PART 1: How To Build A Chicken Tractor with PVC Pipe for Meat Bird Chickens, Joel Salatin Style

This chicken tractor is made of PVC pipe and we are building it Joel Salatin style. We were very pleased with how it turned out so far. Materials for the Chicken Tractor:
(10) 10 foot pieces of 3 inch PVC pipe
(14) 3 inch Tees
(8) 3 inch 90 degree elbows
(1) Can of purple pvc pipe primer
(1) Can of pvp pipe glue
(1) Roll of chicken wire 24 inches by 50 feet long
(100) 1 inch self threading screws approximately
(100) 1/4 inch fender washers approximately
(3) 14 foot pieces of 24 inch roofing tin
(2) 8 foot pieces of 24 inch roofing tin
(2) 6 inch by 1/2 inch eye bolts
(1) 15 foot dog cable
(25) 1 inch metal roof screws approximately
(4) 1/2 inch washers for eye bolts

Man I really want to build one of these PVC tractors. You did a great job! To bad a 10ft stick of 3 inch PVC cost $30 a 2x4x10 cost about $11. And with wood you don’t need any PVC fittings which cost quite a bit more than screws or nails.

My question is that if you are not intending to run a liquid or pressurizing the pipe why would you use a primer. I think simply glue is sufficient.

Thanks! Yes, that was my thoughts. Also heavy enough to make it hard for a predator to get under and it has a wider ground contact to help with that also. Won't stop predators but I feel like it will make it more difficult on them. The smooth PVC should slide across the ground pretty easy for us too.

He is right, purple primer is code. If you just use glue they will fail you every time. How did you pressure test it though? I didn't see the fitting. 😁

I haven't gotten that far in the video yet so not sure yet if this is covered. Using this system what do you do to protect the chickens from predators? Do you have an electric fence, guard dog, etc? I am thinking about this type of tractor however I do have predators that I need to prevent the from killing my chickens.

Rocky Hollow Homestead if I made this taller and longer and wider do you think I could use this as a goat and sheep tractor? Like would it be strong enough?

This is awesome. I was going to build some pvc cages to protect my beds from deer and the prices of the elbows and connectors kept me from doing it. Where do you buy your supplies?

That sounds like a great idea! As for now I just buy them at Lowes. We are very limited in our area for "hardware store" items and building supply places. I will be uploading a materials list soon and part 2 of the build. Thanks so much for watching!

@@rockyhollowhomestead5827 Haha sorry grandkids my whole post was deleted 🙄 I love your ideas. We will do similar but use dog house on 4 non removable wheels with bumpers and fine mesh for no escaping. We will just pull from the house end. We can get Great Dane size cedar dog houses for $25 so why not? Big enough for a back door, will be in A frame like dog house for the egg layers and yours exactly for the friers. We are 5 families so every 8 weeks we will get more. Really truly thanks for all the good tips, Respect from Peru
