It should be noted that the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa (and indeed, the rest of the Habsburg state) very strongly opposed the partitions, and in the end they only agreed to obtain a piece of land because the statesman Kaunitz saw that Poland-Lithuania was doomed anyway so the Austrians might as well take a piece. The Polish territory that Austria took, known as Galicia, was granted virtual autonomy within the Habsburg Empire, and at one point a group of Polish peasants even put down an attempt by some noblemen to restore the Commonwealth because the peasants preferred being under Habsburg rule (ironically, the Austrians ended up having to send an army into Galicia to keep the peasants from massacring the noblemen)
@JanuszKrysztofiak

Initially, none of the partitioning powers granted any autonomy to their parts of Poland-Lithuania (there was only some legal peculiarity in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where Russia kept some local regulations until the 1840s). Napoleonic wars introduced some changes. Napoleon recreated rump-Poland in the form of the Duchy of Warsaw in the personal union with Saxony. After the collapse of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna created three autonomous entities for Poles: the autonomous Duchy of Poznań in Prussian Poland, the (Congress) Kingdom of Poland (with its own government, military, constitution, parliament) in the Russian Poland, and the city-state of Kraków (the Republic of Kraków). Still no autonomy for the Austrian partition. However, neither Prussia nor Russia was serious about their autonomous parts of Poland: Prussia bit by bit reduced the autonomy of the Duchy of Poznań to nil, and the Russian tsar broke the Polish constitution on many occasions, eventually integrating it into the rest of the empire. Austria annexed Kraków. However, when the Empire of Austria suffered internal and external problems, it reformed itself into the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary, part of this process was granting autonomy to Austrian Poland (Galicja) in 1867. To summarize: Austria was the last power to grant autonomy to its Polish lands but the only one to keep its word.

It is questionable if their lives were trully better in fact it some cases it was worse because of military sercice which many if not most detested. That being said forcing the perasants to go into the ramy taught them loyalty to the Emperor which made any revolt much harder without the masses backing it up. In the case that you mentioned nobles were gonna recruit the peasants by promissing to abolish serfdom once the Commonwealth was restored. Unfortunately the Austrians caught wind of that aand spread lies that the Emperor himself was planning to abolish serfdom while the Polish uprising was fighting against it. Unfortunately the peasants believed it and turned on their own: "countrymen" murdering nobles and priests. It also did not help that back then a "Pole and Poland: was associated with nobles only and many peasants did not see themselves as Polish. This would only change with time as the new Inteligencia class was develiping. Since the Galician uprising the Austraians would continue using "divide and rule tactic" to make sure that no minority (especially the Poles) will gain too much power or influence in the region.

@MikeGreenwood51
@MikeGreenwood51 5 жыл бұрын
Madbrad200 True: 'State and Nation can be used interchangeable'. But only some times. The state is fixed. Or static. The nation is not. But the stae can be moved, increased or decreased. It is like a bee hive. IE the housing of the bees. The bees come and go from the state (hunter gatherer system) but the state stays till those bees return. But the state or the gatherer bees may be gone, half dessimated or on fire. So it is not immovable even though it was fixed. The state is a thing. Not alive. But then there are statesmen (women) who are not the state but political representatives for the state. They may be alive. So I do not agree with GdzieJestNemo that the state vanished. The state remained but was taken over and so parts of the Polish state vanished (1st partition) then later the entire Polish state was taken over.

Stop fighting in the comments. he says Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth in the beginning of the video. But I guess some Lithuanians here had only read title and didn't watch video. At the moment of uniting, Grand Duchy of Lithuania had bigger territory, but Poland had bigger population because of that Poland had more influence resulting in Lithuanian (including Ruthenians) nobility speaking polish and that is the reason why foreign people mistakenly call the whole thing just Poland.

I think that in the context of Europe at that time, the PL commonwealth, as some stated, is pretty much a 'US of E', with all kinds of people, thus religion, languages, etc. Fun fact the 1st amendment of US constitution (the religious freedom part) was actually mostly modeled after a post-medieval law granting religious tolerance (at the time where Catholics, Orthodoxies, Muslims, and the newly forming Protestants were fighting bloodily against each other). Also Prussia was originated as a Germanic (semi)autonomous state within the P-L commonwealth. (Which means, there's no modern Germany without the Commonwealth). The Polish (or Poles) as you mentioned, just happened to be the majority (or the Plurality, considering the Lithuanians and other Baltics) of the nobility class in the commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is a great historical example for why democracy (especially dominated by a single group) and diversity are not positive attributes of a state. Poland of that time was an ethnic, cultural and religious clusterfuck much like the US is now and was ruled by an elected monarch and noble assembly - which was still externally "modern" when contrasted with absolute monarchies such as the Russian Empire. @@Tk-mj1cl True in part; PLC pre-deluge was the height of tolerance for its time and post-deluge reversed course rather drastically. Pre-deluge "persecution of orthodox Christians" was an empty pretext used by the Russian Empire as a casus belli for a variety of wars with the Polish-Lithuanian union and later Commonwealth. The tsars failed to foment significant local support for any sort of 'liberation from persecution,' thus proving the pretext to be objectively false.

The Prussians were much more harsh and oppressive than the Austrians. That's why the Poles living in the territories given to Prussia revolted against Prussian rule, while the Poles living in areas given to Austria actually put down an attempt by some noblemen to revive the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (as Habsburg rule was very benevolent and much preferred to the ways of old) Also the whole reason Prussia became a great power in the first place was through 1. The Habsburgs granting numerous resources and rewards to the Hohenzollerns at the beginning of the eighteenth century and 2. Frederick the Great simply surprise-attacking and occupying neighboring states without being provoked, which was happened to Silesia at the beginning of the War of the Austrian Succession and Saxony at the beginning of the Seven Years' War. Meanwhile, Austria had respectfully and honestly built up its own great power status over hundreds of years by defending not only itself BUT ALL OF EUROPE from the menace of the Ottomans, who were the superpower of the day. So yeah, Prussia really was the bad guy all along :)

Okey, the liberum veto was ceremonial, it only became officialy a thing when Stanisław Poniatowski was crowned king of poland and grand duke of lithuania. And this was becouse he was a puppet of Екатэрина Вэликая (Cathrine the Great). Other countries did weaken the commonwealth internaly by bribes but not by paying for a veto but rather to vote on there candidate for the polish monarch. It was an elective monarchy and any nobleman from europe who was christian (i belive catholic) could try to become king. The commonwealth was weak becouse a line of terrible kings (most noteblly the Von Wettin dynasty) and an selfish and greedy szlachta (nobility). I am an polish historian and this hurts and the missinformation people belive and present is just sad. Also Poniatowski wasn’t the lover of Екатэрина, he was the Ex lover, in fact, he was afraid of her

I am of Polish descent and this is all very interesting to me. I recently read a quote from Adam Mickiewicz, the greatest Polish poet, who said, "And said Poland, whoever come to me, shall be free and equal, for I am freedom." This certainly shows the progressive nature of Poland and her people…

So basically Austria firstly fears growing Russian presence and at that time both ottomans and polish need the support of each other but Russia firstly defeated ottomans and then move towards this matter.
@radec1906

Because France removed the guarantee on the commonwealth. Also Brits and Swedes were not keen on helping former French protectorate. Also Poles had it coming for them since they helped Austrians backstabbing Ottomans which was their only possible ally who can physically help amongst the predators. Austria was always a threat Prussia wanted to grow east Russia wanted to grow west Guess what common enemy stands on their way. Then they did dirty on 1683 on Ottomans.

Once again a misleading title. The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was a equal union between Poland and Lithuania, it was not a Polish state, hence its partitions of Poland - Lithuania.... You also failed to mention how Grand duchy of Lithuania (eastern part of the commonwealth) had an alliance with Sweden for a short time period.

Prussia and it’s paritition mark is the reason why LGBT and liberalism has a voice in Poland. That’s why the poles hate liberalism as a foreign cultural hegemony. prussia is an enlightened country and despite being aggressive, it was very advanced and rational which opened the mind of liberal thinking. This is something many countries do whey they face the imperialist and advanced countries. They can’t stand the fact that the western invaders are just more advanced in mind because of the wealth they receive, and are making even their country more backwards to please emotional sentiments and history. It’s really pathetic.
