Created in 2020 - 22 May.
Here's making of timelapse videos of my Aerith Gainsborough fan art sculpture. In this process I focused myself on the art of sculpting. I hope you guys can learn something trough this videos. I would say that this is definitely not one and only workflow for sculpting characters, but it's effective for learning volume, forms and details.
The video is consist of many different sculpting session put together into one. Any skipped or unrecorded footage is due to technical error.
Any reference images seen in the video I do not own them. All founded in Google and it's all for references and educational purposes only.
Part 1: Contains rough head and body sculpting etc.
Link: • Part 1/5 Aerith Sculpt...
Part 2: Contains readjusting the head and body, basic curve hair, rough dress and jacket sculpting etc.
Link: • Part 2/5 Aerith Sculpt...
Part 3: Contains refining and detailing the dress and jacket etc.
Link: • Part 3/5 Aerith Sculpt...
Part 4: Contains reffining and detailing the dress and jacket, creating the hair tie, hair readjustment, head readjustment etc, basic posing etc.
Link: • Part 4/5 Aerith Sculpt...
Part 5: Final part, contains creating the full hair, detailing in general, finalizing the sculpture etc.

Interesting, I'd never thought to use planes and boxes to measure out the proportions - a bit like drawing guides in 3d! Not to mention going through and drawing in the muscle groups to define the structure better - it just shows anatomy knowledge is crucial. Awesome work as always!

Really cool, thank you for showing your workflow! I was wondering, how do you set the camera view? Do you change the focal length? I have some issues when I switch orthographic/perspective view, when I change to perspective view the camera is too close from the character. I see you don't have this problem when you change from orthographic to perspective.
@Yudit1999
@Yudit1999 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I appreciate you stopping by man. Hope you can make it to part 5 of this series. Actually.. I barely use perspective. I'm mostly on orthographic when sculpting. I occasionally go to perspective mode or camera view to check the model. But I don't really sculpt in perspective.

hi, if you want to build animation from 3D, it's better to use low-poly or high-poly? Thank you! Love your work, they're the best!
@Yudit1999

Low poly is generally for games because they have to render it in real time. But for movies they generally use as high quality as possible. But it doesn't close the possibility to cross each other.

It's safe to say "talent" always means someone has been doing what they're doing for a very long time. While it's true that some people will learn certain things faster, there's no such thing as "being born with it", rather, some people have been doing things since they were born.

How did you do this at 7:40? Connecting separate objects into one like that. Like the neck connecting to the head or the ears connecting to the head making those seamless connections. It's hard for me to explain lol.
@jonny11995
@jonny11995 3 жыл бұрын
How it looks they've done the ear is they've placed the object where needed and deleted all vertices that would appear inside and at the connection point, leaving the shape to be attached. With this shape still being a separate object, enter the head object and delete vertices in the side of the head for the ear to fit, Join the two objects and create faces bridging the gap, you can even use the edge select bridge function on some occasions (results may vary :P). It's easier to do if there's the same amount of vertices for the opening of each object, for example, an arm and a wrist you can have the wrist be a circle of sixteen vertices attach to an arm of the same amount so the faces and vertex lines match up. In this case, it's a bit more finicky but that's why the smooth tool is your friend along with ctrl Z. A tip if you don't already know, turn up blenders undo "memory slots" (can't remember the actual name) allowing for more undo states, its preset memory is set to low so you can only undo about 34 times, with sculpting this is nowhere near enough as you will make mistakes. Plus always apply scale and location, I've forgotten to on multiple occasions and had arms and legs fly all over the place after using certain functions.
@Yudit1999
@Yudit1999 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually a very primitive way to do it. Since there's a lot of faster way to do it like boolean or remeshing. Basically I just merging both mesh, delete unnecessary verts, creating faces between those connections, and then regenerate the polygons with dyntopo. It's longer but more reliable and has less error.

Hello! I know that your inquiries were directed to the artist above, but I hope that I can also be of help, if you are open to it. There is a wide bounty of very professionally delivered and very much free instructional videos on how to learn and use the tools within a given 3D software, which is the biggest learning curve getting into the modelling part of it. Depending on what you're looking to do, whether it be 3D or another medium of character art in general, if I could pick one book, I would recommend "George Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life, 5th edition". It shows how simple lines place a given figure. They give it its general proportions, indicating its active and inactive sides, its balance, unity, and rhythm. How one thing corresponds to another on a character's body and the finer details that come out of it. The most important thing that will help you make your style, your own canonical proportions, your own is by practicing. Observing what you are drawing from life is crucial in order to understand how a given character's body takes shape. Perspective, light and shadow, colour theory... these are all things that you can flesh out once you have established a foundation in the simple structures that give a character...well, character. A really excellent, free series of videos I would recommend for learning proportions and how to draw parts of the body is the art channel, Proko. If you are looking to get into 3D modelling, using software like the one used in this video, Blender (which is free and open source!), check out Blender Guru 's channel. Specifically, his tutorial video series on making a donut in Blender 2.8 --- it shows one where a great deal of everything in the software is and what it can be used for. If I could give only one piece of advice for learning anatomy, it would be to start with simple shapes and gesture, and to only apply finer details after. I hope at least some of that is helpful for you!

@PokemonButcher 3 жыл бұрын
@@someoneyouknow9447 Grand! I'm glad that you found some of that helpful. That's understandable. Many of the tutorials for learning the software tools don't necessarily focus specifically on character models. Fortunately, once one learns how to use the tools, there are a lot of instructional videos out there on how to sculpt specific parts of the body. For 3D anatomy reference, I have gotten a lot of use out of the books, "Anatomy for 3D Artists: The Essential Guide for CG Professionals", "Anatomy for Sculptors: Understanding the Human Figure", and its companion book, "Anatomy of Facial Expressions". Another essential component of character design is, of course, clothing/costumes, and accessories. Conceptualizing the way the cloth or rigid materials are to be drawn and shaded is one thing, and 3D modelling them is another. There are certain programs in Blender that can simulate cloth behaviour in relation to a character model's body. But, one could also construct the character model with the clothing being a part of the model, to begin with. Unfortunately, I haven't found any worthwhile books on 3D clothing modelling, but that does not mean that one can not apply the lessons from 2D clothing art into 3D models and meshes. If you are aiming to blend aspects of 2D and 3D character art, as you mentioned, Blender has a number of tools that allow you to convert 2D into 3D and vice versa. PS> Having too many books that one doesn't make use of regularly takes up space and costs an unnecessary amount of money. If you can find the books online for free somewhere, it becomes much more sustainable and manageable. However, I would still recommend the physical copy of Bridgman's book --- mine is plastered in sticky notes 😅. Additionally, Here is a video on the overview of how characters are modelled: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJ6EnKSbu5jKaH0.html

I've been doing character in 3D probably for about 4 years now. I learn anatomy trough YT channel like Proko and online course, one for example is from Rafael Grassetti. About books I would probably recommend Uldis Zarins anatomy for sculptors that's a really helpful book. character design is not really my strong suit. My job is modelling characters in 3D from an existed concept arts. Concept artist would be the best to ask about character design.
