Having already experienced steam on the Tuzla coal railways the previous day with a return trip to Bijela, we arrive at Tuzla station to join our train for more nostalgic steam action. Our train consists of one passenger carriage and six coal wagons hauled by a Class 33 steam locomotive for a memorable trip to Banovići coal mine, including narrow gauge steam haulage for the last leg. Part 1 includes driver’s eye views, passenger views and numerous run pasts, along with a variety of regular coal trains. For the first few miles we retrace the previous day’s route to the outskirts of Tuzla where the Bijela, Novo Brčko & Croatia line diverges from our route to Banovići.

Another good one Tim my friend. Sometime I forget you are there actually recording these trips. I guess you get used to the feeling, " middle of nowhere" when you get off the train. Hi, thank you for your kind comment. I was travelling on a tour arranged by the "Railway Touring Company", these trips around the former East European railways are fun, because the health and safety culture is still realistic, based on a common sense approach rather than a draconian rule book that would almost certainly forbid everything we do on these trips. I'm glad you enjoy watching these videos, my wife suffers from Vampire DNA and she says they put the best films on TV in the early hours of the morning.

Hi Neil, this isn't a repackage, it's all new stuff. The first few miles are along the same route as the previous day's run to Bijela, uploaded a few months ago, after that we are running along a different route. This will probably be four or five parts in total, most of it along narrow gauge lines to the pit heads. In Part 2 we arrive at the transfer station where coal is unloaded from the narrow gauge wagons into the standard gauge ones below. This is a narrow gauge railway like no other. Part 2 should be up in a day or so, as for the rest, that's going to depend how Christmas and visiting my family goes. Take care and have good festive break. Tim.

Hi Tim. Good shot! I remember my early childhood, when as little boy I loved going to railway station and watching maneuvers of the steam locomotives... It was at mid-fifties of last century. And at 1957 appeared first satellite of Earth... But steam locomotives now present only in museums or some places to carry tourists. So, the satellites have become commonplace and supply the Internet around the World. By the way, we expect new ultra-high-speed satellite system to global Internet access -- by Elon Musk project...

The world is an ever changing place, but on this railway system time stopped about 45 years ago, giving use this wonderful opportunity to see how it used to be done. I am an engineer, when I first started using machines, we had to use dials, vernier scales and worry about things like backlash, that all seems so long ago. Now I program computers to operate the machines from 3D drawings of mold tools I have designed on CAD programs. The things we take for granted today were unheard of when I was serving my apprenticeship over 40 years ago. I remember the first satellite TV broadcasts, man on the moon and even England winning the World Cup. So many changes, but I am not sure technology has given us a better lifestyle, it's just more complicated, or is that me showing my age?

Hello again, dear Tim! No, it's do not depend of your age, I think... /But I are old man.../ Rather, this opinion depends on the presence (or absence) of sound view of the World and Life... Of course, this 'progress' are 'dopping' to just 'materialistic' features of Life only. For example, many-many modern engines, like cars, are very beatiful -- so, it's don't bad as-is-as, -- and it 'faces' can be changed on according to new fashion trends... But this fact does not improve one's just of their basic, most important qualities, is not it? So, computing design are first factor for possibility of this variations in appearance. But very reasonable innovations for engineering quality are last position now, at this World!.. :(((

P.S. Information technology, not directly related to an industrial applications but aimed at communication between people -- as I mentioned yesterday with reference to the high-speed global Internet -- would seem originally be intended for most part of using precisely for purely humanitarian purposes and aspects. Therefore, in spite of my fair skepticism about this so-called 'progress' -- as kind of 'idol' and almost 'religion' of notorious 'New World' (tm) -- I still admit the Internet is good tools... but less and less, alas! Because every year in this sphere, there are more and more negative moments generated by the widely available digital global communications... And even here even for me: to old man who has devoted much effort to the development of this sphere for 30+ years now, -- are growing share of skepticism about 'progress' in general, and about the 'goodness' of this World in general. And it happens literally at last 3-4-5th years, -- so, and in this sphere my 'illusions' are melting with catastrophic speed!.. Nevertheless, there is clearly better has global internet public access, than global television one -- who based same satellites too. /More at 35th years I have been scornfully calling the TV... exclusively as 'zombie box'! (Hah-hah-hah!)/

You Tube has a big advantage over television in that it is interactive. Many of my viewers are virtual tourists, for one reason or another they cannot visit the places I go, so watching videos, following the route on Google Earth and looking up information on the internet is the next best thing. The internet has made the encyclopedia almost redundant today, if you want to know something, just type the question and Google comes up with an answer. Unfortunately the downside is criminal activity, such as online fraud. My mother has fallen victim to fraudsters, so she is very wary of the internet now. Parents are faced with the almost impossible task of policing what their children see on the internet. Satellites have bought many wonderful technological advances and some not so good. I have a choice of more than one hundred TV channels, most of them showing rubbish or repeats and a small number of worthwhile programs. My childhood was better than that enjoyed by children today. I played football after school or went fishing or sailing, I had do my homework using my own knowledge or books from a library. Girls were not pressured to grow up too quickly, they had time to play hop scotch or learn to sew and be creative, my sister made her own cloths to wear to dances. I don't like mobile phones, mine is turned off most of the time, yet at the same time I create and watch You Tube videos. I like You Tube, because anyone can use it and in spite of the criticism Google receives over uncontrolled content, it is policed and suitable for children. Progress is good for those who use it sensibly, but young people have come to rely on it too much, because they have never lived without it.

Of course, YT is best way to virtual 'life' -- it's good and bad moments and conditions -- and it's good and bad at the same time, alas!.. But Internet and YT (as a part on it) are really multi-cultural and many-vision point for many people. So, it's very good. Alas, many people, include me, has very long time to view several Internet content, -- it's do not best way to life... /Of course, for me this is part of my job as IT. But no one TV, -- just include 'global' channels like 'National Geographic' or many others, -- haven't best choose way to viewing and understanding the Global World.../ Yes, and my childhood was better -- I played on many games -- without any 'screens'! -- after school; or I going to a walking at nature, and don't in room with a popular 'gajets', -- as it's now doing many childrens... Hmm... 'Progress' and 'Intellect' theme... Alas, it's difficult with intelligence of people -- as I see it more and more -- there are considerable problems! And it don't only concerned an young people... This circumstance has many global causes that are difficult to consider. P.S. And I don't like mobile phone! And mine 'smart-phone' too turned off most of times!.. ^)))

We saw 6 or 7 coal trains and a passenger train during the day, the rails looked well used, it is not unusual to see vegetation encroaching on the permanent way in many European countries, especially the poorer ones.

Track looks in better condition that it does in some parts of Greece! I'm wondering, do they have an equivalent of the ten-year boiler ticket we have in the UK? I suppose they have regular inspections, but do they actually have boiler certificates and mandatory overhaul intervals?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrei, the track was in reasonable condition. We visited two loco works where steam engines were being maintained and overhauled. I don't know about the requirement for a ten year boiler certificate, there were not many steam leaks, although the engines were dirty, as one one might expect with real working locomotives, they looked to be in generally good condition.

Greetings from the UK to all. I'm afraid I'm only anything 'narrow gauge' - whatever fuel it uses. I forget how long ago steam disappeared from Britain's Mainline Railways. I used to have an Aunt who lived in Devon and every summer my Mother would take me on, - (I believe it was called "The Cornish Riviera Express"), - down for our summer holidays. We would leave London with 14+ carriages behind one of the big class ?? with a 'Top Link' driver (so I was told). All the way down it would keep "slipping" coaches until when ours was 'slipped' there was this massive engine left pulling only 2 or 3, it looked rather funny I remember - oh those were the days - pure heaven to a small child. Then a certain Doctor came along and we lost almost the lot - was it for the better I have often wondered. Only last year I took my nearly 50 year old daughter and family on the NYMR and for a moment I didn't realise they had not only never seen a 2-10-0 up close but none of them had ever experienced a trip behind one before, it was fascinating to hear their comments - and questions. I'm sorry if I have gone on for so long, when you get to my age it is nice to share them if only with just one of your readers. .... A Happy New Yew To You All.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, I enjoyed your recollections of holidays in Devon, at first I thought your description sounded like the Southern Region "Atlantic Coast Express". I looked up the "Cornish Riviera Express" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornish_Riviera_Express It would appear your recollections are accurate and it is likely you did travel on the "Cornish Riviera Express", that must have been a wonderful experience. The railways needed sorting out, but Beeching went too far, but I blame Ernest Marples, because he implemented the recommendations, then a Labour government swept to power promising to reverse the cuts, that didn't happen either. Beeching is left carrying the can, but the real villains were both Conservative and Labour governments for overseeing and implementing the cuts. It is wonderful to still be able to visit countries where time has stood still for the last 50 years. I am not sure all changes have been for the better, life in these former East European countries is far more relaxed, children play real games rather than staring at a mobile phone, with little or no appreciation of the beauty around them. I love to see the look on children's faces when they see a steam train, a mixture of fear, wonder and awe. I'm getting on a bit now and I am glad our children can still see and experience a large steam engine at work, even if it is usually on one the beautifully preserved heritage lines that exist in many parts of the world. Happy New Year.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank-you for a lovely reply. I agree totally with you about Beeching, politicians are quick enough to make all these promises in order to go on their "little power trip", but aren't so quick to implement them once they have safely got into parliament. At the same time they do not want to be seen as not carrying out their "promises" so they are very good at 'passing the can' back to whoever they 'nominated' to do the job originally - in this case Dr. Beeching. A similar situation occurred when they built the M1 motorway, the main contractors had to be rapidly "transferred" into Ernest Marples wife's name. As at the time he was in parliament and it would have looked as if he gave the contract to his own firm - something not allowed under the UK Parliamentary system. It must be lovely to visit these countries where as you say 'time has stood still', it must be like almost walking back into one's childhood, - I'm afraid the 'digital age' is not for me. I could go on for pages about the past being better in a lot of ways, but I had better not as it will only cause 'friction' with your younger viewers. Who I find in general seem to be unable to "comment" on any subject without swearing - a sign of our 'modern times' perhaps. With that a Happy New Year to you as well.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Christopher, unfortunately I think a minority of youngsters get all youngsters a bad name. I've never heard my own children swear. I can remember my teacher saying "empty vessels make the most noise", maybe that explains why we hear the ones that swear, the rest are just quietly getting on with life. I remember my father having something to say about my appearance, I had long hair, flared trousers and bright shirts, even I'm embarrassed when I see old photos of myself. Whilst I enjoy You Tube the rest of digital age has passed me by, probably because I never turn my mobile phone on.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes I see your point about children, although where I live, - (and it's certainly not what I would call a "rough" area), - I think I would say the average is about 50/50. Mind you my town is on the coast so of course during the 'season' and at weekends the number is swollen considerably, although some of the younger 'parents' are just as bad. Luckily for me and my late other half we did manage to install some manners in ours, although sometimes I wonder when they are out of my hearing range what they have to say. Not so much my daughter etc. but the grandchildren I find need to be reminded that words like Please and Thank-you exist in the English vocabulary and as my Mother used to say "cost nothing to use". As for one's appearance my era was almost that of the "Teddy Boy" and "Café Racer", although I was allowed to dress fairly similar it was more of a "Mod" style than a "Rocker" complete with Vespa scooter, and of course the obligatory 'flares' etc. If I say my mobile does not even have a camera it will give you some idea as to it's age, several times my daughter has wanted get me a more modern model. However I say to her as long as it works and I can send and receive calls and texts I see no reason to get a new one. As for You Tube, my eyesight is not quite what it was when I was young, so a couple of years ago I bought a 32" television and got my son-in-law to link it to my computer - result I can see everything I want to much clearer without having to put up with all the 'rubbish' the TV programmes force on us.

There are still 5 working and driving examples of those DRB-52 Kriegslokomotive in Bosnia to deliver coal from the Kreka mine to the Tuzla Power Plant, the largest coal plant in the region. Running on the very product that they tow to the power plant means that they are cost effective (a big advantage in a poor country, no need to buy expensive diesel). These units have remained in service for over 80 years, 70 years longer than the initial projected life span, due to the skills and ingenuity of the local repair personnel.

I think the coal used was from one one the mines in the area, the locomotive coal looked OK, it was not the same as the coal being transported to the power station. In part 2 of this trip, I ride in the cab where you can see the coal being used, Part 2 should be available before Christmas.
