Some birds, but not all go through what’s called the bluffing stage.
Indian Ringneck parrots are more prone to the bluffing behaviour , but not all.
Bluffing stages can happen anywhere between the age of 4 months to 1 years old and can last anywhere from 1-3 weeks, although some have been known to last much longer.
Some have said that this is brought on from hormones transitioning from a juvenile into an adult, others have said it’s behaviour brought on for survival instincts.
It is very important that you do not react to this behaviour at all, just continue as best as possible like always.
I promise you the bluffing stage will pass, but how you handle this behaviour will affect how your bird will behave long term.

Thanks for giving examples of the bluffing stage! I have a year old IRN, who recently started with these actions. I wasn't sure what Chiquita, was trying to tell me. She just starts putting her head down slightly and then opens her mouth, as if she is trying to stick her tongue out. She recently started to flutter her wings slightly as well. She has never tried to outright bite me, but I wasn't getting a warm fuzzy feeling either. She has her own issues though, which make her even more flighty than most IRNs. At 3 weeks she was removed from her parents, only to be stuck in a bin, by herself for 2 months at the bird shop. She is afraid of other birds, and even her own reflection in the mirror. She will let us help her, if she is on the ground, but at all other times she is very stand offish. About a month ago, my Dad, ended up in the hospital, and I was really sad about it and crying. She came down near me, but acted as if she wanted to comfort me, but didn't know how. Your video, helped me greatly in understanding what she is trying to tell me! So Thank you!
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn Жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear about your dad, hope he’s ok now. Chiquita sounds like she could also be hormonal from maturing as well which also causes the bluffing stages, they almost go hand in hand around this time of age. Try to be patient with her, hopefully this faze will pass. I did video about hormonal behaviours and how to deal with it, it also will help with the bluffing stages. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNOkhbV0rtfLqYU.html I also have many more in my playlist about 2 parts of body language that may help you as well. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I’m working on one as we speak. It’s just so sad to see how many are being re homed here in Canada or other places for that matter. I mean I’m all for a pet being in a better home that can provide what it needs, but there are way to many out there. Also on Facebook there are so many comments on people just bringing home a baby bird and not knowing what to do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still learning myself, but I definitely didn’t jump into anything without proper research. The only bird that kind of fell into my lap was my rescue, but I believe I was meant to have her because nobody else could handle her. I constantly get people asking me where can they get him from and what kind is he without any knowledge of birds whatsoever, or why isn’t my bird talking? It’s more painful than anything, because chances are that the bird will be re homed. So I think it’s important I make a video about that. So sorry for the long comment, just had to share that 🤔. Hope you had a fantastic day 😊

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn no no! Its okay. I agree on all points. If everybody could just realise having a pet no matter furry or feathery- it's a HUGE responsibility and commitment. I had mentioned my african grey that flew off i had had him ? 5-7 yrs before that happened I miss him still. But he was very very needy and would scream if I walked away from his cage even though he was not caged unless it was nightime. People get a handfed parrot and all it knows is that person like mama and then it's re homed cause the novelty wore off or they lose interest. So good of you to inform you are doing all the birbs in the WORLD a favor by educating future bird owners and society the pros and cons before they just rush into it! Oh I found Angel Frank and the racoon whisperer thank you very much. Ms. Frank loves her Angel just like you love Ricco! Have a great day girl, and give Ricco a cuddle from Ann!

I really hope and pray that your African grey found a loving home. I have seen it before that people do find lost birds and try to find the rightful owners without any luck and they do take great care of them Hope this is the case for your baby. I’d love to have a grey and macaws, but those are totally out of my league, it’s best I stick to what I am familiar with lol. Thank you for always being so supportive. Have a wonderful day 😊.

Oh Trust me sometimes Ricco has gotten my lips and I just want to scream, but hold it in lol. It’s a difficult time for them and us. I’m just glad that Ziggy had you, unfortunately in many other cases they are just left to live out the rest of their lives stuck in a cage because of these behaviours. @Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊 It’s interesting you asked this question, because I was just working on a video about reasons why a Indian Ringneck parrot may not be a good bird. One of the reasons was if you have a full time job, the reason being is that they are not like budgies or even lovebirds for that matter where you can have a life lol. With Indian Ringneck parrots I find because they are so active and social that they quickly go back to becoming wild after left for long periods of time alone. They may even end up resenting you for it, they also will scream murder out of boredom lol. It can even get worse depending on the bird and start to pluck. Have you owned birds in the past? I’m also on Instagram if you want to DM me. The link is in my bio.

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn Thanks for you reply :) When I was younger I had a budgie but because I lived at home with parents, they never allowed the bird inside. Because I was younger I didn’t make much effort to train the bird etc. other than ringnecks I was thinking of either a cockatiel or a conure
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 3 жыл бұрын
@@vinncent5008 I would say you might best to do your research on all three and see what would best suit you and your lifestyle . It really depends what you are looking for in the bird. They are all so different. I still think budgies are amazing in such little bodies, they have so much personality and less destructive. I had a male who talked up a storm and had such a huge personality, I would definitely get one again, they are really underrated. I also had lovebirds, they are adorable and so cuddly with such personalities as well. They really don’t have the talking abilities like other birds do, but they sure make up for it in so many ways. With any bird I’d recommend either getting one that is 6 months or younger, or adoption is always an option. This way you already can tell the personality of the bird. I hope that helps, Good luck.

I have a baby indian ringneck that's 2 months old and I'm trying to understand the bluffing stage as much as I can so that when it's time for him to go through it I will handle it the best way there is. thanks in advance :)

Thank you 🥰. For me personally both my Ringneck parrots only went through it once and they were ok afterwards. Bluffing and hormonal from breeding season are two different things and sometimes people get the two mixed up. So chances are you will notice your birds behaviour change somewhat every year during spring time when they are hormonal. It can last from a week to a month or more. Every bird will act differently during this time, my Ricco just gets more sucky and wants to be with me all the time. Some become aggressive, but just ignore this behaviour and it will pass. I did a video as well that’s in my playlist for the hormonal change due to spring. Hopefully that will help you more. Good luck with your little one, it’s great to see that you are getting prepared in advance 😊

It does take time to build trust, are you paying attention to his body language before he bites. Birds usually bite to communicate with us, so understanding why will help. Also as difficult as it may be it’s important not to react to the bites, in fact if you push into turn he will start to learn that the bites won’t work. Have you tried positive reinforcement with his favourite treats. For example when wanting him to step up and if he does reward him with a treat.

Hi! I dont have an Indian Ringneck (yet) but i do have a green cheek conure, does the bluffing stage vary on different parrots? I brought home my 4-5 month old gcc and he was doing so well, he was very sweet and cuddly. About 4 weeks later he started attacking me out of nowhere and started shredding everything.
@Riccothegreenpiedirn
@Riccothegreenpiedirn 2 жыл бұрын
Aww congratulations on your little gcc. All parrots can go through the bluffing stages, just ringneck parrots are more prone to it. Is it spring where you are from, if so it could be hormonal but he’s still very young. Try to think of anything that could’ve caused this behaviour. It could very well be the bluffing stages. They sometimes will do this when they are settled in and comfortable. If it is try not to react to this behaviour, but you still want to interact with him. Sometimes it’s just best to walk away like nothing happened and let him calm down for a bit. The worst thing to do is overreact. They will try to dominate you if you allow them and become difficult to handle, how you deal with this now is very important because it will affect how he will be with you long term. I hope that helps. Keep me updated 😊

So sorry you are going through this, especially when they change. It can be a difficult time but just keep trying. They do try too become dominant and that’s not what you want because it can get worse if you don’t correct it from now. Have you become frightened at all around him, they can sense that and will feed off of this. When it comes to bluffing it is just a faze and it will pass, but how you handle him now can affect how his behaviour can be long term.

Congratulations on your new Ringneck parrot. Your parrot will need time to adjust to his new surroundings and your home. Imagine if you were brought to a an familiar place. Take things slow with him and give him time to settle in and adjust. Rushing him into doing anything he is unsure of will brake the bond you are trying to create. Food is always a great way to win a bird’s trust. How long has he been at your home now and is he in a new age as well. Make sure to also place the cage in a spot that he feels safe in.

Offer him food through the bars or somewhere that he can get it himself without your hands. Also over time pay attention to his eyes and body language to avoid bites. So sorry to hear, it can be upsetting when they do this. Don’t take it personally, it’s just a thing they go through. The best thing you can do is not give up on her and stop interacting with her. For now I would respect her cage area if she has become territorial over it. I would suggest using treats and food every time you go near her cage and just leave it somewhere that she can see it with the door open. Just talk softly to her and don’t force her to do anything she doesn’t want to. It’s just a faze she is going through, but if you react to it it will just get more difficult for you. Do you have a flat perch or a perch at the opening of the cage door? I would recommend putting one there and sit in front of her cage with a treat or food, that way she will need to come out of her cage to get it from you. Over time have her come closer to you until you can get her to step up. It will take time and patience, but don’t give up. One day she will change back again. Most people give up on their bird around this time or stop interacting with them, but it really is the worst thing to do. Make her understand that you are not going anywhere and everything will be ok. Remember her hormones are all over the place. Do your best to just act as you would do in the past, they can pick up on our feelings. I hope that helps, keep me posted.

@@thepsychicsleuth7 can you tell me more about her, like how old she is and how long she has been doing this for. Also is it spring where you are or is she molting right now? So many different things could be causing this and if it is spring and she is bluffing it’s almost double of what you would normally get. Indian Ringneck parrots are known to go through the bluffing stage much more than many other birds. Also did you have the other birds before her or did you get them after? Does she come out of her cage at all on her own? I’m almost wondering if she has picked her cage as her nesting area and has become territorial over it because of this. They also can sense if you are afraid and will try to dominate you, but you also don’t want to yell or get angry at them. The female rescue who I took in was also going through this, but liked me for some reason. She did bite me once or twice, but never again after that. This doesn’t sound like the bluffing stages but more so like he’s become very attached to you and doesn’t know how to be independent. Does he bite you or is it he just doesn’t like being by himself? I did a video about how to bond with a bird and in the ending I did mention to be careful not to over bond because the bird will become very dependent on you. You need to teach your bird to play by himself at times and not be so needy with toys. Try leaving the tv or radio on as distractions to start. The problem is he looks at you as part of the flock. When you put him in the cage give him a treat and try doing it at the same time every day so he starts to get used to it, eventually start to lengthen the time. Even if you are home he should have time to play with himself when you are busy with toys or just relax.
