We had to wake up at 4 in the morning for the shuttle to pick us up. It was just part of a bucket list thing to say you have cruised down the Panama Canal-and that is exactly what we did! It was an enjoyable day. Our driver picked us up at our hotel. Remember, they have to coordinate with the Panama Canal authority on a transit time and you have to remember to be flexible about the pickup. It’s a long hot day with an early start. And while some aspects seem to move at a snail’s pace, there is something so magical about the day that I was never bored.
The French were the first to attempt the construction of a modern Panama Canal crossing after their successful building of the Suez Canal in 1869, a flat crossing excavated through the sand. In contrast, the Panama Canal required excavation through the 110-meter mountainous spine of Central America consisting of rock. In addition, the Chagres River crosses the canal and flows strongly in the rainy season, making navigation difficult.
