I am really enjoying these videos. I have been doing a lot of the same things on a 1940 Ford, and it is really interesting to see how Chevrolet did things quite a bit differently. I am also enjoying watching how you approach the various tasks. Well done sir!

Yesterday was the first day my 48 Chevy hit the road in over 50 years. I’m going to need to do everything you did to this car because it was wondering all over the road! Everything is worn slap out!!! I’m thankful you posted these videos for a guide! Thanks again!

I was working on a 48 Chevy coupe when a big pine tree fell across the top ! Should have made a homemade convertible from it, I see that now 30 years later ! Still have the 46 coupe though !

Another great video. I have a 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe 4 door that has this very same problem. Cant find anyone in town that wants to take on this job, and after watching this video Im certain that I can do this job. NO PROBLEM! Thank you so very much for this video, and cant wait to see more repairs on this and other old cars. GOD BLESS! You blessed me with this video.

I am very thankful that you are making these videos for us! I’ll be starting on my 48 Chevy this fall, good Lord willing! Learning from you reminds me of learning from the old WWII era folks. They insisted that it had to be done 100% correct! Thank you again!

I enjoyed the video, reliving the work I did on my '47 Fleetmaster a few months back..... Unfortunately, mine didn't have the gearbox with the recirculating ball arrangement. Instead, it had a "fluted roller" sector gear (for lack of a better term) that engaged the flutes of the worm gear. I removed the gearbox to rebuild it - and believe you me, the front of the car has to be WAY off the ground before the steering wheel end of the shaft clears the steering column!!!! My gearbox had some water damage, and the lower of the tapered roller bearings supporting the worm shaft was bad. Luckily, I found one (NOS) - but the inner race doesn't come with it as one would expect. The inner race is machined onto the worm gear, and isn't replaceable. I cleaned it up, and also cleaned up some of the terrible pitting on the worm gear. The upper and lower cases move in relation to one another to eliminate the lost motion between the worm and the sector gear - but since I removed material from the worm gear to smooth it, I still have some slop in there with the cases moved to get the gears as close to one another as possible. Wah! I'd really like to have a gearbox with the recirculating balls, but I'd like to have another turn or two lock-to-lock, as that would reduce steering effort. I believe my steering wheel had the same lock-to-lock turns as yours.....

This is absolutely great. I have a 1946 Business Coupe that has play in the steering. You make this look really easy. Guess this might be a similar project for me this winter. Thank you !!

Just watched your video. I had done all of that this summer to my 1940 Chevy. When i got the king pins out the bushings came right out like yours but they would slide out the other way. The stops were worn down and way too much play in the spindle. (Lack of grease!) Lucky that I had two more sets of spindles and was able to get a good solid pair from my spares. For the steering box on the Chevrolet Forums in the VCCA club they say to use "Corn Head Grease" from John Deere. It come in a tube that fits in a grease gun. I had to completely rebuild my steering box. Once I got the top off it had regular chassis grease in it. The sector gear was pitted and the worm gear had chunks missing from it! (The guy I bought the car from was driving it that way!!!!) Believe it or not I had spares. Replaced the bearings and put it back together and was able to do all the adjustments with the box out of the car getting everything within spec from the manual. That adjustment you made was the hardest one to get just right and now the car has absolutely no play in the steering. Hope to have it on the road soon. Love your videos. They are a great help. Take care and stay well.

Sounds great! Love the '40, one of my favorite year models. Grease is certainly an option, and maybe header grease doesn't thicken up as bad in cold weather. Either way it's not much of a concern since classic cars aren't driven that much in freezing weather. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Great work on the videos! The OCD in me would want to clean off all the dirt and grime while I was down there :) On my 53 Chevy pickup, I'm having to deal with someone spraying on an undercoating which is proven very difficult to remove. Really enjoy your channel!!

..take the castle nut off the stub axle and the four nuts off the back of the backing plate - take the whole hub off, much easier to get at.. esp if doing the wheel bearings at the same time..

You can do an online search for new or rebuilt, it's going to run you between $400-$700. You can get rebuild kits for around $100.00, or you can send it to me (go to ratzlaffmotorco.com - "rebuild service") and it would probably cost about $300.00 plus the shipping.
