This is it: the forbidden sound. The "Bad Noise" as we call it. It's the only sound he makes that's guaranteed to damage hearing in a 10ft radius. Time-outs guaranteed. He's definitely getting into the moody toddler/tantrum phase. Send earplugs.
Apollo is our 3 year-old African Grey parrot we've had since December 2020.

I finally realized that the "Bad Noise" is what's called the Syrinx Shriek. It's normally used to startle predators, and was the original primary purpose for the syrinx, which is the organ they use to imitate sounds so accurately.

@@veronica3662 Yes. Keep in mind, these birds evolved to be heard across miles of extremely dense forest. Multiple such birds all calling out at the same time in a very cramped room is going to cause damage to creatures who did not evolve for the same circumstances. Edit: I say this from having experienced it directly. My first job out of high school was at a local pet store that specialized in exotic birds. I very quickly noticed that I was getting vertigo and nausea within just a couple of hours; turned out to be inner ear damage from the birds. Friend of mine loaned me a pair of those special headphones they use at gun tournaments that block out everything above a certain decibel level, and that helped. Thankfully, that store has since moved to a much better location that isn’t nearly as cramped!

@anti-ethniccleansing465
@anti-ethniccleansing465 8 ай бұрын
That’s why I think parrot owners should always add something to their videos to discourage others, even if it’s a write-up in their description, saying that birds/parrots should not ever be bought, only adopted, and explain a bit about just how intense of a lifetime commitment they are. Explain other things too, like how noisy they are, and how most of them get rehomed X amount of times within their lives because most people don’t keep the commitment to them. And that they are like needy toddlers for life, etc etc.. That they require a lifestyle where someone is home all the time, and so on. The breeding trade needs to stop. Too many birds have been abandoned when they become “inconvenient” to the owners. It’s an epidemic. And it’s not fair at all to these highly intelligent, social winged animals to be kept in captivity indoors, in/on cages their whole lives. They deserve to be outside in the sunshine with their own flock, free to fly whenever they wish and have their own families. Birds shouldn’t be kept as pets; it’s very selfish of us to do so, because it’s not in their best interests. Therefore buying birds should be made illegal, and only adoption allowed until they’re all adopted and phased out as being allowed as pets. That’s the movement that should be encouraged. They are not domesticated animals. They are exotic wild animals, no matter how much they become accustomed to living in a human’s environment, with a human “mate.” It breaks my heart to see this gorgeous African Grey parrot locked in a cage, and it should break everyone else’s heart too. I know that he/she is not kept in there 24/7, but I also know that it’s simply not fair to the birds themselves to be kept inside closed cages. : /

As someone with permanent tinnitus likely linked to sun conure screaming, the pain is real. It must be hard to be an animal designed to call to its friends across a jungle when you live in a small house. At least the mimicking species have alternate contact calls...certain times of day require a steady back-and-forth of "Hi, bud!" with my blue-and-gold. The conure (named Apollo) died last year, but all he had was the screaming. The macaw screams a lot less without his little yellow rage-inducer.

@@RifterDaskNot any other parrot species. There's a great veterinary paper about contextual language even in budgies. Like whales, these guys have language. It's not thumbs holding them back, either. They can use tools just fine. They just don't really have the drive to build highways and civilization. There's a study about the gorillas who use sign language, where not a single one has ever asked an inquisitory question. That doesn't mean they're not curious--they just don't have a concept of intentionally seeking answers from someone outside themselves and their own exploration. Seems to be the same with all of the hyper intelligent language using species. Dolphins probably could've figured out some undersea empire using their very agile mouths if they cared. There's an ancient text that says "you were the one who taught us beyond the animals;" as in, it's not intelligence or a soul that's the difference, but that someone from outside came and taught us (in this case Job is referring to God), like we come and teach birds and whales. Someone else gave us the creator and searcher and questioner bug that doesn't just accept things as they are, both our curse and our strength. So we treat animals kindly, because there we would be, too, without someone choosing to treat us this way. It seems to fit the science available to me, as well as my experiences training birds and seeing when that sentient light turns on in their eyes, so I believe it.

In my experience animals don't stop doing things if you don't give any reaction. Any reaction can make them keep doing it and be taken as positive reinforcement and the absence of action can be as well. Think about it: getting PEOPLE to change their behaviour is almost impossible, how much more so with beings that have only a rudimentary grasp of intention and logic and causality? This is the major reason I no longer have a pet of any sort.

@@nullifye7816 Probably because they have a lower grasp, it is easier to get them to change. Have ever trained a dog ? It's much easier than training a human. If his intent was to make you react, and you react, then he's not going to stop.

@@flavorlessquark8614 Apollo's intent may _not_ have been to get a reaction tho. He may just be making the noise because it's a fun noise, in which case it needs to be made clear that he can't do that.
@ApolloandFrens

That’s how we handle every other annoying noise, but this one is physically painful unless you’re in another room; negative reinforcement in the form of timeout until he goes long enough without doing it is the only option. He’s smart enough to understand he gets timeout for doing it, if we ignore it he spams it repeatedly and it’s very difficult not to react when he does it randomly giving you sharp ear pain and momentary tinnitus.

I don't know if this works with Greys, but with smaller birds, if you want to stop them from making a loud noise, you need to turn your back on them and ignore them. Don't speak, don't engage, nothing. Birds are incredibly social beings, and if they do something that causes you to suddenly go quiet, they'll learn that they need to stop making that noise. So in this instance, with Apollo making the 'bad noise', the owner keeps calling out "Apollo!" Fairly loudly. If you respond to loud with loud, it encourages them. "Yay! They're talking to me! I need to make this noise more!" I used to own a Quaker Parrot, and we used to respond to her loudly in an effort to get her to be quiet. It got to the point that she was so loud, I could hear her screeching from our neighbor's house. We only learned long after she was gone that responding to loud with loud only encourages the behavior, rather than condemning it.

Most speakers do not do it justice, they physically cannot replicate the sound. And the few that can require the sound be picked up with good clarity by things meant for things in that range as most microphones are meant for recording things in our "normal" hearing range. Those screams are a natural sonic weapon and are surprisingly effective on anything with dynamic hearing like predators or humans. You really don't want to, I am speaking from experience. It will feel like a flashback went off in the room without the blindness, and if the bird was close to you it will hurt for hours. Some people experience nausea and vertigo and intense tinnitus as well as the pain. I love caring for parrots, but my ears need time to recover so they don't stay very long sadly when I foster or birdsit.
