PART 2 The bees burned in the Dixie Fire - Largest single wildfire in California

The California Beekeeper

Күн бұрын

This is the second video of a two part series- Beekeeper and Commercial Queen Breeder, Jose Uribe, heads up to our Lassen Yard to assess the bees. The Dixie Fire previously rolled through the property and our bees had survived thanks to the ranch team on watch and firefighters which were staged on site. Unfortunately, the week following, an amber flew into the bee yard and ignited half of the yard. Sadly we lost 36 colonies in total. This video was shot towards the end of July; by August 6th the fire had grown to become the largest single (i.e. non-complex) wildfire in California's history.
Once at the property, Jose meets up with Steve Graham and chats with him briefly about the fire burning through the property and the natural spring housing that was destroyed, as well as work done to save the oldest standing barn in California. It was built in 1867-187; it took 3 years to build, all by hand, and was the first homestead in Plumas County. The team was stationed at the property for several weeks, equipped with fire hoses and water to put out any spot fires and protect the structures from burning.
As dusk falls, Jose loads what is left of the remaining bees onto the truck and heads east to relocate them onto a new ranch for the time being. Despite the new yard being 45 minutes away, it is also threatened by the Dixie Fire. Feeling confidant about their safety, Jose leaves the bees at the new location which is surrounded by irrigated alfalfa fields. While at the yard, he briefly shares how to introduce new foundation to existing colonies.
If you placed a queen order with us this year… thank you! We are passionate about what we do and are working to make a big difference in the industry.
If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 12 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019, and launched our KZfaq channel in April of 2020. We specialize in queen breeding, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

Jose, Thanks for covering this historic building. I'm a Lassen Co. CA born (RVN vet) (retired fireman) and current resident of Red Bluff, and a hobby bee keeper. Glad you enjoyed the historic barn, eventually we'll share more of its history and back story in detail because it's all so intriguing! Stay in touch!

Best wishes from Australia to you, stay safe. Bushfires are a way of life over here and the hardest decisions are always to stay and fight or leave early and hope for the best. Large fires make their own weather and winds, predicting what that means on the ground beforehand is almost impossible. Your prep was as good as it could be so I think you can be happy you saved as many as you did with that.

I know you have moved the hives, but I was watching a firefighting video where they wrapped a small building with aluminum foil to protect from embers. YT probably suggested the video based on this one, but thought I might mention it as cheap protection? Most likely the pallets caught first, maybe just going around the outside on the bottom like they did with the barn, putting metal roofing material against the bottom? Anyways, can't change what happened, but maybe an idea if you are ever faced with an uncertain situation...

Pretty scary to have this happen. Hope you get through it man. I was going to say... I was trying out mini-nucs the styrofoam ones... where I'm at the robbing was too fierce to even keep them alive. But its also our biggest and worst drought in our entire state history. So maybe its a bad year to try them. I wonder if they'd work in a year that wasn't this bad on the drought, but darn they are sure hard to get through the robbing season when they are just started. The few times I'd commented here you'd always been a really nice guy and replied. I sincerely hope you get through it or get help on recovery because you seem like the kind of person we'd want to get through it. (But I don't know if California will be a safe place in the future. Lots of anarchy there.)

Noah, with a little time and challenges that you face I know you will find a way to manage these mini mating nucs. If we can run thousands and overcome the robbing, heat and critters I KNOW you can too. These things are not easy but neither is beekeeping 😆🤷🏻‍♂️ If you have any questions you can always reach out and I’d be happy to help you with questions you have. My methods aren’t always good for everyone but most definitely work for my area. It’s a great big challenging ordeal but can be fun also. We love learning and growing with knowledge. Some of the most valuable things we learned have happened with mistakes. Thanks for dropping by and commenting Noah. We love California and just pray we can prevent this from happening to us and them again by being more proactive. ✌🏼

Sorry for your lost. Native american indians would pre-burn during Winter/Spring. Maybe, pre-burn in the future. All you can do is move your hives on top of where the land is burned. Once burned it won't re-burn this season.
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper

Yes they would be be safer if it was burned but still all it takes is a hot ember on a windy day to land onto a hive and Poof!🔥 We hope this never happens to us again by just getting them out of harms way, that’s the only way of ensuring they will not burn.
