I thought a few videos comparing the Prophet 6 and Prophet 08 might be useful for anyone trying to decide which was the best for them.
The patch created on the Prophet 08 is used as an ambient modular style rhythmic drone here:
• Dave Smith Instruments...
This is part 5 of 5
Here we have a comparison of the filter sections on the Dave Smith Prophet 6 and Prophet 08.
This isn't a technical overview, levels aren't matched perfectly etc. its more a general walkthrough, as if you had the 2 synths to hand in a store. Hopefully it gives a good impression of both synths and their respective capabilities.
This is the last of five parts:
1. Oscillators and Basic Modulation • Part 1 of 5: Prophet 6...
2. Filters • Part 2 of 5: Prophet 6...
3. Making Simple Pads • Part 3 of 5: Prophet 6...
4. Sequencers and Arpeggiators • Part 4 of 5: Prophet ...
5. Complex Pads • Part 5 of 5: Prophet 6...
I've also uploaded a Prophet 08 walkthrough here: • Dave Smith Instruments...
I purchased the Prophet 6 thinking I'd sell the Prophet 08 and have decided i NEED them both ;)
Hopefully you'll find it interesting, maybe useful if you'e considering purchasing one of them. I'm not sure it will help with the decision, as its subjective and I'm not recommending one over the other. Although they have many similarities, they have their place in different situations and for different users.
I made a track with only DSI instruments which can be seen here:
• Sequential Pro 8, Prop...
It's not really showing the capabilities of the synths, but how good they sound performing pretty simple/standard synth duties.
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Starsky.

Thanks for taking the time to create all the P08 vs P6 vids. Really useful for my choice making process!

Great sounding patch and the chord progression you picked gave me Orbital bass lines running through my head with 808/909 hits strung along. Cheers!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I don't live near a store that sells either synth, so I can't compare them myself. My heart wants the P6 and my brain wants the P08. I think I may go with my heart and get the P6, then rely on my Blofeld for more complex stuff that the P6 can't do. They're both fantastic, though. Thanks again.

Nice to be appreciated. I'd hoped they'd help as the choices are expensive decisions :) I'd go with your assumptions. If you've got the cash the p6 is instant gratification and sounds sublime. If you can afford another for additional duties .... Nice one.

Seems like this is the video in the series it really boils down to for me. If complex functionality and more options is a must the 08 is a no brainer. With that said if you are happy with a more bread and butter synth with a more lush sound P6 all the way. You can't go wrong with either though because they are both very quality synths. The REV2 is coming out soon which will further cater to those needing more flexibility at still a fraction of the cost of the P6 which makes it a little harder to go with if money is an issue.

As one who owned a Pro-1 and Prophet-600, and had access to a Prophet-5 that belonged to a friend, the Prophet-6 sounds closest overall to those synths, from any synth Dave Smith has made in recent years, even closer than the Prophet-12, which can do more, and may be Dave's flagship and personal favorite. I think this video in this series cements my feelings about how true the sound of the P-6 is, around 5:00 in, to the end. Having said that, they are close, and if you prefer the '08 to the P-6, then by all means buy that synth and don't look back.

+Phil Anderson I sold the P8 and do miss it. So much more flexible but I lusted after the p6 sound. If the P8 had the fx and extra slop the rev2 has I may not have gone with the p6 in the end.

hi! great vids. really trying to decide between p6 08 and p12. quick question is it possible to automate both of these using a daw do you know. also can either play more than one sound through a daw do you know?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 8 жыл бұрын
Hi. They can both be automated in a DAW. There are editors you can purchase from SoundTower for the P8 and P12. There are 2 versions of each: standalone and plugin (you have to buy both to have access to both the standalone and plugin versions). Neither is really multitimbral, in the sense that they can't play a multitude of tones at the same time... butas each patch contains 2 tones it is possible to play 2 different sounds from a single patch separated by splitting the keyboard. e.g. you could have a bass part in the lower half and lead/pad in the upper half. Both would be on the same MIDI channel, but you have 2 sets of outputs to mix separately through your desk. I've no idea if there are separate outputs on the P12. So yes you can play more than one sound - but you're limited to 2. Complex sounds often have more than one tone layered into a single sound, so it wouldn't be possible if you wanted to play a layered song plus another. If you're using a DAW at least you can record one sound then layer the next (although I appreciate if you're using a lot of automation this can be a pain).

Seems like the osc´s on the P-06 are more detuned than the P-08 right? The P-06 sounds really harsh compared to the P-08, I bet if you tune the osc's more closely together you can make it sound as lush as the P-08

Hi, thanks for the comment. You're probably right. I didn't try too hard to match the patches on each synth as I was demonstrating the additional routing and sound sculpting options of the P8. Interesting though... I know they weren't identical, I actually preferred the P6 version of voice B (the simple defined patch) on the P8. I thought it sounded richer than the same one on the P8.. But again it's possible to get them closer, possibly indistinguishable.

I been stuck on this new P6 and OB6 for a few months. Thank you so much for your time on matching these synths Starsky. I am a P08 owner and always wanted real VCO. But what I have discovered with your videos is they are all up to the task. Not one is any better. You can now buy a P08 for 1k on ebay. That WILL NOT LAST! P08 is so amazing at replicating both P6 and OB6 and brings its own modulation capabilities that far exceed the P6 and OB6. The character of both OB6 and P6 are also so tempting with its unique character. But damn that P08 DCO and Curtis filter is so legendary and massively diverse. If the P08 was VCO it would cost well over 5k.

Thanks for watching. I'd be happy if the P08 had a bit more slop to emulate knackered old VCOs .. Surely just an OS upgrade is needed. I think it would make it so much better.
