Parts of a Fortuna Skiving Machine:
This old 'leather skiver' (V50 S model) was cast aside in a shoemaker's shop, rusty and full of dust and spider's webs. I asked the owner if he wanted to sell it, and he said yes...although, abandoned in a corner, it was not so cheap the price for a used one...the shoemaker said it's a 'Fortuna skiver' and you are buying a forever machine.
We are still restoring it to come back to its former glory and as we could see in a former video, it now does a nice skiving work.
To know 'how to operate' this machine, the first step would be to 'recognize its parts and understand how this 'leather skiver' works...it is the purpose of this first video.
I hope you find it useful!
Cesar

Those grinding stones are made of soft grain to become dust avoiding the burning of the stone. That is why they do not last too much time.

@@Cechaflo My machine came with a blue stone installed (and spare white, orange, and pink stones), which seems too coarse to create an edge most suitable for skiving soft, thin leather down to 0.5mm-0.1mm. Would you say that a fine white stone is better suited to this task? When sharpening regular knives, working up to grits of 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 is going to give better results than just 600 grit. This is my thinking when deciding to go with a white stone.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 2 жыл бұрын
@@pequodexpress The white stone is recommended by some technicians and I agree. The deburring on the inside edge (just the edge)is very important to get a well sharpened knife.

@@Cechaflo I installed the white stone last night after watching your video for the twelfth time. Tomorrow, I will see if I notice improved results over the blue stone (going down to 0.5mm-0.1mm). There has to be a difference. I think too many people just stick with the stone that comes with their machine

Dear Cechaflo, Outstanding series video I had ever seen. I was confused about the relationship between bell knife feed stone and presser foot.I bought a second hand skiving machine without instructions. As a mechanic I know how every part works, but I don't know how to use. After learning this series video, I finally know how to adjust and use this machine. Thank you very much.

When grinding the bevel of the knife, should the grind go from right to left, top of the bevel toward the knife edge, or left to right, knife edge toward top of the bevel, or does it not matter? I am trying to determine if my bell knife and grinding stone are in the optimal position when sharpening. Sometimes the grind goes from right to left and other times it is left to right.

Dear cechaflo Thank you for sharing this tutorial video. I have checked many settings but keep having a problem. Maybe you have some advice? When skiving it feels like I have to pull the leather quite hard. This then blocks the feed roller and consequently the bellknife. This way I can produce only little lenghts like 2-3 cm skived leather, but I need to skive much longer lenghts to prepare parts for leather bags. What adjustments can I make?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Marjolein, Most of the times this issue happens when the 'bell knife' is not well sharpened. The roller has much to do because it feeds the material to be skived. Check if it is not stuck with some leather dust or so. Otherwise the roller is too low and its 'rasping surface' is not high enough to drag the leather material. The convex surface of 'feed roller' should be very close to concave internal surface of 'bell knife' . There is bolt in the back of left side of the machine that regulates the up and down position of 'feed roller'...it should be adjusted very close (less than 1mm) to 'bell knife' internal surface. Hopefully, you could adjust your skiving machine. You are welcome anytime!

dear César, I am a french leather lover and i was very happy about your videos. I have the exactly same skiving machine. I have bought it two years ago at a leather maker for a good price but, I had to discover how it works; so your video was welcome. The only point I have is the feed roller works alone, but when I put a piece of leather under the presser foot it stops so I can skive. Could you tell me if when you are using a 34 mm presser foot, you must use a 34 mm feed roller or can we use a 50 mm ? thanks again, Alain
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 жыл бұрын
In fact the 'feed roller' works independently while the 'bell knife' is constantly moving. If I press the pedal, then the clutch mechanism provides movement to the 'feed roller' to let the leather material against the 'bell knife'. As far as I now, feed rollers should come the same size(50 mm), what it could change is the preser foot, different sizes according to the job but not exceeding the 50 mm. Hope it helps. Cesar
@alainlefrancois1941
@alainlefrancois1941 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Cesar, thank you for your quick answer. In fact I suppose that the responsible is the transmission between the pedal and the mecanism which provides the movement to the feed rolller. I'm going to pay attention to this link. I have not other problem with this machine and have no regret about it. An other question if I can, do you use your skiving machine for slitting a piece of leather more than 50 mm without traces on the grain (vegetable tanned leather). Thank you again for all your help and kindness, sincerely yours, Alain.
@Cechaflo

Hello Alain, I have never worked with vegetable tanned leather...since I bought this machine I only have worked upholstery leather, and when for some reason I need to skive wider pieces I've realized of those traces/lines, but not so notorious.

Hello, i want to ask, i already turn the knob but my bell knife doesnot move, do you have any suggestion how to fix it?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, the same happened to me. In this video you will see I have adapted a 'small lever' to the 'bell knife knob'. I took off the knob, did a hole and made thread in it to insert a small bolt as lever: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nN6Pi9h6rcmzZWQ.html The problem is below with the 'long pitch screw' that gets stuck. You have to clean it with a brush and put new grease over. Use a 'curved locking pliers' to try moving the knob. Before putting the pliers put a piece of rag, leather, etc. over the knob to protect it. Move it back and forth and it will loose.

This problem happens when 'bell knife' is not properly sharpened. The 'grind stone' should be always dressed with 'dressing tool' before getting it closer to 'bell knife'. Perhaps, it is advisable to buy a new 'grind stone'. It is also advisable to always sharpen the inside edge of 'bell knife' with the 'ceramic stick'. @Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 жыл бұрын
+Picos Georgiana Please, check the current video from: min 10:12 to 10:17 . Sometimes, the 'thumb disk/button' to move the 'bell knife' gets tough to move it back and forth. The 'button' that moves the 'bell knife' provides a movement from the left to right sides and viceversa and it has an 'endless screw' that helps this action. At the beginning of min 10:12, I am moving the 'left button' that approachs and gets away the 'sanding stone' to the 'bell knife'...watch carefully, the two 'small hexagonal nuts' upper and lower position...loosen a little one of them...if too tight, it makes the 'bell knfe button' difficult to turn. I hope it helps...let us know what happened, perhaps the problem is other.

Ive come up with an issue on mine and was wondering if you might be able to help - I just replaced my bell knife on my skiving machine, Consew DCS-S4, and I now have a new 5mm of new length of blade to the left (towards the left). Thus, the blade currently sits about 5mm *past* the edge of the presser foot. This would not be an issue if I could bring the blade back by turning the knob, but unfortunately I turn it, it turns the perpendicular brass threaded shaft, but nothing else on the horizontal axis moves, so the blade doesn't shift from L/R. I was watching videos on maintenance/replacing blades, and one said the knob turned indefinitely. Mine does stop after a long amount of turns in either direction in case that matters. I've tried turning it to one of the ends OR the middle of the crank and installing the blade at those points, in case it has to be calibrated in some way, but that didn't work, so I didn't keep playing with this idea. Nothing I can see moves horizontally from the turning of the knob on the perpendicular axis. I know this machine used to be owned by someone who would skive THICK vegtan for sandals, I'm wondering if that might have done something to the components inside? Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Dear Sir, first of all, thank you so much for your videos, they are very helpful! Here is the issue i am having: When sharpening the blade my grinding stone is not touching FULL CONTACT with the blade bevel. I know this because when i mark the bevel with the black marker and try to sharpen - only part on the black mark residue (on the right side of the bevel) is being removed from the bevel, and there is still black marker residue left of the left (the sharpest) part of the bevel. Could you please advise how to fix this? thank you very much!
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for delay, I've been trying to figure out what would be the issue. Hopefully, this video is useful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i-BdrLRmsNOwYpc.html I am thinking that it is possible the bell knife edge is slightly far away from the presser foot right edge. You would need to get it closer as shown in the video link line above. That is why the grinding stone only touches the very edge and not embraces more sharpening area. Another issue could be the grinding stone is worn off/too small, consequently it does not reach the due edge area to do the complete sharpening. The solution is a new grinding stone. I hope it helps.

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
There are two thin bronze plates on both sides of the bar that holds the presser foot. If some dirt or goo is accumulated it does not let a freely up and down movement. Clean this area with thinner or gasoline then lubricate it with oil. If the problem persists you have to disassemble the parts that house the spring to check what is happening. Sorry, I cannot help more.

Cechaflo hmmm. Thanks for your informative response. I took off the lever and I believe I don't have a spring . I've been suspecting it was lost. I found no spring under the lever and I assume there must be one unless it's more internal than just under the tensioner/lever assembly. Does yours have a spring that is able to be removed after taking the top lever off? Thanks
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
By removing two little bolts to take off the lever part I have realized there is a 'hollow piston' inside which houses a 5 cm long spring. The 'lever' moves this piston downwards. If you leave it it recuperates its position. I also suppose the spring is missing. We know it is important to make the lever and presser feet remain in upper position.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I overlooked something else:The spring is not visible at first sight. It is inside the hollow piston and pressed down with a threaded cap you have to unscrew it with a flat screwdriver.
@shanedresser5431
@shanedresser5431 6 жыл бұрын
perfect. I will try and find a spring that works but to know that it is 5cm is a great place to start. if you could perhaps send a picture of one that would be of great help. I did take the flat screw out that is in the front. I heard a sound of the piston releasing and thought "uh oh!" I can't seem to get it back in. I can manually lift the presser foot to the top and slowly use the lever to bring it back down as I use the bolt to try and find the hole that it seats in but I think it may have rotated perhaps and won't allow me to get that seated again.

Which areas do you lubricate and grease?
@Cechaflo

Grease on ears, hidden adjustment bolts and joints. Oil lubrication on some nuts, bolts, and hidden bearings.

Hi. I need help removing the belt from the motor. I can't move it toward the machine
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
What you have to do is overlap a little the 'rubber belt' over the 'motor pulley' while turning the upper pulley of the machine in one direction. It needs some little force to make the 'machine upper pulley' rotate.
@KK-gc2md
@KK-gc2md 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have the same pulley like yours on the upper part that also makes it difficult, the only possible access is the motor part, which is in my case. I tried overlapping in, but keeps on slipping back.

I'm trying to change the belt that connects to the grinder, i've tried my best but I can't do it, it seems like the belt that is in the motor is pretty tight.

I know this vid was posted several years again you mentioned "We are still restoring it to come back to its former glory and as we could see in a former video" where is this video? I just bought an older Fortuna Model 10. Your restoration came out beautifully. Fwiw. :) -Sam

Hello Sam, there was an old related video where the machine appears before restoring process. Unfortunately, it was deleted and lost, sorry. What my son and I did to the machine was the replacement of many missing parts from other similar useless machine there was in a junk yard. The original motor was a three-phase one we replaced for a new single phase one. The table was thoroughly leather covered and painted. An original bearing was changed and still need to change the vacuum pump bearing.The machine was painted to the color that appears on the video. A fixed lamp was added. The 'suction/vacuum mechanism for leather dust and scraps' was fixed and activated too.

Suction/Vacuum? hmm I didnt know such a feature existed. My Fortuna looks very much like yours. I'll have to take a vid and post. I intend on restoring it very much like it was when new. I think my Skiver is much older than yours though. fwiw Some of my work can be seen here. www.trickinteriors.com. Im semi- retired now and only take on a few jobs a year. right now im recovering a dash/console in a Ferrari. 575 Which is what led me to getting a Skiver. you are truly an asset to the community. Thaks for all the uploads and time taken! Meant to add my skiver is missing the belt drive cover. Ill need to build one I suppose. it does not look like a part thats easily sourced.

It is so nice to hear you are also a passionate for this beautiful and lucrative art! No much images, but the picture on right side shows a thick plastic suction tube which goes under the table and goes to left side of the machine to unload in a close basket 'leather dust/wastage': www.sieck.de/en/machines/skiving/leather-goods-and-automotive-interieur/details/1381/

Hello Dear Sir! I would be interested in the characteristics of the engine, Whati, rpm, Volts? In min 4:36, you can give more details, images related to the independent clutch drive for the feed roller.the mechanism itself, please! I have a Fortuna RDG that does not have an independent roller feed mechanism, some images would certainly help me to design one.

Dear Marius, The motor I adapted for this machine is a Siemens trade mark, 1740 RPM, 1/2 HP, for a current of 120 volts. Fortunately this machine came with a clutch mechanism that makes it self-dependent. Later on I will post some pictures on this comment section to show the clutch mechanism.
