When you need a speacialty tool for the job, you know some specialty information is worth having too. I was just researching this, having an ecotech up in miles and seeing car wizards video recently, and must say, never have I ever seen such an in depth part replacement video, I mean you not only tell the head sizes, but also the bolt lengths and tips on how to get them out so they don't fall. Thanks so much for such a quality video here, earned a sub. I am thinking I might need to go into the timing cover soon, as I am getting knock when I start the engine, worried it might be the tensioner, but not sure. Also liking the ending footage. Ok now for part 2

When it come to auto motive I am always reluctant referring to video. So often you are forced to siphon through useless information. Sir, I am impressed. You seem to know exactly what to say and how to say it, with minimal fluff. Which you seem to handle well with quickly getting back to task in hand. Thank you for your contribution in helping us fix our cars. This is the first time falling upon your video. I will return for part two.

I have nothing but respect for todays technicians who have to work on todays cars! The jobs on the 60’s that we thought were a bear were nothing. Dealers are now charging 200.00/ hr. A leaking water pump could very well total a car today especially on a high mile car with other needs!

Great video. It really helped me be prepared for this difficult repair. I was working on a 2013 equinox awd. Had a lot of trouble with the bottom converter bracket. It took a 15mm crows foot, 24 inch extension, and a lot of patience.
@tritech
@tritech 11 ай бұрын
Just got that same bracket off after fighting with it for days. Started with a 12 point socket and rounded off the 13mm. Then tried a 6 point on an impact and rounded it off. Tried rounded socket extractors in 13 and rounded it more. Tried filing flats on it to get it to 12mm and gave up and started to use an osciscillating tool to cut the head off. Blade dulled and before running out to get another I tried pounding on a 12mm extractor socket and it finally came loose. No idea why that bracket bolt was so tight, everything else, even the rusty cat bolts came out fine.

An engineering design where you have to remove engine mounts and capture the timing to replace a water pump? No, just no. Excellent video but I'm sure GM doesn't want the consumer to know about this. Thanks for warning us about this headache.

Once you know how to do these, they're no big deal. Same goes for the starter under the intake manifold on a Toyota 4.7L. It's a straight up shock at first blush though.

Lots of cars have the water pump driven off the timing chain or belt, and require you remove the belt to get to it. At least this one we can do it without all that headache. Plus they last a damn long time anyway.

I had a jumped timing chain on my 2.2 L61 Z22YH in my 2007 Holden/Opel Astra a few years back, so I thought I might as well do the lot, both chains, guides, tensions, waterpump, thermostat, seals , oil pump impeller, as I did not want to do many small repairs in the future. The old water pump - which was fine - had a plastic impeller they have bad rep, the new one is metal. The car was about 12 years old at the time an the service history was lacking, so I made the assumption the guy I brought it from had not really taken care of it. I also replaced all cooling hoses, fuel lines and others. I used all OEM parts. So far so good.

Easier to assemble, all that the designers were told to care about. The poor grease monkeys maintaining it get paid by the hour at the stealership, so making it a long service works out well for the stealership. Only losers are the customers and the independent mechanics, and Got your Money does not care about them.

If you're really worried about bolts dropping in the timing cover you could always make the hole bigger on the water pump sprocket holder, slide a piece of pipe into it that goes right over the sprocket bolt, then insert the socket into the pipe. Bolt will slide right out the pipe and not into the engine.

Nice work on this one Brian. The only other water pump replacement & repair nightmare that's worse than this one can be found on the Ford V-6 they put in the Edge & other Ford products. There's no way to tell if the water pump is leaking in the Ford because the pump weeps the coolant directly into the crankcase. The transversely mounted engine configuration complicates damn near every repair. In some cases it's necessary to drop the entire engine out the bottom to gain access to the timing chain. Total crap!!
@doug960
@doug960 5 жыл бұрын
I HATE HATE HATE these crap boxes. I've never had a vehicle kick me in the nuts so many times despite absolute to-the-tee maintenance since purchased new. Our 2012 Malibu has needed in all its 70,000 mile life: a complete timing overhaul, an exhaust manifold, an exhaust flex joint, a rear brake caliper rebuild, an emergency brake pedal assembly, a front wheel bearing, two power mirror switches, two front door speakers, a trunk release button, and a rear defroster tab repair. If I wasn't doing all my own work, the repairs would have exceeded the value of the car twice over. GM corporate sucks. No help whatsoever, just a "sorry, go fork over a couple thousand to your local dealer."

You got that right. I have a 2012 equinox, with 78000 miles that already have to had the timing chain replaced, and the front seal. What is next? The water pump, witch a disaster to replace. It burns 4 quarts of oil between oil changes. Had to have the windshield wiper linkage repaired 3 times. because the linkage came apart. What where these engineers thinking when they engineered this engine? They had to have been drunk.

Generally they are there as brown powder, not seen any that went in, more were dropped on the road as chunks when that pump seized. changed Ford ones at the roadside, went out and seized 12km from town, drove in gently and stopped at the garage at 20 to 6. Went to the spares place right there, after going across the road to FORD, and they had one at the other branch. Arrived 5 past 6, and we compared the new "second source" to the one in there, and fitted it there and then at the garage. They asked where the car was, and we told them it was the red one by the pump. He said he never saw anybody get those water pumps out so fast. Experience, plus my friend is a qualified mechanic, and we have done a few water pumps, plus more engine overhauls, on that particular model engine, seeing as it was a package engine for machinery where we were.

The one thing you said I didn't want to happen, happened (eye-roll). I had someone doing the work following your instructions when he got ahead of himself despite my objection. I was trying to tell him he was skipping a step (By not using the magnet tool) when... Bam! It happened he dropped a bolt inside. I was livid, to say the least. Can you recommend a video or webpage that will instruct me on how to get that bolt out? PLZ & thaNx!

Best thing to do is pull the timing cover without moving the engine. This video has a good engine out explanation. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM6DltKSnJvVZ3U.html Best of luck!

3:00 in and I realise that I dont have ratcheting spanners and how much of a bastard that would be. Is there a degree of complacency that comes int he box with a set of ratcheting spanners?

I hate working on GM cars. It seams like they've put a whole car together thinking nothing will ever broke or wear out, you can't fit a hand anywhere nor to mention a hand with a tool ...

Duramax is the same way. Great engine, but Isuzu built it Play-doh style. Just keep slapping layers of parts on there overlapping as you go. Toyota does the same thing.

Thank you for this video, but toward the end when you said it’s a 10mm to remove the pump you were incorrect twice. They are 13mm on the front of the pump and there are 2 and then 2 on the back. Spent a good 30 mins trying to figure that out 🤦🏻‍♂️

Of course gm didn't really want to be able to aleart drivers that the pump had failed. Think how many more engines they will sell if they have catastrophic engine failure.l

They're more than obliged to giver 100k miles or 130k just fine, but come on back and see our service dept beyond that and see what we've been up to in new car sales would you please beyond that.

They design so 99% grenade after warranty expiration, so they hope by then the customer is still in debt paying off the car, and trades it in on another GM product, or needs a new car and has just done the final payment.

they would sell zero engines, the car would just be scrapped in most cases
