Part 1 Repairing a Sony Walkman WM AF57 Mega Bass Radio Cassette player

Picked up this Sony Walkman tape and radio player at a fleamarket for free and I thought I'd have a go at trying to see if it was fixable! It's my first go at repairing such a device and I learnt a lot. I hope it helps someone out there! ! Part 1 is an introduction, a look inside and a quick test! Parts 2 and 3 to follow. And yes...I do keep saying "band" instead of "belt"!! Don't bin it...fix it!!

I found this video very helpful. After I replaced the belt my Walkman made the most hideous squeaking noise; I fixed the squeaking by lubricating the gears with synthetic lubricant applied with a cotton bud.

Thanks Bren, did you see Robert Lozano's comment below. Please check the correct routing of the belt ok. I have since changed mine.

The belt its bad position, see you the video sony wm-f2085 cassette walkman repair, is same the mechanism. Good luck....

Thank you, found your tutorial very helpful. Just wondering if my Walkman will need a new belt having not used it for about 10 years.

Thank you for watching and I hope it was useful. Please read a further comment on here as someone advises me that the belt is not quite correctly fitted! I think after 10 years, there's a real chance the rubber would've started to degrade. I would definitely source a replacement via ebay/Amazon.

Great. But the screws are very tight. I can't open it. Any advice please?

Hmmm, not sure which particular screws you mean? Mine were not so tight, I can only say make sure you have the right size screwdrivers and go carefully. Please note the other comments regarding the routing of the belt too! Good luck and thanks for watching!

Open the lid, use a torch and look carefully inside. You should spot the tabs that the base plate clips into. Gently pry the tabs with a small screwdriver. It came off real easily but be gentle as it might be easy to snap the plastic tabs. Ps..read the comments regarding the routing of the belt!!
