shimmering diamonds--that was the moment I "got" mono. I agree that the mono here is fantastic while the stereo takes some getting used to. Even the correction of errors (like Paul's vocal overdub goof on Eleanor Rigby) takes me out of the mix at times. As usual another outstanding report, you are KZfaq's premier Beatles reference.

Just listened to your Feb 2023 take on the best 10 White Albums, and it reminded me that I wanted to comment on the Super Deluxe Revolver release from Oct 2022. I apologise for being one of those who are trolled for actually preferring the original hard left/hard right stereo mixes, but I was 17 when Revolver came out and I still like them better. Anyway, you mentioned the "hum" on the intro to Taxman on the original release that was now gone, and it reminded me that I did remember that hum from the 1987 CD release. So I played every version that I have: the 1966 vinyl, 1987 CD, 2009 remastered box set CD, and the Super Deluxe from 2022. Oddly, the hum was not very audible on the original vinyl, but more interestingly, the stereo mix on the 1987 CD was also different. In the very beginning of Taxman, the count-in is on the left, and the guitar noodling is on the right. I didn't fnid this on any version except for the 1987 CD, and since that was the one I had been listening to the most (22 years until the 2009 box set) I found that I really missed it on subsequent releases. I did not find it on the original vinyl, and that could be due to my copy being a US release. Does anyone have a vinyl version, Parlophone from the UK, that does have that stereo effect on Taxman??

The new mono version is the first I’ve heard where I suddenly understood what all the fuss is about with Beatles on mono. I liked the new stereo - although the bass is too loud - but have quickly settled on the new mono album version. Incredibly it sounds almost like stereo with everything separated yet sounds much more like how the Beatles have always sounded? Like a modern version of the same music.

I wonder where the remix series will end? A remixed Decca sessions or a fully cleaned up hi-res Star Club performance perhaps! Who knows what the technology will be like if they're going backwards and finally reach 1962/63. A stereo Love Me Do and She Loves You? Then there's that audience recording of the Quarrymen at the village fete...

Nice to hear that I now own the best sounding mono vinyl ever produced of Revolver. I noticed the obscured photographs on the cover, though. Even my Spanish 80s copy looks better. I do like the 2022 remix overall, but I think She said she said vocals are too loud, and lead guitar too quiet. Tomorrow never knows loops are OK dynamically panned, but are lower in volume and have less impact, IMO. The outtakes are nice, but I'm sure they could have done better with more studio chat, or rarer stuff. Take 1 of Tomorrow never knows again? The loops isolated track would have been more interesting, for instance.

Well, everyone knows 2023 is the 60th Anniversary of 'Please Please Me' and 'With The Beatles'. It would make sense to get deluxe editions of both those albums next year. There are probably not a lot of outtakes from the first two albums (especially 'Please Please Me'), so they could possibly issue them together? I think Revolver was done (out of order) to test out the demixing technology? I'm hoping they go back to the first albums next because it will be awesome to hear true stereo mixes of those albums along with the singles released in (late1962 and) 1963! The first two albums would be my guess for the next remixes.., but, it's hard to say what Apple will do next? Imagine Volume Two of Mark Lewisohn's Beatles biography 'All These Years' coming out in 2023 along with new remixes of 'Please Please Me' and 'With The Beatles'! That would be a great year for fans that especially love the early Beatles period!

Yes, the black border is another clue. You see, the car that Paul was allegedly decapitated in had a black border around the windshield and a license plate 25IF. But seriously I love the 2022 stereo remix. Ringo's cymbals really do sound clearer and there is separation between the instruments where it seemed muddy before. I find myself turning it up louder because it doesn't fatigue my ears. A really fine listening experience. I'm not so angry anymore about the lack of a 5.1 version, as it seems unnecessary, with the clarity of this new version. That's what I think.

I really loved the treatment Lucy in the Sky had on Sgt Pepper's remix and I was hoping that these songs will have a brave airy and magical mixes placing and moving the instruments in the space. The first song I listened to from the 2022 stereo mix was She Said She Said. Although the balances, clarity and pans were great I was disappointed by the sound of Ringo's cymbals, they were EQed and lost all their bass content, that makes me believe that some mix engineers think that cymbals are made of high frequencies and that's a big mistake, cymbals have all the frequencies together. Ringo used big cymbals which sounded absolutely wonderful and fat, I love their sound and it has been mutilated here. Anyway I love the overall mix of the album.

Thanks. What a great review. I've listened to the digital version of the new Revolver release a couple of times via headphones and car stereo from iTunes release and LOVED it. I particularly liked the enhanced bass and drums. I was even more impressed by the mono mix. I couldn't believe MONO could sound so good and seem to come from everywhere, like you say, the "3D" effect. So I was going to settle for the digital version in this case. Your unboxing made me begin to appreciate how tangible vinyl is. Touch. Weight. Etc. Now this review has pushed me over the edge. I guess I'll have to invest in another darn boxed set. Thanks, I guess.

4:26 as someone in the early 20s I hear that a lot from my peers. Which is pretty funny bc basically every album is initially mixed in mono to prevent phase cancelling. So if you use the mono feature on your smartphone, that’s why every modern album still sounds listenable. A good example of a stereo mix done poorly is Sympathy for the Devil by the stones. If you fold down the stereo mix, it literally kills that entire song. So much so the group had to make a mono mix for Beggars, while the rest is just a fold down. Although there are some other songs like Jigsaw Puzzle that have pretty ugly phase issues when folded down. RAM by Paul is another album that has dedicated mono mix for this reason, although it was only for radio stations and the like. Probably the last time a Beatles related project was mixed in that format. John was a really big fan of mono, which makes sense for his love of classic rock & roll. A couple songs on Plastic Ono are mixed in mono if I remember correctly.

A brilliant exposé! I loved it. The .wav files are so important to show (to me) and expertly explained! I love the differences, good or bad, in the mixing choices. Personally, nothing bad here! I never knew about the black border thing. Interesting. But the darkening of the tones of the pics on the cover should have been easily fixed with at least some desaturation. But hey, it’s a great set over all. The best I think so far. Thanks again for sharing your views! Til next time! Oh and maybe check if there is a discrepancy in speed from the vinyl set to the cd set version?👍💚🎶

Great review! To my aged ears this new mono pressing sounds as good as, if not better than, the -2/-3, so I'm glad you brought the scientific proof to back up my impression. Hopefully, a mono LP will be included in the future deluxe box sets too. Ideally, though, standalone mono releases for the Beatles ought never go OOP. The demand is always there. And yeah, the photographic elements on the front cover are looking really neglected and degraded.

I hate them removing the hum during the count in on Taxman, also how that wonderful burst of feedback at the mid point of the stereo mix of TNKs is now almost buried in the right channel. I remember feeling a similar disappointment when I first heard how they “corrected” Ken Scott’s snare drum overdub mistake after the middle instrumental section of Glass Onion on the White Album remix. Lennon loved the happy accident during the recording session. It became part of the original and all later mixes. The very Beatle that created the song made a deliberate artistic decision to retain the element in the final mix - but then it was “fixed” decades later on the Giles Martin remix. Not cool.

I agree 100%. I think Giles “fixing” these oddities and quirks is a major issue with the new mixes. I think him being forced to stay more true to the originals like Peter Cobbin was ordered to with the Yellow Submarine Songtrack remixes would be best.

Great review and it convinced me now to buy the revolver deluxe edition, despite the high price, but it came in the right time, because today Amazon offers the box for 169€ instead of 189€. Also I liked you comment about the whole 180g business, I do not like it and I wish they would stop doing this, it is useless and just makes the cover thicker which makes it harder to fit them in to a outer record sleeve. Got mine late last week and I'm rather happy with it. Only listened to the remix, outtakes, and 7" so far so I'm pretty chuffed to hear that the new mono master is an improvement on the one in the mono box, as I was rather confused as to why it was included. The new stereo mix was interesting as it gives me an idea of what could have been if they had more than 4 tracks to record on. I never really had an issue with the original stereo mix, nor on any of their other albums, as I grew up on those as a kid thanks to my dad's LP's and just thought back then that the hard panning of instruments was the way they did it back in the 60's ("Wow, we have stereo and can make it sound weird now!") and not because of technical limitations.

Absolutely brilliant as always. As fas as TNK, when we heard it at a preview listening event in New York, we heard the whole album in Atmos in a large studio and the swirling sound effects were mind blowing. As were the ending “Good Day Sunshine” harmonies in the song of the same name. I wasn’t really bothered by no hum at the beginning of Taxman. I was more enamored that we can now hear what John actually says in Dr. Robert instead of Ok Herb on the sessions disc. Lol. All in all, a well done set.

Andrew, as always, informative and insightful. I was pleasantly surprised at the new stereo mix. “She Said” IMO is great with the separated guitars. TNN doesn’t have the cohesion due to the FX panning. (Surprising they didn’t isolate each FX and place them within the stereo field. ). One thing I JUST learned is that the backwards guitar solo was lifted from the Taxman sessions & flown in. My only real complaint is the demo for “She Said’ which was sourced from a lossy bootleg. There’s other versions out there that sound much better and a shame that the collectors world wasn’t contacted, or enough research was done. In response to “fixing” things on the master (ie: Abbey Road) nothing should be tampered with, unless it’s a splice that needs repairing. Anything inherent in the original mixes should be left as is. All in all, a good sounding package
