Left traction control on, for climbing hills without any momentum you need to shut it off. Driver issue all the way. I live on a private mount rd. Traction control is useless on snow covered hills, only good to keep you from loosing control at speed. If you shut it off it automatically comes back on at 30mph.

Disable traction control firstly and please let me know anyone but if there's a center, front, rear lock, I'd try that too. Then worst case, I'd back up to the paved road to get some momentum - IDK to me it seems like it's more so, if not completely the driver's incompetence driving a vehicle, regardless of amount of grip available LoL 🤣🤣🤣🤣

These cars are definitely capable enough but the optional big 21in wheels hurt in the snow. I have an older discovery 3 and used to have an L405 range Rover and in the snow the discovery was much better because it has 18 in AT tires. Driver needs some momentum and maybe the traction control isn't set right. If the car has snow tires they aren't working right, usually you can get a little bit of traction even on ice.

It's always hard to capture the degree of slope in a video but that street does look pretty steep. The snow also looks pretty mild and slushy. I don't care what winter tires or vehicle you have that hill does look tough. True what other comments are saying about potentially deactivating traction control but I'd guess it still wouldn't work. I'd be looking for a way around.

TRACTION When driving in snow and ice, use steady momentum to carry you through. If the wheels start to spin or slide, ease off the accelerator until you feel the tyres regain grip. It’s important to keep the wheels rolling. All new Land Rovers are available with Traction Control, which diverts drive power to those wheels with the most traction. Hill Descent Control* takes the guesswork out of steep, slippery slopes by automatically braking to maintain a steady speed. Terrain Response technology* makes your Land Rover one of the safest SUVs in the world. When driving in snow or ice, select the Grass/Gravel/Snow setting and use the highest gear possible for the conditions. All-Terrain Progress Control* acts as a launch control system on slippery surfaces, ensuring composed progress at an exact speed set by the driver.

@@raystanton238 well tire tread needs to be spinning in order to claw through snow, so the more you spin the more snow you pull through. If going slow till you get traction was true, the traction control system would have worked because if it detects wheel spin it slowly pulls power until the wheel stops spinning, even to the point that it will cut power entirely on some systems.

The wheels appear to be 20” or bigger diameter. That means there aren’t much options in terms of winter tires. The ones on the car are Michelin Pilot Alpine winter and they are terrible in the snow. They behave more like all season tires than a real snow tires. You need something like michelin x-ice snow tires to tackle slush and snow. But the Michelin x-ice snow tires don’t come in large diameter wheel sizes.

From the 5 or so people who recognized it, I agree, the driver has one option left to try, which is turning off traction control. Correct, you can see the car repeatedly cuts power to all 4 wheels, which all traction control systems do when they detect all 4 wheels are slipping. You also can see the car laterally sliding. In this particular vehicle the button on the dash is labeled "DSC". But given there is no traction for over 30+ feet, if the driver is wanting to drive any distance, chains I consider a must. I don't consider the driver stupid or especially ignorant. Less than 10 percent of the commenters here realized traction control as the only possible option. And I'll guess that those 10 percent are idiots like me who had to have this happen to them before they learned. This is not a vehicle specialized for intensive off-road use, and the driver is probably not practiced at dealing with these conditions and is likely used to the car not getting stuck, which speaks to the quality of the car. They could also attempt letting some air out of the tires. The Michelin Alpin tires tested very well in snow. No they are not all terrain rated, but it looks like the car is on snow covered ice, which the lugs on all terrain tires won't help with. The 2 reasons why snow tires work is because the rubber stays flexible at low temperatures and because they are designed to collect snow in the tread because snow sticks to snow better than rubber. To the person who asked about locking the differentials..yes, good question, I absolutely would lock all differentials (and in any low traction scenario), which I think this model has an equipment option for a rear diff lock, especially when you turn off traction control since the brakes will no longer be applied to stop wheel spin. ... And yes, since it was commented on, vehicles with larger diameter wheels and wider cross sections have an advantage because they can "roll over" higher snow bumps/holes with less resistance and have more surface area to grip the snow, respectively... but that's off topic since the question asked is about what you can do as the driver with what you got when you find yourself in this situation. ... I hope you'll all come rescue me out there when you find me stuck doing something stupid, and won't hesitate to ask me for help when you get stuck in the freezing cold. Happy holidays.
@thedriver8174
@thedriver8174 2 жыл бұрын
Joshua I agree with almost everything you said. There are 2 things that I see differently, wider tires are not an advantage in snow as narrower tires will cut through snow more easily as to create less resistance. Second Michelin Alpines are good on ice but personally I have found them to be less effective in snow then some other brands but as you said they are considered to be a good snow tire. I agree with you that the solution is to turn off the traction control, lock all differentials, getting a better running start at the hill and finally move to the right of the hill in the fresh snow. Fresh snow gives better traction with less chance of ice underneath. When you spin your tires the friction creates heat that melts the snow and creates ice or at least a much slipperier surface and repetitive driving in the same tracks will only make things worst. Moving over into the fresh snow will always give you better traction. The same thing can be applied when approaching a stop sign. If people have driven in the same tracks and created an icy surface you will slip on the ice for sure and slide into the intersection. But if you move over into the fresh snow you will have better traction accompanied by the resistance from the snow helping you stop. Have a safe winter. Happy holidays!

@@thedriver8174 Great input you added. It made me think further. Regarding the thin vs wide tire: thanks for this, I thought that was an interesting point so I researched a little further. What I found was the consensus is, as you stated, that generally speaking the thinner tire is better traction in snow because as you said it cuts through snow and the surface pressure on ice is thought to give better traction on ice. I question the physics of the latter (I'm pretty sure I had a test question in physics class on that very issue). Would love to see a real world experiment testing the surface pressure theory. All this, however, appears to rely on the situation that you're driving in snow where there is an eventual hard bottom, which over 90 percent of driving will be, especially on paved and maintained roads. However, it appears that the dynamics change in very deep snow where your tires won't hit bottom (also for bottomless mud). In that case, the advantage of "cutting through" appears to work against you since tires will cut deeper and deeper and find no surface. The wider tire can give the ability to "float" over the snow, or mud. I think mountain bikers might intimately understand this best since they know what it feels like pedaling out of a muddy/sandy/snowy creek bed in the older skinnier tires that bury themselves and stop your bike vs newer wider tires used now. And apparently in hard pack snow (not ice), the wider tire shows somewhat better traction, but then that's not a "getting stuck/acceleration" problem, that's a braking/cornering problem. So what I've learned because of your input on this point is if someone asks what's better in snow, skinny or wide, I can say 90% of the time you want skinnier, but if you're doing unmaintained roads, wide will sometimes be better if you could be facing 1 or more feet of unpacked snow where you drive. ... Regarding the Alpin's: yup, I'm with you, and probably Michelin is too. That tire is designed for "performance class" it seems, so you can keep the sporty cornering (and look) for the non snowy days, but I'm sure the sacrifice in tread void causes it to be what you've experienced that is doesn't perform as well in snow as "non performance" purposed snow tires. ... Regarding driving in fresh snow: yes, agree, mostly. So yes, cars repeatedly spinning wheels can make that path worse, by either, as you said, polishing the surface into smooth ice, or turning deeper softer stuff into a deep slushy muddy mess, so that's what I look for in the tracks 1) is there shiny smooth stuff, 2) is there slushy muddy stuff...if so, I go in the fresh snow. But if the tracks look like good compacted snow (not ice), then I'll use the tracks because it tells me a known good path, and if I'm in a low clearance car, it can keep me from getting high centered. And one big caution I consider if I want to use a fresh snow line, especially if I'm off road, if that fresh snow is at the edge of the road, think first because the road could drop off and be hidden and all of a sudden the side of your vehicle sinks. If that happens, and it does often, now we're all probably super stuck. .....damn, no wonder we all get stuck and banged up in snow, it's a lot. (realized my 2 comments have been very wordy because I've been thinking how to prepare my daughter who will be driving age by summer)
@thedriver8174
@thedriver8174 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuawhite5875 Wow you really have given this a lot of thought. I whole heartedly agree with your analysis. My response was geared directly to the video and the conditions of that particular road under those conditions. I am happy that you took the time to mention other factors that can vary depending on conditions and roads that you would be on such as out in the country where there are no sidewalks. Or diving in a storm when the snow is so thick that you can no longer determine where the road ends and as you pointed out, we would easily get stuck or even slip into the edge of a ditch and high center the vehicle. If both wheels on the same side of the vehicle have no traction you are not getting out without some help! Your description of the fat tires versus skinny is right on the money. When you gave the example of the fat bike tires I was reminded of the "Top Gear Polar Special" that demonstrates precisely why fatter tires work well over deep snow. But in everyday driving on groomed if not paved roads the skinnier tire works better. But I have to confess that as a Canadian driving in very snowy conditions for over 40 years I have always used dedicated snow tires that were narrower then the summer tires until a few years ago. Since I bought my WRX I bought snow tires that are the same size as the summer tires. I did so because I drive mainly on paved roads in the city and found that 80% of the time I am driving on asphalt where the wider tire gives my better stability and better handling. Though I have noticed that I feel greater resistance driving through thick snow. I think you are right about the Michelin tires, that they are popular because they maintain the sporty feeling of the car and they are less noisy on pavement than a more aggressive snow tire. And I have to admit that they are a very good ice tire. So for people who spend more than 70% of there winter driving on pavement the Michelins are great. I enjoy the positive exchange of ideas and experience! Cheers!

1st mistake - The weight of the snow on the roof is a big no no. 2nd mistake - driving where tire mark already are is a mistake because as vehicles pass and turn the snow to water, that same water turns to ice in a matter of minutes or seconds, depending on the temperature. 3rd mistake - always create and maintain the same momentum, preferably where the engine has the most torque available.

Haaa forget about the BMW and mercedes powered cars as the rear wheels are the main, or try the front and then all 4 if you can't with FWD only. Too bad you can't see too many expensive RWD cars in winter in my country: IT'S FOR A REASON! They are the ones who give the body repair services a lot of job and full pockets :D

They would have made it the first time had they put the vehicle in the right traction setting and steered the vehicle. In their haste to not hit the other vehicle they slam on the brakes and then try to continue with TC on. I mean you can hear it cut the power to all the wheels 🤭. The BCM was like ERROR.... ERROR....404 NOT FOUND. 😂
