Trying out a modified gear shift linkage upgrade and bush arrangement to try and fix the rather crude factory shift mechanism. Also, fitting Tec Bike Parts Adjustable Levers to make up for my small hands!

Thanks for the how to video. I just bought a meteor 350 and was worried about the gear linkage. I managed to get one sent to New Zealand. We are off to Napier on Wednesday to pick the bike up and bring it back to Auckland. It will be quite an adventure. I haven't riden for 50 years, so my old friend will ride it most of the way. It is good the way bikes bring people together.

Thanks very much, I hope you enjoy your new bike. I had to google how far it is from Napier to Auckland and it's nearly 5 hours drive, that's even longer than going the whole length of Wales, I could even get to Scotland in that time. I'm sure it'll come back to you quickly. The gear change is absolutely usable and not terrible, just can be better, it might vary from bike to bike too👍

Yes it is a long trip. We will be doing it over three days. I'm doing refresher lessons at the moment which will be a help. By the way, I love your bike. I've watched all your videos which have been very helpful. I'm surprised you haven't done the Camshaft mode. @@GlynOC

I'm going to get used to it as is for a bit and then get a cam then, so I can enjoy the benefit properly. I've got a KTM 390 which is great for being nippy but it catches up to cars too quick (the UK is very claustrophobic road-wise), the RE's are great because it feels like the road is bigger!

Hi Glyn I have the bike in my garage now. The trip was excellent. My friend, who rode the bike for me really enjoyed it. I rode it 40km along the straights of the Napier Taupo highway. I won't mention what happened when I came to a roundabout. Lets just say the bike needs a new clutch lever. Still the experience was of great value and has set me up for the next training lesson. Your clutch lever video will come in handy.

Another cracking video Glyn, it’s the finishing touches that make a bike so much nicer to ride, I’ve gone for the tecbike gear lever and linkage as it eliminates all the slop and removes the heal shift as I don’t like them ( had one on a previous bike) got the kit before the bike arrived 😂 all the best buddy 👍

Thanks Mike, they've really elevated the bike, it feels much more 'expensive' now rather than slightly clattery and awkward. I'm thinking they're the best value Meteor Mods now 👍 I think the Heel and Toe works with my matching small feet (and I used to have it on my Honda Cub once upon a time of course)

What a vast improvement there Glyn. 😊 looks very good quality, and is super sturdy…….defo order this up. Be another job for Calum at CD Copland Motors in Monfieth to do. The TEC levers, is what I got fitted for my Wee hands too, they are a big improvement, you be happy with them, for sure. Great video Glyn. Cheers.🍻

Good idea Mark, shouldn't take them long 👍 I probably dragged the arse out of it 😊 The levers are already impressive and the action is certainly smoother. That and the linkage felt like a big upgrade in feel for the bike

@@GlynOC for sure Glyn. I was very impressed by the fit. Definitely more solid. Already gone and ordered. So big thanks. Never had an issue in use, but defo looks a bit tacky (original, that is) Bloody horrible weather out there, just been out to check the radiator in the garage. 😂

Hi glyn. With this known problem of the slack gear shift linkages, why doesn't the Enfield factory fit this more sturdy new part as the new standard ? Love the new set of levers too. Keep up the good work mate ! Brian

The little rod isn't toooo bad (although it will wear longer holes by itself) but the pivot is pretty poor, just a slightly better fit on the bushing would fix it (and a proper bolt with a shank on it). At least the fix is easy and inexpensive, maybe the newer ones are better?

Lovely! It's great to find your channel. If you don't mind me asking...what are the reasons that you own both Meteor and Classic 350s? Which would you use for longer distance rides? And if only one is to be had, which one would you part with? Thanks!

I just like them! I've not ridden the Classic, or any Classic (apart from an old type Bullet). They're essentially the same bike and it just depends on whether you like the feet forward position on the Meteor or not. Some people find it doesn't work well with the butt/back so it's down to how you like to sit I guess 👍

Hi Glyn.. I ended up getting rid of my heel toe shifter and replaced it with the one from TEC …. It’s got no play on it and I don’t get that shifting from first to neutral anymore 👍 Also I got the same brake/clutch lever because I’ve also got small fingers 😢 I can only adjust the clutch lever one notch, due to if it’s in gear and clutch is all the way in, it won’t start… Cheers 🍺

That's a good point, I never tried the starting action afterwards and some have mentioned it can be tricky so I'd better check that next time I go in👍 EDIT: Just checked and starting action is good

Hi Glyn just came across your content, I've acquired a Meteor from my 93 year old father-in-law. He's just hung up his skid lid and gloves for the final time, after riding all his life from the age of 16. I've tried the link for the gear change linkage, unfortunately it's not registering, could I trouble you for some detail so I can track it down. Regards Andy

@GlynOC yes I have seen the other variety too. I liked the pivot and Rose joints on the one you fitted. Tec bike parts do there version too,but not so keen on the linkage. I'll have to keep an eye out for the other to become available. No grease on the lever pivots or master cylinder plunger ?

EDIT: They'll be back up this weekend * I've just messaged him to see if more will be available (they were earlier!) and will let you know. It was a nicely made item. Good call on the grease, there was some on the pivot but I forgot the plunger, thanks for spotting that and I'll check when I go over tomorrow for a play, cheers David

Its MrT i would say the gear connector ball joint at front should join from the back as back foot ld er at back looks quite close ? ?

I can reach the levers on my bikes, but I have noticed I’m getting a tad arthritic. Do you think these might help if I fit them?

Hi Steven, I can only speak for my experience but the clutch action felt smoother and the way the lever is flat made it a better fit for my fingers. Felt more like a 'Japanese' bike with them on, if you know what I mean...

The availability seems to come and go, if you search UK ebay for Meteor gear change there is an alternative available which has a good reputation, or ask on the UK Meteor Facebook Group👍

@@GlynOC *hi Glyn. Did manage to order the linkage kit for my Meteor and a linkage for my Hunter the same evening as your video. Took about 2 weeks to get to Germany. The linkage on the Hunter is good, the linkage kit on the Meteor is fantastic. Fitted and test rode it today and and you wouldn't even know you were selecting through a linkage it's that good. Mine didn't have an oil slot but I prefer to grease it anyway. An old aircraft mechanic trick. Mix a bit of grease with brake cleaner until it is thin as water. Paste it liberally around where you want the grease and leave it to evaporate. You will be left with fresh grease in the joint.
