Children start their Jedi training at extremely young ages, and clearly much younger than Anakin. Yoda's statement of "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering" is a warning of what can happen when Jedi fall prey to their selfish emotions. Jedi must be completely devoted to The Force, so they need to be able to have control over their emotions and limit their personal attachments, even to family members like their parents. So they have to start their Jedi training before those emotional attachments can develop. Jedi are meant to be selfless, but emotional attachments like familial or romantic love can make you act in selfish and even dangerous ways, putting your own desires over the needs of others.

Which is why they're taken in by the Jedi at a young age and not permitted to have any connection to their loved ones. This prevents them from having emotional attachments that could lead them to the dark side.

Now imagine those abducted children are in Africa and turn the lightsaber into an AK... 😬 The Jedi are just sci-fi child soldiers. That the Republic relies on them and thereby condones their actions makes it worse.

Except it can also lead them to be disconnected from other non-Jedi beings and not being able to understand others. It can also force social beings who become Jedi to form even tighter bonds to other Jedi. None of it is good. And since they also don't properly teach the younglings about how to truly deal with attachments, feelings and failure, it can cause all sorts of problems with new Jedi. They teach suppression and not how to truly deal with them. Those are the biggest flaws with Jedi teachings, in my opinion, and can lead many down the dark path.

The Naboo “jet” is modeled after the American SR71 reconnaissance plane. As for Jar Jar Binks, the character is… Honestly, it doesn’t matter who you are - whatever your ideology, ethnicity, or social status - the character has only one redeeming quality: He brought the people into the fight… as badly as they did. But at least they did the decoy.

The new enemies and the canyon action adds a lot. The special effects are top notch and the story picks up after a while. Seeing Anakin fall from grace is heartbreaking, but deep down he hated the one who made him that way. Thank you for sharing this reaction. May the Force be with you.

"There's always a bigger fish." Fun Fact: Film debut of Ahmed Best. Actor Preparation Fact: Ewan McGregor studied many of Sir Alec Guinness's films, including Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), to ensure accuracy in everything, from his accent to the pacing of his words. Cameos Cameos Fact: Producer Rick McCallum appears on the right, in a floppy wide-brim hat, when Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) meets Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Sound designer Ben Burtt appears to the left of Rick McCallum (with goatee). Visual effects supervisor John Knoll plays the Naboo pilot who gets killed during the space battle. Sound Effects Fact: The sound of the underwater monsters growling near the beginning of the film was made by the main sound technician Ben Burtt's three-year-old daughter. The sound of her crying was recorded and the frequency lowered to obtain the sound heard in the film. To create the sounds of the spectators during the pod race scene, sound designer Ben Burtt took a recorder to a San Francisco 49ers game, and recorded the crowd's reactions. Double Duty Fact: At the time of the film's release, the producers ran a disinformation campaign to suggest that Natalie Portman played both Padmé and The Queen at all times. In fact, they are not always the same person. For many sections of the film, notably those where The Queen is wearing the black outfit with the huge feather headdress, she is actually a decoy, played by Keira Knightley. The real queen, Portman, is actually disguised as a handmaiden. Various conflicting public statements make it extremely difficult to figure out who is who. Whole websites are devoted to figuring out which actress is playing which. However I have seen some people that can tell which is which. The Rest Of The Story Fact: Liam Neeson was so eager to be in the film that he signed on without having read the script. Keira Knightley's parents tried to convince her not to audition, but the twelve-year-old actress still sought a role, given she was a Star Wars fan. Jake Lloyd has said that he retired from acting because of the trauma he experienced after playing Anakin Skywalker. According to Lloyd, other children constantly teased him about the role, for example, making lightsaber sounds whenever he walked by. Lloyd also said that the situation was made worse because, in his opinion, the film did not meet the fans' expectations. Despite this, Lloyd has reprised the role of Anakin in several video games and has appeared at Star Wars conventions and events.

"Jar Jar Binks was the first ever truly successful CGI character - because nobody complained about his CGI, they only complained about how insufferable the character was. We all COMPLETELY believed in Jar Jar Binks." -Leigh Grainer, Mostly Walking, 2018 Say what you will, he was an absolute technical marvel for the time. I grew up watching the prequels and when I was older, watching countless videos about them. Even today, the focus is never the quality of his CGI - just his character. He's just as real to everyone as any human character, and I think that's amazing. And yes, having watched many others react to these films, I've seen countless people who had no preconceived notions of Jarjar who actually loved him, much to the disappointment of their comments. 😂 Some people just find him to be a fun, silly character, but you're right that he's objectively pointless - although I subscribe to the theory that he was intended to be the true Phantom Menace.

I think my biggest problem with Phantom Menace is that it tries to have its cake and eat it too, by balancing its kid friendly elements like the slapstick lampoon comedy of Jar Jar, while also having a lot of dense Galactic political stuff like Senate proceedings and diplomatic tensions, like we're watching Mr Smith Goes to Coruscant. The film is clearly trying to please everyone at the same time and it just doesn't work. I think that's why you see a big dramatic tone change in Revenge of the Sith and to a lesser extent in Attack of the Clones, because Lucas realised that he couldn't keep sitting on the fence and actually had to pick a side moving forward.

A padawan is a jedi apprentice (with the rat tail). Obi-wan is a padawan at the movie beginning and Anakin is Obi-wan's padawan at the time. Jedi usually snatch children very young so they can replace the parents with the Jedi cult in the child's affection and loyalty. There was a Palpatine in Episode 4? (Winks with wrong eye.) Really? Anakin does stay in the cockpit. The Gungan shield is based on water surface tension, the same shields that keeps water out of their buildings. It can be walked through, but selectively stops some things. The boss Gungan is voiced by the great Brian Blessed. Darth Maul is Ray Parks. He's not a good actor, but excellent at martial arts. You can see how he controls his center of mass as he moves in the fights.

I feel like if Qui-Gon had lived, Anakin might have still turned but it may have been a bit different because Qui-Gon would have made Anakin feel like he could talk to him about his problems and not simply be told to let go of everything. Qui-Gon is my favorite Jedi across the saga, not just because Liam Neeson portrays him, but because he comes across as a wise sage who sees and embraces a larger picture of the Force than most Jedi would.

22:59 "The _battle_ is a _diversion."_ Queen Amidala demonstrates the most _incredible_ tactical aptitude. _Especially_ for her youth. In the US Armed Forces, they teach a list of leadership principles, one of which _clearly_ states, "Be technically and tactically proficient." Additionally, a military treatise first published in the 5th century BC, called _The Art of War,_ by the ancient Chinese General and military philosopher Sun Tzu is required reading at every military academy we have in the US, and probably the military academies of many _other_ countries. It has the words, "All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near." So, first, note Amidala's knack for deploying a _decoy._ _You_ saw through it, but only because you had previously seen Amidala as Natalie _Portman._ The Gungans were taken _in_ by it. Even the _Jedi_ were taken in by it up until the big _reveal._ But second, note her assessment about the forthcoming battle. Her adviser warns her that the prospects for victory are not good and she replies that victory in this particular battle is _irrelevant,_ because it's a diversion from the battle that _really_ matters. It's a _big, dramatic, conspicuous_ display that does a good job of making it look like the Naboo/Gungan task force is pushing for _one_ objective, to compel the occupation to dispatch forces to _oppose_ it that will direct necessary forces away from _other_ points, making them vulnerable to a siege from a much _smaller, inconspicuous_ force. By and large, this movie falls _far_ short of the standards set by the _original_ trilogy, but its _tactics_ are _brilliant._

The phantom menace ; is Darth Sidious ! who is the single greatest representation of the Sith emerging from - thought (extinction) .. but Darth Sidious plan was to infiltrate the republic and create division which would ultimately effect the Jedi order, .. which was his primary target!! so in this movie Darth Sidious creates a trade dispute preventing access via trade routes to Naboo, however Ben Kenobi’s master Qui Gon realised there is no purpose in it, thus allowing the senate to focus on a way in which to settle the dispute!! and at the same time without being detected!!!allow Darth Sidious the necessary time to begin play for a place within the senate and then make way for his true mission …. eradicate the Jedi order …. The story continues

14:45 _"Fear_ is the path to the _Dark_ Side." That's a line that just might end up a tad _cloying,_ as you work your way through the prequel trilogy. Emotions in this trilogy, _somehow,_ keep ending up a path to the _Dark_ Side. Being a Sith _sucks,_ because the only emotions you can feel are _anger_ and _rage._ But wouldn't you know, being a _Jedi_ sucks, _too,_ because you have to be _stoic_ about everything. Paths to the Dark Side are all _over_ the place. You can't let anything make you _happy,_ because happiness leads to the _Dark_ Side. You can't let anything make you _angry,_ because anger leads to the _Dark_ Side. You can't let anything make you _sad,_ because sadness leads to the _Dark_ Side. In training as a Jedi, one learns to do a lot of really cool things with the _Force,_ but one dares not _appreciate_ them, because it eventually begins to seem as if such appreciation, somehow, leads to the _Dark_ Side. 🤷‍♂

The one thing to like about Jar Jar is the theory George wanted him to the big Sith lord pulling the strings behind everything. He starts as a goofy character that a bit annoying, like Yoda the first time he shows up (and the famous line from George himself: "It's like poetry, they rhyme"). Jar Jar "accidents" himself into the polot by running into the two main Jedi, who just let him tag along eveywhere, suggesting he used the "Jedi mind trick" on them. There's scenes where he's off to the side moving his hands and mouthing something as other characters make decisions, like Obi-Wan did back in New Hope. He openly mocks Qui-Gon, the Jedi authority in front of Anakin in attempt to make him see Jedi as foolish. There was something about him standing next to Palpatine in few shots, but I don't remember that one precicesly. Now, as crazy as that may sound, I'm willing to believe it for one reason. Despite everything, the merchandise from the movie was selling like crazy, so George's inverstors or his marketing team clearly like that, but I like to imagine someone told him to seriously kill off this character for the next movie, or they might not get away with it again. While binks doesn't die, he's a cameo at best from now on.

Jedi usually took force sensitive babies from their families at very young age, because they should not have any attachments to anyone except the Force, the Jedi code forbidd any emotional part of life like family (they are space monks) this is one of the major differences between the Jedi and the Sith
@rikk319
@rikk319 5 ай бұрын
The Jedi have never been portrayed as forbidding emotion like love, but attachment, possessiveness, and jealousy--in other words, negative emotions. Anakin even explains this to Padme in the next film on their way to Naboo.
@Arkilonn_
@Arkilonn_ 5 ай бұрын
@@rikk319 This is a very clever trick, but in fact the love of a Jedi could not be for a specific person, what Anakin described is a feeling of empathy for all living things, love cannot be not all-consuming and not obsessive, this feeling led the most expensive to the dark side, so you're wrong

Jedi Padawans traditionnaly begin their training (teken from their parents) at the age of 3 yo... talk about a Dalaï Lama type situation. The lyrics during the Duel of the Fates soundtrack are in Sanscrit, talking about Good and Evil and the inevitability of them eventually doomed to collide with eachother. That music is so epic. Jar Jar serves his purpose; being a clumsy comedic relief that even the in-universe characters hate (not just us although I never really hated him, I just tolerate him being in this story), look at it this way, Jedi piss at him, his former chief, Boss Nass pisses at him and takes all opportunities to get rid of him, even by promoting him as a general because being on the front line while being clumsy is the best way to get killed while still being seemingly honored, all aliens hate him. Even C-3PO doesn't like him, R2 D2 jus farts at him.. Barely only Padmé takes him seriously. So that impression is also given by the story itself. I remember is SW Galactic Battlegrounds video game Gungan campaigns that their politicians are quite egotistical and scheeming. Otherwise they are a brave people, they got to shine is some episodes of The Clone Wars. I wouldn't like to battle a properly trained Gungan commando team to be honest. (if you see that series you'll understand what I mean) Midichloriens are like Mithochondria but they serve as interface to feel the Force. The more you have, the more you'll feel it. Most people have just a few so the Force influences them through their instincts without them knowing, like Han Solo (my theory); no wonder he always gets so lucky. (remember Obi Wan saying that there is no such thing as luck, as far as the Force is concerned. The Trade Federation uses cheap droids to enforce their positions because their own soldiers cost too much and are too much of cowards to really fight. It works in great numbers and against poorly armed opponents but against Jedi and well prepared armies, it just doesn't cut it. Naboo was supposed to be a pacifist world, easy to conquer. (pacifist but still with some security forces and a good dose of self defense training) The interior of the Naboo Palace (throne room, corridors and great staircase) were filmed in Caserta Palace (with some set modifications), near Naples, yes Naboo looks like Italy for a reason... The rest if in a studio. I was in England during Summer 1999. I saw that movie twice before it came in my own country. The second time was the last weekend and a monitor from our group of the linguistic exchange trip, was posted in the corner of the street of the cinema to forbid us to go watch it. I went to the otherside of the block to get to the cinema from the other end of the street, duh, they garded only one side !!! As dumb as those stormtroopers !!! Despite the flaws, I liked the movie enough to watch it twice there and twice later in my country. Fun fact, back then, they used a puppet for Yoda but it was not on par with the Original Trilogy quality, they hated it. So when they switched to CGI in Ep2, they went back to Ep1 to replace the bad puppet with the Ep2 CGI, the one you saw because they were quite satisfied of how the CGI turned out in that second movie. Jar Jar Binks was made by having an actor play the role with a big Gungan head on his own head for height reference, despite that, sometimes Ewan looks directly at the actor's face beneath the character supposed head. And yes, the character is played by a black dued imitating a black accent from somewhere, it's deliberate. I bet that they have their own language but their Galactic Basic (English for us) speech is... broken. Darth Maul was one of the best things of this movie, Qui Gon is easily my favorite Jedi. As you noticed, the Jedi grew a little condescendant and out of touch having nobody to challenge them in a thousand years. Even Yoda. So having to face a potential threat via the Force with Anakin's future being so clouded makes them very afraid when a Jedi should first and formost SUBMIT to the Will of the Force and not try to bind it to their will (what the Sith usually do). Qui Gon is the embodiment of that traditional Jedi behaviour, he obeys the Force while the Coucil tries to go against it to avoid facing their fears, aka eventually be challenged and lose their power. But the next two episodes as well as Clone Wars will be a harsh reminder to the Jedi that they let themselves be blinded by their comfort and arrogance. The Sith played to that, keeping a low profile for a thousand years to get prepared, set their pawns in place before striking at the proper moment....

For me, the only worthwhile elements were the pod race and the improved saber fighting. My reaction to Jar Jar was right on par with yours (but I can tolerate him in the Clone Wars series). The other negative was the midichlorians. When Anakin had to leave his mom and friends and his village and leaving his life behind...That brings me to this. The Jedi code ... as a normal emphatic human being... is at least for me... the Jedi Code... is Shit. Yes, you have to be young like 3-4 years old like the Shaolin Monks start training. Maybe also because kids are easily to be manipulated. No matter what your intentions might be. There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force. Even when fellow Jedi died in battle.. no emotion. No Love nor Hate, nor Joy or Sadness.. they become one with the force. The end.. YES! Without a doubt in my mind! That is shit. That's not how people (and aliens in that case) works. Of course not everything is black or white, but the character Made Windu, for example, was practically stolen from the Jedi Order by his parents at the age of 3 because of his strong connection to the Force... this causes fear of loss and guilt complexes... which also lead to the "dark side" ... the Jedi are themselves to blame because of their traditional behaviour that people like a Darth Vader can or could exist in that case... Seriously, no being is always at peace hell this extreme detachment is not something you should strive for, every psychiatrist should IMHO be horrified by this, denying your emotions, bottling them up etc. is not healthy because you will snap in time! Emotional control and balance are more important! You are allowed to be angry, but you should never lash out in anger! People who have strong connections to others and learned to deal with their darker impulses IMHO know this - the Jedi do not, almost all of them were torn/ripped from their families at a young age and then indoctrinated! They never learned how to deal with resentment, hatred etc. like normal people learn because their parents teach them!

Yes, JarJar is bastardizing Jamaican. The actor got some redemption. He was the Jedi who saved Grogu from Order 66 during Mando season 3. Lucas thinks his movies are for 12 year olds, and require comic relief (C3PO). He doesn't seem to understand those 12 year old fans are now 50. 🙄 Being hated wasn't the kid's fault. He did what he could with the dialogue and direction given to him by Lucas.

I saw this when I was 8. Jar Jar didn't bother me then, and was meant to be comedic relief. As an adult, I can definitely see why people would hate the character, although they took it too far and poured hate (and racism) on the actor as well just like they did with Anakin's actor. If you've seen all of The Mandalorian, a fun fact is the actor, Ahmed Best, got a bit of a redemption as the Jedi Master who rescued Grogu. These movies have always been intended for children. I think a lot of the fandom that are adults just take them too seriously. George Lucas also made the prequels without the editing help of his ex-wife, who was a big reason why the originals were as good as they were. He wrote and directed all 3 prequels and has admitted he's not great at dialogue, so keep that in mind (especially for the next one, which personally is my least favorite movie, sequels included, although I actually like them). Long story short, Star Wars is meant for kids, and George wrote Jar Jar for them to laugh at his stupidity. He does at least get fleshed out more in the Clone Wars series and isn't as annoying.

As far as the Jedi go, they usually recruit people way younger than Anakin. People recruited at older ages have more attachments and psychological issues and are more prone to turn to the dark side because of it. Usually they recruit children before they get attached to their families to avoid this.

Which, to me, paints the Jedi as a weak ethos. If you have to train someone from a blank slate or else they turn evil... that's a problem with the teaching methods or the material 😅

So much of the prequels casts the Jedi in an... interesting light, shall we say. Look past how the movies portray them and look at their actions. They take children younger than Anakin from their parents, train them in a lifestyle of asceticism and combat, and arm them with probably THE deadliest weapon in the galaxy 😬 The Jedi are a cult who train child soldiers... Anakin would have been fine if they left him on Tatooine 😅

I was a kid when the original trilogy came out. I was a young adult when the prequels came out. I enjoyed them, but there was a lot of controversy about whether they were good or not. Jar Jar was definitely NOT a beloved character. Many people thought that George Lucas sold out by making the character Jar Jar to appeal to the kids. I didn’t like him. Great reaction, btw!

Glad to see you continuing with Star Wars, even if you were annoyed constantly by Jar Jar. I look forward to watching the rest of your Star Wars videos, but I would like to make a suggestion. After you finish with the prequel trilogy, I recommend that you watch Fanboys, as it is about a group of friends that try to steal a print of Episode 1 before their friend dies of cancer. Seeing as how you enjoyed the original, you will appreciate the nods and cameos throughout, with Lucas allowing sound effects and actual props from his movies to be used in the film.

17:29 "Like, don't the Jedi Council... know that, you know, people can _change?"_ That's not really the issue, here. Facts like this lead me to suspect that, deep down, George Lucas must be a bit of a _determinist._ Determinism is the school of thought, in philosophy, that holds that free will is an illusion because all decisions are a reaction to phenomena that previously existed outside of one's awareness. Whatever decisions you end up making tomorrow you were always _going_ to make; that much is not _up_ to you. Anakin Skywalker was the only human being with reflexes fast enough for _pod_ racing because he was able to see events an _instant_ before they happened. That means those events were _destined_ to happen because _everything_ that happens was destined to happen. Such a state is not compatible with the notion that free will exists.

Also I don't think they were trying to make fun of anyone's real accent. I've heard this complaint before but I don't think it holds water. I think they were just trying to come up with a funny alien accent for the Gungans and this was what they settled on. Finally, it isn't supposed to be English any of the characters are speaking, it is versions of Galactic Basic I believe, except for the specific points where it is pointed out they are speaking something different.

🔔 SHREE @ 20:09 GOOD NEWS! "The Phantom Edit "Star Wars Episode I.I: The Phantom Edit is a fan edit of the film Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, removing many elements of the original film. The purpose of the edit, according to creator Mike J. Nichols, was to make a much stronger version of The Phantom Menace based on the previous execution and philosophies of film storytelling and editing of George Lucas.[1] The Phantom Edit was the first unauthorized re-edit of The Phantom Menace to receive major publicity and acclaim and is also considered the first fan-edit of a feature film ever to be shared by an online audience.[2][3]" [The Wikipedia article goes into the details but Y/T blocked posting them here!]

Personally, when I first saw this movie, I just found Jar Jar kind of _annoying._ I did _not_ respond with the kind of hostility he provoked in _you._ I see what they were _trying_ to do with Jar Jar. Yoda was introduced in _Episode V._ He was a masterfully written sage who complemented the canon _perfectly._ His introduction provided a sense of _profundity_ that the disappearance of Obi Wan, in _Episode IV_ had _robbed_ us of. That feeling was a result, I think, that they were trying to _duplicate_ with Jar Jar. I have to figure, though, that _surely,_ they could've done better.

I think I can appreciate young Anakin a little more now than I could as a kid. As a kid, I only wanted to see who I thought were the cool or badass characters, so having more focus on a child actor was not too appealing to me in this or pretty much any movie growing up. But now I see that if they wanted to tell the origin of Vader it makes sense to start from childhood to get the full picture. I still do consider this the weakest film of this trilogy though, and I still find Jar Jar to be a total failure of a "comic relief" character and yes, a hundred times more annoying than Ewoks.

Padawan is a rang, not a name
@gabytheonedd2695
@gabytheonedd2695 5 ай бұрын
Additionally, sometimes also referred to as an apprentice. Padawan would be the rank within the Jedi Order and apprentice is kind of more a descriptor as apprentice generally describes a learner. Probably sometimes a Padawan was referred to as a apprentice in dialogue in the movies so that the term Padawan wasn't overused. And I suppose among the Sith that apprentice is not only the general descriptor but the rank (if I'm not mistaken). So Obi-Wan is a Padawan for most of the movie - although he is a senior Padawan on the verge of completing his Trials to become a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan is 25 in this movie (note - Anakin is 9) and has been Qui Gon's Padawan since his early teens. So they were partnered together for over a decade. Then after his and Qui Gon's encounter with Darth Maul basically the Jedi Council considered that encounter as Obi-Wan's "trials" and granted him the rank of Knight. Then upon having achieved that rank Obi-Wan was able to take on a apprentice of his own and hence Anakin become his Padawan. Which was likely not the most typical path. I believe that for a while after becoming a Knight most Jedi are sent on missions or undertake some task and gain experience and knowledge before taking a Padawan. I mention this because Obi-Wan went straight from Padawan to Knight into having a apprentice of his own in like a matter of days so he never had the chance to have that time to gain experience or even the opportunity at having any input into who his Padawan would be. Have to give some credit to Obi-Wan he certainly can keep a promise - even if it means defying the Jedi Council and pushing away red flags going up or giving up the opportunity just to be a Knight on his own for a while. He made a promise and he wasn't breaking it - maybe not the wisest choice but a promise meant something to him. Also, it must be that there is just a lot of info to take in or something. Why is it so many reactors don't catch on that Ewan is Obi-Wan until Anakin is introduced to him. Qui Gon very clearly addresses him as Obi-Wan twice prior to that. I would say it's that they are maybe following Anakin very closely and miss it, but Qui Gon calls him by name in the very first scene he was in which is before Anakin even appears. Odd, but oh well just have to go with the flow I guess.

I didn't really like that famous actors and characters drop in this movie happened along side with important information Mace Windu (Samuel Jackson's character), Yoda and Ki-Adi-Mundi (long headed guy) were talking about the fact that the Sith were extinct for a millennium (as Jedi thought) and attack on the Qui Gon made not by some rouge Jedi, but by a warrior who had tattoo of the ancient Sith order was a pretty big deal
