The breaks stop the spool from spinning AT THE END of the cast. The spool tensioner is what you adjust to the weight of the lure.

You're correct, spool tension knob is set for lure weight. Secondary brakes on the side are for specific conditions, such as throwing into a head wind. You can also back it off once you're more advanced for more distance.

@@Totaro17 people have their preferences but the spinning reel can get anywhere a bait caster can. The real advantage of a spinning reel is line capacity. The real advantage to a baitcaster is you can operate basically everything other than reeling with one hand and the whole cast, cast again, cast again may be a bit faster to preform. I still prefer spinning reels but everyone is different.

The best to learn how to cast a baitcaster is to have a friend that can use one, throw a long cast and then pull out a couple more yards of line out, then put a small piece of duct tape on the spool and reel it back in, then start trying to cast it. The piece of tape won't let the line bird neat past that point in the spool. So if you do bird nest, it will be easy to untangle it.

When you are good at using a bait caster you can then have the tension at nearly 0 just make sure the reel is not moving side to side, you then control the line that is traveling faster than the reel with your thumb slowing it down, that makes for the longest cast you can do.

Line only comes out too fast if you let it, as your line is going out lightly tap the line on your spool and if you do it correctly you should be able to loosen your breaks all the way. However, you should adjust your tension to the weight of your lure. With some reels it doesn’t matter as much but with most, if it’s not dialed you either will backlash every cast or you won’t get any range on your cast.

Just got a bait caster for the first time bc I joined my school’s bass team and I was NOT expecting it to be as complicated as it is. The one I got has a centripetal brake and a magnetic brake and it was a chore just to learn the difference in those. You got tension and braking mixed up. The small tension knob on the left controls the tension the spool initially has to overcome to cast. The brakes slow your spool at the end of a cast so it doesn’t backlash. Both need to be tuned in so you don’t backlash

Best way to learn a baitcaster is set the drag to where your bait or lure falls down at like 1-2 feet per second. You will birds nest or backlash 90% less. Then once you get the hang of casting, and you have the motions down, you release the drag more so you can cast further. Start slow!!!

As someone who almost exclusively uses bait casters or BFS gear, once you get comfortable with your set up, try not to mess with your settings including the brake. Use your thumb and muscles in your arm and wrist to controll how hard/ far you cast regardless of lure weight.

great vid, one thing you might have forgot to touch on is spool tension vs brakes. spool tension is determined by weight, tighten until when you open the bail the lure barely touches the water. Brakes determine how fast your spool can spin. Regardless great video, this isn’t me trying to hate or anything btw, just help inform.

there is also one more knob that you forgot to mention though im not sure if its on every one but its on mine.. its similar to the brake but its for the end when the lure hits the water. so if you dont want to learn to use it with 0 brakes and worry about backlash period. the other knob lets you control if the line will even come out if you push the button to let it come out. you can adjust that so when the lure hits the ground or water it wont cause a backlash if your thumb isnt on the spool. so with the brake and knob combo you can make it so it never backlashes though this reduce casting distance. since both brake and knob adds friction that can be applied with your thumb on the spool right after casting. though people still should get used to doing it with least brake and apply small thumb pressure on the spool right after the cast then they can get the farthest cast possible with any lure. but ya if mess up then get backlash.

uhm sorry. the tension know is foe changing lure weights, the breaks don't need to be changed when u change lures. the breaks are purely to control spool speed and casting distance. the tension knob controls how much force need to be put on the spool to get it moving, that's why you adjust the tension know so that the lure can drop on an open bail and not cause a back lash, if u get a small backlash just from letting your lure drop to the ground, u will get a massive backlash when you cast. so once you adjust the tension so that your lure drops slowly, then set your breaks to around 80%. then once u get comfortable casting at 80%, turn the breaks down to 70% and so on till u get the desired casting distance. sorry for correcting you. just wanted to add this. nice vid.

P-S learn to know your reel if you do adjustments will become much much simpler

Fished with pretty much every type of reel, bait-casters are last choice. The control is fantastic and you can do a lot more with them and cast further- but there’s way too much to go wrong on them. Every single time I go out with my caster SOMETHING goes wrong with it.

Supposedly a right-hander shouldn't use a left-hand crank on a baitcaster. But if you're comfy fishing with a spinning reel, use a baitcaster with a crank on the same side (i.e. I use a lefty baitcaster reel even though I'm right handed). GAME CHANGER.
