In Part 1, we showed what fabrics are needed to make a floating front canvas for a bespoke suit coat or jacket, and how to cut and mark them. In Part 2 we how to stitch the layers together using a zig zag sewing machine. Here, we show the traditional way to make a front canvas: pad stitching the layers together by hand, as tailors have done for hundreds of years.

To see somebody just cutting darts freehand is both scarey and amazing. The confidence to just cut into the fabric with minimal markings and just know that you are correct. Awesome. And, I love the sound of really sharp shears cutting through cloth. It inspires me to sharpen my dress making scissors.

Ok so I read your comment early on and didn't think anything of it, cut to that part in the video out of nowhere and my stomach DROPPED

I agree. I would be terrified the first time I used expensive fabric to make any of the cuts, but especially for the darts.

Yes - definitely one of those things that comes with the confidence honed by experience! And totally agree with you on the sweet sound of really sharp shears cutting through cloth! :))

We do too! Artur was one of the first (if not the first) tailors in NYC to train and employ women as tailors - recognizing the idea that men are better tailors than women is solely based in culture and training, not in inherent skill or ability. Most of our tailors are women and a couple have been working with Artur since the early 2000s, having been hired and trained by him at Barbara Matera's famous costume shop years before we opened Artur & Tailors in 2009. They are now some of the most skilled tailors in NYC.

Thank you! Yes, we will continue it! The white threads will only be removed (by hand) at the very end when everything else is finished, right before the final press.

Hello, these tutorials are amazing, everything I need. May I pls know what’s the name of the gray canvas? And what other close fabric we can replace if we do not have access to that? Thank you!

So wouldn't the canvas usually cover the inner lapel too and be pad stitched then the roll line taped?

I noticed the coats from an earlier period on the forms at the beginning of the video. I would love to see the process of making those styles from start to finish. :) I'm making a waistcoat inspired by the Regency period. Would you recommend using canvas or interfacing? I'm quite new to sewing in general, but I'm wondering which would be better for that application. I quite like your channel. I just discovered it today.

Sorry for not noticing this before, but definitely would recommend a sew-in hymo canvas, not a fusible interfacing.

We sell the supplies needed at www.biasbespoke.com. For canvas fronts you just need hymo canvas, horsehair canvas, domette and basting thread.

Is necessary to stiff the fabric before applying the canvas?

Do you mean like with a fusible interfacing over the fabric? We do not recommend using fusible in a jacket front.
