A good tip for better throttle response and low end performance is set the TPS voltage at .67 or so ...made a significant improvement on my modded engine maybe it would work on stock an mild motors too 👍

I might be wrong on this but i feel like this is one of those mods that you can only really tell a difference with if you use it in tandem with stuff like exhaust and intake upgrades.. beautiful vette btw

Maybe you already know this, but the chip in and of itself does not provide any real performance gains. However, what the chip does do is prepare your car for additional performance enhancements like exhaust, cold air, cam, and head swaps. When you start adding things that make more power, the fuel map and tables need to be updated to accommodate the additional performance gains. I'm looking forward to doing a TPI Corvette, but I have to finish my '83 Z28 first.

A cat back provides really good power, I went with a TPIS flowmaster system in my 1985 Better.

My best mod to date...got rid of my 1990 and got a 2016 zo6. Power gain of 350hp and tripled the torque

I had an L98 in my Formula 350. Tried a performance chip and shims in the throttle body. Meh... totally not worth it. At one point my mpg dropped to 11mpg. Sure it was faster but nothing great or amazing. Took all the crap out of it and mpg went back to 20mpg. It would still burn the tires like a demon.

Good video. What I do in cases like this is race a friend in his car. That way you can visually see the difference, if any.

the chip is more or less just a timing curve change and transmission shift point. I sent my computer to Kenne - Bell and had them reprogram the entire computer. Now you can get a Holley or Fast XFI and its a whole lot better. Wasting money on a "Super Chip" is about as effective as a fart in a whirlwind.

I also have a manual 1985 c4, can you please make a video explaining the shifting/gear ratio and also explain the overdrive system. Mine never turns off and not sure what type of repair i need to do. It is always on in second gear and sometimes in 3rd. Thanks

There’s a guy here on KZfaq that rebuilds them and has a pretty good walk through on how the 4+3 overdrive works. Basically,if your going to build the motor to make any real hp swap that out for a 5 or a 6 speed. Otherwise,change the oil and the filter on a regular basis and don’t beat on it and it’ll last. It came about because of the smog regs. There really wasn’t a 6 speed manual back then and they were trying to keep the fuel milage up and that overdrive was developed to make that possible avoiding the tax issue. It’s a quirky relic. It is really kinda cool old school tech though.

My guess would the valves are sticky. There’s an oil pump in the overdrive unit that pressurizes the piston which puts pressure on the internal clutch plates and simultaneously releasing the pressure on another clutch pack to transition between the overdrive and direct drive. There’s a valve body with check balls that controls that. The switch is controlled by the ecm when conditions are met meaning there’s internal electrical connectors on that valve body as well that can degrade.

Put a stage three hypertech in that puppy with cold air and low temp thermostat a tad of octane boost..I will guarantee you it will change your opinion on chips.

I had mine programmed to bypass VATS and the fan to come on at 190. No performance gains at all. That was 14 years ago...I don't even remember who I bought it from...haha

you can get a chip that deletes VAT, EGR, and speed sensor. Deleting EGR is a nice way to remove junk and upgrade appearance under the hood

Is that an L98 motor? Without going into to much detail, I have a Formula 350 that was previously used as a students 1/4 track car in Beat the Heat. I was informed by vocational instructor that they installed a chip but that is all I got. I can tell you though that I have timesheets where it got mid 13's at over 100. Keep in mind they removed air,oil cooler. It's a modestly rare Formula 350 factree Fisher Body t-tops Maui Blue. Its a runner for sure !!!!

the ONLY thing you can do to get more power out of that stock L98 is to put a camshaft and heads in it for maybe 25% more horsepower trying to get 300 out of it... it is bolt in not bolt on but if you want power out of the L98 don't bother replace it. the L98 is a smog restricted low performance engine by design... i replaced mine with a 383 stroker 450hp/425tq fuel injected for under $6500 and it is worth every penny!

I've never, ever seen so much BS, but eh... because it's still architecturally the same as the older SBCs, you can modify it to your hearts content. Now, by the end of that you no longer have an 'L98', except insofar as the donor-block goes, but the point stands. if you can do it to a SBC, you can do it to any SBC until 96*, with varying levels of mechanical skill. *The LT1/LT4 did change some things with the switch to optispark timing, which probably would be beyond the scope of modifying 'away from'... Of course, the 'easy' way to make power is just throw forced induction on them, and the L98 came with forced induction as an option from the dealerships.... BEFORE the ZR1 existed. In the '80s, they were generating 400ish HP from Callaway. (BTW, the 800+ Hp forced induction L98 in the Sledgehammer wants to remind you, that they didn't have to stop at 400 HP, but chose to probably because of safety concerns at the time)

Two things I find this a bit scary, on my 87 I just don’t like Messing with 33 year old computers that are hard to replace. Not worth it “risk vs reward” As far as gains I think if the chip would have any noticeable affect it would be on an auto not a stock. I think the computer is more important on an auto.

Did you preform this step? After all components are reinstalled, start the car and let it idle for about 5 to 10 minutes; then shut it off. Restart the engine. The engine should be calibrated and ready for operation.

Tim, if you're sticking with the leaf springs there are lowering blocks for the front. Reasonably priced but more involved than the long back bolts

waste of money and time. The L98 will not produce more than stock HP/torque with a chip upgrade unless other expensive mods are done. for example a 58 mm throttle body which frankly is also a waste of time and money unless you're building andL98 that will make 350++ hp.

🪴The chip is a massive let down it worsens the power output notta nothing gianed. You gained less than you originally had no bs.The best investment and easiest is a tunnel ram intake manifold.If hard pressed to keep the runners remember the sledgehammer. It has a L98 and a tunnel ram instead of the long tube runners,sledgehammer yeah.A cam shaft & long tube headers anyone, Buller?Your going to do what you want no problem but for me go with the added power naturally aspirated see what the new dynamics of the car is what it's like to drive before you throw a ton of power at it.Also Royal Purple in the engine transmission and differential is supposed to give 30 hp dyno proven.🏁 Chip HP Minus -5 to -15 HP maybe a lot worse. Tunnel Ram Intake, 50hp to 60hp Plus higher speed when changing gears 6400 RPMs is nice and higher top speed. So a professional tune to take FULL advantage of the new Massive power increase and capabilities are endless. The Tunnel Ram intake is a serious power adder like Christmas day every day for a L98 5.7Liter350ci TPI Corvette owner.🌲
