Hey Nathan! I have to hand it to you. You've done an amazing tutorial on the M62. I have a 2001 540i. I have to do this job on my car as I blew my guides a while back and had to sit the car as I wasn't going to pay 4k to a mechanic. I'm going to be knocking this job out in a few months but had to give you kudos on the best tutorial I've seen for the timing on the m62. Thank you! You've earned another sub.

Hey Nathan thanks very much for making that video I really appreciate it. I am a 14 year mechanic but was very unconfident having to do this on my vehicle. I kind of feel part 2 video had some very important things left out and in part 1 how to set the timing to top dead center and on video to how to install the cam locks and how to remove and replace the timing chain guides. other than that this video has given me confidence to do the job

Hi, Nathan I been watching most of your video`s about BMW`s, very informative and helpful to people like to DIY mechanic. I have a 2002 X5 E53 4.4 v8. Decided to DIY it. Happened, the vanos on the driver side has no continuity on it. This mean I can not do the timing. No force was applied to the vanos just a snug and blows air on it. Try to clean to recover continuity but no luck. Also my oil pump chain is loose. I tried to loosen the bolts but not enough space. Nathan Would please post a video on how to a just an oil pump chain on this model. Great video Thanks,

Thank you for taking the time to do the videos. Great job!! I know is not necessary but Im wondering if I should take the engine off to do the job so I can do more stuff to it. I think you mentioned you have a video on that. The famous "while Im there" is gonna get me I know it and I'll want to change valve seals and all. I may even take the heads out which I probably shouldn't with 85K miles on an '01 740 IL. Is just that Im taking the car back with me to Uruguay, S. America and parts are 3X more expensive and it takes 3X longer to get so Im trying to do all the preventative maintenance I can now. I honestly think that doing this job and not doing the VANOS seals is a travesty. Im sure you know that's an achilles tendon on these M62's. You probably have a video on that too. I would also do manifold and valley pan gaskets, the list is endless really. Also, does the chain for the P/S have an adjustment? I seem to recall a video somewhere where someone tightens it. Once again, KUDOS on your clear explanation of this procedure.

Hey Nathan. Thank you very much for the video. I'm doing an engine out rebuilt of my M62TU that includes new timing guides and a valley pan seal starting in June/July. This 3 vid series + your valley pan seal vid has some of the best info on the internet and I appreciate you posting it. I do have 2 questions if you have the time to answer them. #1 I don't think I've come across any other guide that mentions the possibility of the lifters seizing with timing guide debris. Is this really something you've seen a lot or perhaps this is sometime something that gets handled when the lifters eventually bleed down? #2 Also regarding the lifters. In your video, chronologically, you mention removing the cams to inspect the lifters with your locks in place. If that's correct, that would mean I would need to unbolt and lift out the cams, check and reinstall the lifters, then orient and slide the cams back down through the locks to bolt them back in place?

Hey i have a question. Im working on a 2001 740i. So i went to lock my cams on bank 1 (passenger side) but couldn’t get the intake cam’s lobe to properly seat within the cam lock opening. The exhaust cam lock sat flush and bank 2 (driver side) intake and exhaust cam locks sat flush also. The only issue im having is with the intake cam sitting flush with the lock on bank 1. At this stage of the job, i have the chain installed and have a zip tie securing the tension. Would a bent valve cause this problem? If not, what else could possibly be causing such resistance at that cam? Could it possibly be the tension on the chain? Please help

Great video, but seems like there are a lot of grey areas here to clarify in much more detail for such a complicating timing process. Just curious, is there a sequence BMW requires to loosen Cam caps and tightening re-installation for the Cam shaft to go down evenly? Usually I know it's good practice to start from outside in when loosening, and inside out when tightening.

At the very end of the timing procedure after you use the ohm meter and and get it to ring, then tighten the tone ring nuts to 30 ft lbs..... when you take off the cam blocks, does the vanos cam slightly turn on you? and if so are you still supposed to get a tone on the ohm meter after the blocks are off?

Thanks for putting together this great video! I'm checking my hydraulic lifters per your recommendation, pulled off the 5-8 intake cam and found none of the lifters actuate. I can spin the inside part that contacts the valve stem but I can't get it to push in or pull out. The engine ran fine before I took it apart (besides the timing chain noise, no valve ticking noise), is it possible that all of them went bad or am I doing something wrong? It's a 2002 e53, 153k miles. Thanks.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 4 жыл бұрын
VW uses the same style of lifters. They "should be" stiff / solid / "pumped-up" with oil. When the piston moves much / easily... the lifter is not pumped-up (lacking oil), that is what causes the ticking sound. Your lifters are fine. I'm not sure what his reasoning is / was in stating what he did.

Thanks for a great video! My question is: This seem so simple, so WHAT is the specific issue that makes most shops, or 90% of them not being able to do this procedure? I am about to try this DYI myself, and want to investigate every possible issue that i may encounter! THANKS SO MUCH! My biggest concern at this time seems to be getting the Crankshaft bolt out! Your input is so appreciated!
@curtmcd
@curtmcd 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, it doesn't seem like a big deal for a shop who does a lot of timing jobs. Maybe it's a common occurrence that once they put it all together, there is a good chance the computer still throws a code, and then that costs them 10 more hours. The crank bolt laughed at a 1/2" air impact wrench. I tried building a fixture out of angle iron, but it just twisted and ripped. Hacking it was just not working out and was wasting a lot of time and money. So I ended up ordering the crank holder from Pelican parts and got four M8x30 hex bolts at the hardware store (upsetting it didn't come with those). I got a 3/4" breaker bar and 27mm air impact socket from Harbor Freight. The 27mm socket was 1/2" drive, so I used a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter made for air impact. I propped the crank holder handle on a pile of bricks and put a 3ft iron pipe over the breaker bar. At that point, the bolt came loose almost too easily. The right tools for the right job! This was as of last night, so I have a lot of work ahead.

You put the zip tie as far up on the guide as you can, it don't have to be tight, just tight enough so the chain don't come loose. (You actually don't have to zip the guides, you can just zip the chain together.) Mount the lower chain cover, put in the chain tensioner "finger tight". Take a plier to hold the zip tie and cut it with a side cuter or something. Job done.

@Ghost-vr5zg
@Ghost-vr5zg 6 жыл бұрын
I heard most people just use some type of gasket sealer generously as to replace that seal would require removing the upper oil pan which involves removing the subframe and supporting the engine from above. I have my engine stripped down to where I need the timing set tools (comes in the next day or two) and I plan on using gasket sealer instead of removing the upper oil pan. That being said my oil pump chain is loose so I may have to anyways.

hey Nathan I have a 2001 BMW 740il when I turn the key all the lights come on but no crank no start so I checked the engine crank to manually turn it with a breaker bar with 27 mm socket and I can turn it back and forth so the engine is good I assume so I am going to put a new starter on the vehicle to see it it turns

Does the engine have to be out of the car to do this?or can you do it while it's in the vehicle

Gerald Portnoy it can be done either way, but it’s way easier with the engine out.

Nathan, I'm planning on replacing the upper and lower gaskets. I'm assuming I don't have to deal with timing for this project. Will removing the chain tensioner bolt on the upper left side cause any issues to simply bolt back in when i'm done replacing gaskets? Thanks in advance and great vids! +1 sub

Anthony Hernandez just remake sure the Gould don't fall down when you remove the passenger timing case

Thank you for the quick response. I'm walking out the door I'll have to rewatch the 1st video where you took off the tensioner. It's embarrassing but i'm not sure what this "gould" is so hopefully re-watching it will make sense. again thank you for the video & quick response. -Anthony

A quick google shows the tensioner parts that are involved. Not sure if the "gould" is one of these parts (possibly the tensioner shaft?) cdn4.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/BMW-X5/105-ENGINE-M62_Engine_Upper_Timing_Cover_Gasket_and_VANOS_Solenoid_Replacement/images_small/pic32.jpg

Hmmm that would have to be the mail chain off slightly, did you use the tensioner tool and snug it by hand? Did you let the passenger chain guide fall down when you were putting the cover on?

Nathan's DIY Garage well it was done by a mechanic and he close it. he had the zip tie on it. i wish somehow i can send you pictures. sometimes on cold weather you can feel the engine has like a small vibration. revs fine and accelerates great.

I have done this job to my 03 540i and have had to go back and remove upper covers once so far to re time, and about to start the second time to fix p0011 and 0021 codes. I think one issue was with tensioner install procedure. But when removing the blocks, should any of the cam shafts rotate? My passenger side exhaust cam keeps rotating clockwise a bit when removing the blocks. Is any movement normal or is that a sign of a possible mistake in the procedure?

Logan Gardner yes the problem is if you are using the cheap eBay timing kit, apparently the vanos jigs are not accurate enough, also the German auto solutions kit is the only one that works, the whole kit is anodized red.

Nathan's DIY Garage so you think the problem is in the kit jigs? I purchased it of Amazon and they are not the red ones. Came in a blue box, but are just plane metal black.

I have these same exact codes after timing chain job. did you end up re-timing? I found a lot of other minor possible solutions. I know it can range from wrong oil, debris, sensor and or timing. look forward to hearing from you. thx

You will have to remove both valve covers and both upper timing chain covers and you will need the m62tu timing tool kit

Had to be the annoying TU I've noticed through reading various forums and speaking with various owners that the TU motor guides fail more often than the lifetime rated ones in 97 98 pre vanos m62s. Also a lot of engines can keep running with the guides old it isn't until they are taken apart that they actually completely fail in most cases
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
+Hakim Scott The m60 engines have a sprocket instead of guides but the m62 pre vanos fail just as fast ad the TU engines, its not a terrible job as long as you dont get one that the chain had de-railed and bends the valves, every BMW shop will swear to you they do this timing job all the time but when it comes down to it 99% of them wont touch it, they just want to swap the engine, the problem is that usually the engine they swap into it needs guides also lol

I have an M60 and got oil pressure warning while driving fast then i backed off gas & engine gently seized while i was coasting to a stop. Was able to limp home after engine cooled down. A few aluminium shavings in oil filter afterwards. Long story short, my stupid mechanics had no idea what the problem was, so i investigated & found bits of plastic had fallen into sump and were sucked onto grill on intake to oil pump, blocking it, so i removed junk from sump & drove it for a while gently afterwasrds and it smoothed out and ran ok for 6 months, then suddenly developed very nasty rattle and i stopped driving it. I reckon the plastic i pulled out of sump couldve been a broken up sprocket, or bits of a guide. This was 4 years ago before these youtube videos were appearing. I remember poring over engine diagrams and i don't remember seeing anything like the timing chain guides, though it was a long time ago. Does the M60 not have guides like the M62 in this video? I fired the engine up yesterday after 4 years and it stll runs with rattle. With M60, is it likely i can get away with just replacing a sprocket, borrow the timing kit from someone, and checking the timing is ok? Ta for any advice!

Have just been looking at a few other pages to refresh my memory, and it sounds like the M60 uses almost exactly the same tensioner & guide rails as the M62? Halp can you pls explain what you meant when you said M60 has sprocket instead of guides...thanks.
@An_Idiot_in_the_Wild
@An_Idiot_in_the_Wild 7 жыл бұрын
Aaah i think i've worked it out, the sources who say M60 is exactly the same are wrong... the tensioner & guides are mostly identical but the m60 has a sprocket at the bottom of the V shaped guide in the middle, and people say the sprocket is much more reliable & causes less wear than the plastic V shaped guide without sprocket. Nevertheless, it seems to me even with my M60 & sprocket, some plastic from one of the guides has disintegrated.
