Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for Party Time & Nalia de'Arnise from Battle for Balur's Gate #MTG #commander #edh
The rogue companion for Baldur's Gate 2 Nalia de'Arnise joins us in the latest precon upgrade guide for Battle for Balur's Gate, eager to put together a party of powerful adventurers and and complete any quest that come her way.
In this build, we'll be aiming to get as much value out of Nalia's ability as we possible can, maximizing the card advantage she provides by allowing us to cast party members off the top of our deck and keeping that party together to grow bigger for as long as possible. That of course means we'll be running a full adventurers guild worth of party members in our build, turning our topdeck into a second hand we can reliable play from to assemble a full party. And once that party is assembled, we'll have plenty of ways to protect and reanimate our party members so that they can continue to grow turn after turn thanks to our commander. And if left unchecked, Nalia and the rest of the party will be able to turn in their defeat 3 planeswalkers quest with no issue.

Hi Grazzet, I have followed your upgrade guide, and a few others, and I am trying to finish out the changes to my deck. I have all your upgrades, plus drannith magistrate, dark confidant and weathered wayfarer, and I also have liliana, heretical healer, dogged detective, and taborax, hope's demise, and im trying to figure out where to integrate them in this deck/what to replace them with. I was thinking of replacing felisa and rumor gatherer with Drannith and Dark Confidant - thoughts? Cant figure out where to put the others though Cheers, Rhys

my friend is thinking getting into MTG EDH, this deck is perfect for his personality, hes a DM in out DND sessions and is really good at it, having classes and a commander thats supports it really speaks DM deck! great video for upgrades :) ! as always!

Always nice getting new EDH players! Can also recommend the Sefris of the Hidden Ways precon that came out with the previous D&D set. A really fun and flavorful deck, and the Dungeon mechanic got even more help in the recent new sets with The Initiative here and Connive from New Capenna.

I just picked this one up as my first deck ever. Played a few times and both times the Butcher of Malakir came out he was absolutely pivotal to protect my party.

Thanks so much for making this video dude! I only play with a particular friend and sometimes two other friends. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do this research on my own so this is super cool. Both of my main opponent's decks are all about pulling creatures from graveyards so this will definitely give me the upper hand. Let me know if you have any recommendations on dealing specifically with the other Baldur's Gate deck Mind Flayarrrs or a zombie based deck with lots of tokens. Lol we have a very strong rivalry going. The inflection in your voice is good. Don't listen to that knuckle dragging mouth breather.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the build, especially if its saving you some time to game with your friends! This build is actually solid against Mind Flayers since we have a lot of small creatures that don't give them much value so they will not likely not target us with mill (at least not directly) - and even if they do we can reanimate our creatures to assemble our party even easier. Tokens is harder, but we should be able to outmuscle them after a few turns thanks to our commanders growth, but adding a finisher like Akroma's Will or Sigarda's Summons may be useful to evade them entirely to go for lethal instead of having to go through them. And yeah, some folks don't like my voice or inflection but I understand its a personal thing. But hey, 5k+ folks seem to like it so I must be doing something right!

I've recently played against this deck and it only had party assembled for one round. So this strategy definitely needs ways to protect its board

Yeah, this deck needs to keep the party intact to function, which is why I dedicated a good chunk of the build to keeping our party intact for as long as possible, or at least reanimate our party members failing that.

I feel like the alternate commander with background is a better fit for the deck, at least more powerful.

Great video, thanks a lot! I recently played a few games with the upgraded deck, my early and midgame were overwhelmingly dominant. But i never achieved to win the game, because i got overpowered every time. It feels like the party is too weak to fully dominate and too fragile to rebuild it if it gets defeated. Do you have any tips for those issues? Keep up the amazing work!

I'm new to MTG, I tried a few different precon, etc. I have to say that since I played this deck with those upgrade it's probably one of my favorite!! I love the mechanic a lot of creature they are all adding/helping to the party, etc Awesome Video Thank you!! :D Would you have time to take a look at Anowon, the Ruin Thief Precon? Truly, party rock was in the house tonight. Amazing build as always! As for who's next... Minsc and Boo, perhaps? I honestly have no idea. Day 304 of waiting for Grazzet's face reveal. I wonder if there will be an option to buy you a tea instead of coffee...

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the support as always! The planeswalker commander in this set are all fun build arounds, so I certainly would have no issues throwing Minsc and Boo along with some of the other walker commanders into the mix in a future poll. And maybe tea is a good idea - or decaf at least since I went a but faster than normal in this video in places....

Thanks for the video. Got one question about the Seasoned Dungeoneer specifically about protection. Does it need to have the party on the bttlefield to apply or does it apply to any Warrior,wizard, cleric and rogue attacking?

Seasoned Dungeoneer doesn't need a full party, just one party member.

Glad to hear you've been enjoying the content! Party is a interesting take on tribal in my opinion. It incentives running multiple creature types over one which is interesting but can be frustrating if you don't draw into what you need to make it work - incentivizing us to run more creatures or tutors to bring them up. Overall, I do find it fun and would recommend it if you want a slightly more difficult to run tribal deck to test out. Hope that helps!

Have you thought about Oona's Blackguard even if it is a rogue ? Destroying people hand for 2 mana and synergize with the +1/+1 counter theme ? Another solid rogue that fill a Recursion + Card Selection could be Body Launderer ? Solid Upgrades besides that Arashin Foremost is kinda cool giving Double Strike to a Warrior that could accelerate the clock Have you thought about Oketra Monument for the Warrior token and reduction on mana tokens ? or you are too low on white creature for it ? EDIT : Abzan Battlepriest seems hella sweet for that sweet lifelink too

Tested with Oona's Blackguard and other rogues and came to a conclusion on them - while some of them are powerful, they are nonbo's with our commander since they don't actually help us get a full party since our commander is already a rogue - so while I can see the argument in adding them for their abilities, you'll be sacrificing consistency in assembling a full party to get our commanders last ability online - and that up to the player to decide if that's a good tradeoff. Arashin Foremost would certainly make a good inclusion to that works well to take advantage of our commander offensive Deathstrike and Oketra's Monument would be a good include since our deck is about 65% white and the warrior tokens are certainly useful to grow with our commander - Good suggestions!

@@GrazzetMTG Hmm. I could see that I added Morbid Opportunist but you now make me reconsider it. I never thought about this. I will still add some of Dauthi Voidwalker/Opposition Agent (I already have them in my collection and they are too good to pass on) and probably Varragoth because top Tutoring on attack seems insane for the deck. Will probably keep Body Launderer because of the recursion but you made reconsider it for sure. Unsure about the Iregular Cohort cut , because it gives 2 new party members. I know it doesnt have any effect so maybe it does make sense to cut it

I just picked up this deck and I'm looking trough videos for ideas. I found this one very informative and well done. I'm going to try and take it down a lifegain road with Vito and other effects and see what happens in addition to the normal gameplan. Feels like one really wants to lower the curve, keep the creatures alive, get them back, and keep the pressure up and have some kind of alternative win con. If only I had something that gave them all flash or haste.

Cathar’s Crusade and Sigarda’s Summons for a little with the counters and they can help close games.

Good suggestions! Cathar's Crusade can certainly help get even more counter's onto our party members (and at $5 its not too hard to add in) and Sigarda’s Summons is both a means to grant our counter laden creature a decent stat bump (usually) and mass evasion, which is great to enable alpha strikes.

Okay I own this deck and I guess I don’t understand something about the commander. Yes she puts +1/1 counters on the party and gives them deathtouch till end of turn. Are the +1/1 counters permanent? Or do they go away at the end of turn like the deathtouch does?

Yep, the +1/+1 counters are permanent but the deathtouch only lasts until end of turn.
