Just to interject about Nimona: I also think she’s one of the best rivals we’ve ever had, because she shows the other side of motivation and drive-we see burn out. She starts the game feeling like she’s plateaued, and that she doesn’t really know what to do with herself. As someone who was going through immense career and creative burn out when these games came out, I just saw myself in Nimona. She’d pushed herself above and beyond, she’d become a champion and she was the best student-but what did she really want? The fact that she goes on a journey with you to rediscover what excites her made me really connect with her and made her one of my favorite recent pokemon characters. When she eventually discovers that what makes her happy and motivates her is simply being with her friends-ugh, I still get a little teary thinking about it. Such a great message.

About the Starfall story. The backstory is that the executives of Team Star used to be bullied by some nameless students we don't see, with some teachers being involved that got fired. The team was formed when these bullied kids got together and decided to get back at their bullies. That's just the backstory, what's relevant to the present is that since then they've had a bad reputation with the school because the students and teachers ended up dropping out and no one knew what was happening to Team Star behind the scenes. To wrap up their plan and remove their bad rep, Penny planned to take all the blame and drop out, which is why the executives all refuse to go to school, along with their followers. They're saying they won't go to school unless they're all together. No one knows what's going on, so the principal goes undercover as "Clive" to investigate and ends up learning what really happened and takes care of things so none of them get in trouble for the bullies and teachers that were involved. Penny's goal was to get you to force Team Star to disband by taking their badges, granting you authority over them per their own rules, and make them go back to school while she takes the blame and disappears

I personally would have enjoyed the story of Team star more if they moved some--hell maybe even ALL--of the details from the DLCs into the main game. I mean, there is literally a side quest you can do after completing the Indigo disk story where you tutor some of the team star kids which adds a bunch of personality to each member. I think Teal mask also had team star story beats in it somewhere, but i literally never cared about their story enough to pay attention so i've easily forgotten if there even is any in teal mask since its been so long since i finished that dlc. Iirc, we dont see literally any of the gym leaders in either dlc, but at multiple points post campaign in each dlc, you get the option to go back and talk to team star members to learn more about their past. This could have been put into the main game and the team star story would have been better. Not really a LOT better since you'd have to go thru the whole main game story to learn about ANY of this, but locking the COMPLETE TEAM STAR STORY behind dlc is...............pathetic, and just such a let down.

honestly the gym leaders are some of my favs in the series! I think all of their designs are really fun and unique with lots of neat details. I love that they all really have professions outside of the pokemon league, like being a gym leader is kind of a side hustle. it just makes a lot of them feel more important to the culture of the region in different individual ways, which is why I think they are so memorable to me personally

I wanted the gyms in gen 9 to have gym uniforms like they did in SwSh because those designs were amazing. The gym trainer npcs from pokemon SwSh are also significantly better. They all have amazing and unique designs that even fit the types of the gyms they're part of. But the ones in gen 9 are just the same generic npcs that you find through the entire region.
@MagillanicaLouM
@MagillanicaLouM 2 ай бұрын
My thing about the side profession thing is, why is it so praised when it's far from the only region with this aspect? I don't even think it's the first region where ALL of the gym leaders have this trait. It's not like we actually SEE them do their non gym leader jobs in any more detail than usual either. It's always enjoyable but when i see brought up to prop up Paldea and these games like its a unique thing to gen 9 when its been happening since 1996, it always feels like folks ignoring previous stuff to try and find something positive about ScVi specifically.
@aliteralcrouton4876
@aliteralcrouton4876 2 ай бұрын
@MagillanicaLouM I never said it was unique to this gen, but I do feel like it's done particularly well here. maybe it's just cuz the character designs are especially strong, or the crowd that forms to watch your battles. just trying to think about why they felt especially memorable to me outside of just visual designs. I have plenty of criticisms for s/v but this is just something I personally thought was done well, im not trying to say it's the first gen to do gym leaders right or anything. I do think there should be more interaction with them outside of battle though, and the little gym trials all felt very trivial and lame to me. while I think SV have plenty of flaws, the human character designs in general are a big strength imo.
@MagillanicaLouM
@MagillanicaLouM 2 ай бұрын
@@aliteralcrouton4876 yeah I was more speaking generally, I've seen a few comments before praising the gym leaders and this game's characters in general as a step up when they aren't doing anything that wasnt done before or even better in the series imo. However, for you specifically, i can see why the atmosphere of battles and the designs help in making them stick out lol. About the character DESIGNS in particular, I can definitely agree. Series rarely ever misses on that front, and while I don't think Paldea's cast as a whole are among my favorites, there are definitely individual characters that are, both human and pokemon. Even without Sugimori in this one, there's some good stuff going here.

Yeah and there's actually a lot of lore about Eternatus in the game if you actually pay attention to the story. Literally every town and city in the region had some kind of connection to the legend of Galar (except for ballonlea for the whole hidden fairy town aesthetic and spikemuth for being the town that doesn't relate to dynamax). Eternatus fell like a meteor on Galar (the other probably in the place where the dynamax adventures take place in current times) and forced Calyrex to teleport an entire forest to save the pokemon living there (the same forest that is now near the house of the player and that was probably what was there instead of the dynamax adventures place). Turning pokemon into giants while flying through the region (passing through the crown tundra and some of the islands near the Isle of armor). While passing through Hulbury it ended up causing the existence of the first gmax pokemon (gmax toxtricity) that saved hulbury from the attack and that it was so big that people from Milo's town were able to see it happen (and thus, created the geoglypht). Around the same time, Regigigas, that was roaming around Galar (that's why there's so many places called "Giant's something" in the region) saw the first darkest day as a giant "storm" of dynamax energy (which is dragon type energy) which was very likely what inspired regigigas for the creation of regieleki (electric type regi inspired by the "storm") and regidrago (made literally from the draconic energy left in the process). Then the ancestors of Swordward and Shieldbert (that witnessed Eternatus arrival on Galar) were the ones that found the shrine with the ancient relics necessary to summon Zacian and Zamazenta (after Calyrex teleported the entire forest to mainland Galar) and they used them to summon both of them. And thus, Calyrex and Kubfu/Urshifu (the fairy king and the fighting master) made a team with Zacian and Zamazenta (the hero duo) to defeat Eternatus and after defeating it, this made Eternatus scatter wishing stars through the entire region. This fight was so intense that Calyrex ended up super injured and was rescued by the people of the crown tundra that healed him up. And even then Calyrex was still so traumatized from the fight that he couldn't see people with an opened hand because it reminded him of Eternatus. And Zacian and Zamazenta got so hurt that they needed to go to the (currently called) "Hero's bath" in Circhester to heal their wounds before going back to their shrine. Because of this, the people of Galar attributed the entire victory to the ancestors of Swordward and Shieldbert (creating the ancient tapestries to remember the real legend) but the events of legend eventually got so mixed up with the pass of the centuries that people ended up believing that it was just a single human hero with a sword and a shield who saved the day back then. Eternatus fell into what currently are one of the Galar mines owned by Rose and was discovered by him eventually, taking it to hammerlock to (eventually) start his plan. It's very likely that Eternatus arrival 3000 years ago caused several (permanent) mutations to pokemon and plants while flying through the region due to overexposure to its energy. Like Calyrex's blue aura, the giant tree from the crown tundra, the galarian legendary birds (that I personally think that are three flying type pokemon mutated by Eternatus energy) and the tree where you can currently find the max honey in the isle of armor and the max mushrooms that you can find through the entire (main) island as well. Also, all the Galar legendaries (including Eternatus) are inspired by an entire set of constellations that are very close to each other. Which is pretty cool: Lepus the hare (Calyrex), Orion the hunter who wields a sword and a shield (which was a giant, hence the inspiration for the dynamax/gmax phenomenon and the name of the games), The spectral horse head nebula (spectrier), Monoceros the unicorn (glastrier), Canis major and canis minor (zacian and zamazenta), which are right next to the hydra constellation (Eternatus), with this one being the largest of the western constellations (just like Eternatus is the largest of all pokemon). And the hydra from such constellation is said to have poisonous blood and a dragon breath. Which are the two types of Eternatus. This group of constellations is also next to gemini (the identical twins: the two forms of urshifu) and such constellation lies across the border between two quadrants: the tiger quadrant and the vermilion bird/crane quadrant, which just happens to be the real world fighting styles that inspired the fighting styles for both forms of Urshifu. Sorry for the ridiculously long comment. I tend to write a lot sometimes XD.

As someone who enjoyed these games a bit more than most people, all of your points are great and fair. No real complaints on my end. However, there is one part of the game that pretty much everyone I've talked to has skipped out on and that's the actual classes in the game. They're not all that helpful in terms of getting you items and the gameplay is very simple and not very dependent on Pokemon, but I had a good time with it. I agree with you that a lot of the non-rival characters were lacking, but whenever I wanted to interact with some interesting characters I'd go and take a class. Most of the teachers are a lot of fun and some of my favorite characters in the game. It really helped me to feel more connected to Paldea because a lot of the fun character moments were purposeful and seemingly hidden. I don't think it'd save the game if you went and played it now, but because I played it on my first playthrough of the game, I enjoyed the game quite a bit.

Region and city environments have gradually gotten worse since pokemon made the jump to 3D. Sun and Moon was where I first noticed the decline in town and route quality, as many towns are just unremarkable and routes started becoming a lot more simplified. Sw/sh took it further and basically didn’t even make an attempt to design routes in some cases and having towns with even less to do. S/v went the furthest, with almost completely empty towns in some cases without any standout visual design that sw/sh even maintained

Great video! An easy improvement to the level scaling issue is to just put a recommend level tag on all gyms/titans/team star encounters. It’s not a perfect fix but at least you’ll know what you’re getting into. I’m not a fan of these games overall, but I understand what they were going for. While there are three paths, you’re still gated by your gym progress because Pokémon obedience is still tied to the gyms you have. I loved Arven and the titans but I would’ve liked to see more of a hunt to find the titans by looking for clues or talking to eyewitnesses and putting the story together. I’m more excited for the new Legends game but I hope the mainline series improves in the next iteration.

I know people have some problems with S/V.. but personally, as someone who has been playing Pokemon since gen 1.. I LOVE them!! I think they're by FAR the most fun Pokemon has ever been, like EVER. Being able to properly interact and feel like friends with your Pokemon is a game changer for me, and never in my life have I ever even attempted to attempt completing my Dex or shiny hunting.. but in S/V? Filling out the Dex was really fun! and I've done it multiple times on multiple playthroughs, and shiny hunting? Again literally the first game ever where I've had even a slight interest in shiny hunting and me and my wife love shiny hunting together. Then there's the visuals, which I know are definitely not perfect as far as the distant mountains and stuff, but the Pokemon themselves look way better than they ever have (minus Pokken) and being able to freely move/look around, scout out Pokemon and freely have your Pokemon by your side for multiple reasons other than just cosmetic is SO fun and adds so many layers that none of the older games have. Then the syncro mode too!?! SO much fun! The story I'm not going to say is perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but again I actually kinda felt a little attached some some of the characters in S/V, which I cannot say for any other Pokemon game ever. Not sure if it's because being able to see them express themselves much more fluently is the reason? Maybe, but still. My whole life in any Pokemon game I've never felt interested in the plot or characters at all, this one I'm not TOO interested, but I like them. Seriously, I will always have a strong attachment to the Gen 3 games specifically... but I kinda see myself struggling to want to go back to any of the older games now that the new ones have gotten this entertaining.

S/V imo are the best "Mainline" games in awhile, the problem is they seem not finished, are buggy and also not optimized for the Switch at all. Thus the overall experience can leave a bad taste in peoples mouth. Compare the Wild Area offline to just how slow running around in S/V's open world is. Why did character customization again have 2 steps forward 2 steps back you can actual do so much in regards to actual customization but then on the clothes front it runs so badly and so many of the choices are so lackluster that most people will at most spend 5 minutes attempting it and never touch it again. The online functionality just keeps on getting worse and worse since Generation 6. I get that it is "side game" but why were the items to allowed you to evolve trade evolutions with items from PLA not included for that matter why not include the shiny jingle and animation that PLA also had. Instead we get a "school" system that seems there just for padding another picnic/camp system that most players probably wont touch unless they are going to breed since the day/care has been removed. Actual stores have been removed to effectively just be interfaces which is slow when dealing with customization aspects, and also removes some of the "Life" of the world since they all blend into the background. I am sure there is more stuff, but I think I made my point, the core gameplay is probably the strongest it has been in awhile, I personally just played Gen 9 for the second time where as no games since Gen 4 have I wanted to play through multiple times, the problems are everything else which are really starting to become bigger and bigger.

I do get a lot of backlash for it, but I did really enjoy Scarlet and Violet. A lot of performance issues to look past of course but some of the new Pokémon introduced have been my favorite designs in a while. I love the paradox Pokémon, as I did the Ultra Beasts in gen 7, and Gholdengo has been my boy since day 1 and is my favorite gen 9 Pokémon! Tera is by far the best gimmick, yes even better than Megas. As a competitive player, it's not too broken like Dyanamax was but still extremely impactful in a battle. It's perfect and I hope they don’t move away from it for a while. Lastly, I had a lot of fun overall with the gameplay, characters (except Kieran), and ESPECIALLY the music!

Despite all the flaws (especially the towns and cities) I still love these games. I think they have at least the second best story and the best characters. I love how they make it clear that being a Gym Leader is a job and even tackle the struggles that come with it. Katy being one of the first Gym Leaders due to how close she is to Mezagoza, hates this because she loves giving her all in battle and can’t since she goes against newbie trainers. Or Grusha who is relying on being a Gym Leader as a source of income since he hurt himself and can’t professionally snowboard anymore. This means he has to perform perfectly as the final gym leader at risk of being demoted or fired. Most of the characters whether they be gym leaders, rivals, teachers, etc. feel connected through little interactions like Brassius appearing in Hassal’s art class at the academy and it being revealed that they are close friends.

I agree with you on a lot of points. One thing I do have to say is that my experience with the bugs/glitches/unplayability is not that bad. Yes, my games have crashed on multiple occasions, and the lag is real in some places, but working around those issues wasn't too hard. Save a little more often (which you had to do in the older games anyway) and avoiding going to the worst laggy places helped a lot. I never really found it unplayable. The biggest issue I have with it, is that most issues were avoidable while making the game, they made mistakes in coding they never should've. I really hope they're learning from that. And, I actually like the shiny hunting mechanics like this. Having to do my best to distinguish the shinies, has been pretty fun for me.

Honestly, I love SV. Maybe its the fact that I played it in a super slow and tedious way, but I didn't have the issues some people did with the difficulty. Every fight was a challenge for me to overcome and I loved it. I also didn't run into too many performance issues or glitches. I saw early on that the lag and glitchiness got worse the longer the game ran, so I made sure to completely exit out every time I stopped and that avoided most of it. There were a few areas where I still hit lag spikes (that bamboo forest was hell), but overall things ran at around 80% smoothness. The story, music, and designs are really what does it for me, though. SV and Arceus were the only recent Pokemon games where I wanted to start right up again the second I finished it. In Arceus's case, I just ended up doing a lot of Pokedex completion, but in SV I started up a new game in Violet immediately (I started in Scarlet) to get all the version exclusives. And when my partner got back into it, I started up another new file to play alongside him, with zero regrets. I definitely can't say the same for any other generation, especially not 7 and 8. I do hope they'll work on the performance issues a lot more in ZA. It's one of the biggest marks against the game, and I think if they can fix that they can make an amazing product.

The performance, yes, i agree, can be really bad, but aside from some pretty heavy eye rolling, it didn't bother me much. I had a lot of fun with the catching, story, trading with community, and the blue berry quests. I've recently started a new playthrough on a second profile, and i am planning on completing the full dex again. I haven't completed the dex in a pokemon game since the 2nd generation, except for legends arkoos and shining pearl, so the fact that i'm planning on doing it again should tell you a lot about how much i enjoyed catching and collecting in this game. I don't think i'm physically able of going back to a pokemon game with random encounters... So in short, despite the issues, i loved it. But please nintendo, for the next installments, don't rush. My opinion on SV boils down to “passable”. I was so mind blown that people were defending this game for how problematic the performance is, because while yes, I did play this game for hours, it was kinda miserable at times and yes it’s embarrassing for the point this series is at right now. Tera Raids I gave up on after Walking Wake and Iron Leaves because Tera Raids are insufferably bad. Every experience I had with those were miserable. The story was good especially the Arven route and endgame stuff. Towns are forgettable and doesn’t help I can only think of 3 town names off the top of my head. The new mons were good overall, and shiny hunting in this game was a guilty pleasure despite performance issues. I just hate this idea people have that if you criticize the game in anyway, you hate the game or series. Yes some people overemphasize the issues but I think that stems from how big a series like Pokemon is and how much is behind it and yet this is the new best selling game from a massively successful franchise that would probably be a 5/10 if it were any other series without the prestige Pokemon has. I really hope future games get the time they need to be great.

Still wouldn’t call these games story better than Black and White’s two solid stories but I will have to admit the story is pretty good. For Pokémon lol Edit: Also- People have to realize, just because this may be your first Pokémon game, or maybe you dont have nostalgia for the pre 3d games, doesn’t make what people say about Scarlett and Violet any less true. You can enjoy the game, and even feel it’s good, but it just.. It’s far from the best Pokémon game. And comparing it to Black and White, or even Heart Gold and Soul Silver, heck- other open world games shows that even more.

Warning, hella long comment incoming with lots of opinions and nothing that hasn’t been said before! First of all, I hope this is the start of your video essay era! I thought you brought up some interesting points and I’d love to hear your take on other games in the series. Overall, really enjoyed the video, though I don’t agree with certain points. I just want to start off by saying, that I’m a huge fan of these games. They felt really magical to me and made me feel really immersed in the world of Pokemon. But I do agree that a lot of points made about the issues with environment, gameplay, and lack of memorable towns and unique musical themes outside of characters and battles. However, I think the games shined with the characters, storyline, and new Pokemon introduced. If I had to choose a theme for SV, it would be subverting expectations. Nemona seems like a boring bad and basic rival who praises you for knowing type combinations, but she’s actually a skilled champion trainer who nerfs herself to follow a growing rival so she can finally feel challenged. Team Star seem like mindless bullies but they’re actually a group of outcasts who banded together to stop real bullies. Arven seems like a jerk at first but he’s actually a lonely kid trying to save his dog. Like you mentioned, even the professor and the legendary swap roles! In the DLC, Carmine seems like she hates us, but she ends up being a loyal friend. Kieran seems like a shy kid who bravely understands Ogerpon, but he actually acts like a jerk for a good chunk of the story. I also completely agree that Area Zero and “The Way Home” are some of the best things Pokemon has done in years. That whole section is mysterious and exciting. One major part I disagreed with, is some of your comparisons to SWSH. Personally, for me SWSH are the games that felt empty and forgettable. I much preferred the wild areas and gyms and feel of SV, though that may just boil down to personal taste. It’s also hard to relate to the section about glitches and bugs, I didn’t encounter too many of those and while the graphics need improvement, it didn’t ruin the game for me. Personally, I find it a bit dramatic to say the games or unplayable or inexcusable due to that. The good outweighs the bad for me. At the end of the day, I simply had fun playing these games and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. And it’s totally fine if people dislike or downright hate them. I just hope that some of y’all are a little nicer to those of us that enjoyed them. I think SV are flawed games that also did a lot right and I too remain hopeful about the future of the series

Maybe that was because I played them during the pandemic and was worried about other things at the time, dunno. I played through the main game and both DLCs with my partner using the Union Circle mode. Playing through in the same world with someone is something I've wanted in a Pokemon Game since I was playing with my friends in Elementary School almost 20 years ago. We got to explore a new region together and experience the story at the same time. Funny enough, the visual bugs added some fun and laughs as well. Finally seeing such a simple thing be added has made Scarlet and Violet some of my favorite Pokemon games of all time. It's a shame so many people dropped it, but I think I'll hold the memories of playing this game a lot closer now. I hope they continue this feature in every game going forward!

I feel like GF doesn't get why a lot of people liked Team Skull. They were thugs, but they were goofy, you could see them being a problem for other people, but you could handle them, and they had the best team leader ever (IT'S YA BOI). But they weren't the only "evil" team in Sun and Moon, where the Aether Foundation were more serious and threatening initially. So you had the balance and the believability. The evil teams since Skull have all been down grades, Yell and Star are just pests. Yell actually just annoys people and that's all, and Star is "oh no it's team Star!... wut do they do?"

With all the lag, glitches, and with just how broken the game is in all I can still say that the story is the one thing that I actually was really invested in. That was the main reason why I wanted to finish out the entirety of Pokemon Scarlet. It was truly an experience that I would not have expected with a game that is broken like this. The characters were also fun to interact with, and it's interesting to look at what theories other people have on the lore of Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, especially with the crystal lake scene. Overall, I still put up a lot of hours into the game because I like shiny hunting, but the game is still pretty bad on some levels. I don't think it was bad enough for me to not enjoy the good parts of the game though.

I picked up Pokemon Scarlet last year after I had surgery and decided I needed something to do whilst recovering. Initially held off as I got Shield during lockdown years ago but found myself really disappointed and regretted it. Surprisingly though I found Scarlet to be a lot of fun. I think Pokemon as a formula and franchise will always be enjoyable to some degree, and Legends was a much better "breath of fresh air" for the franchise - but I still was pleasantly surprised by Gen 9 despite the performance issues etc. as it exceeded my expectations in a way? Most of the reasoning was Arven, I found his storyline in particular to be effective at getting you emotionally invested. I feel like it perfectly walked the line of being something kids can enjoy and take in, and something adults can - whereas Starfall didn't really excel at doing that. The gyms I also agree, really needed level scaling. Previous games have done level scaling so there's really no excuse for not scaling it to gym badge count at least, but I actually kind of like that some wild Pokemon can obliterate your team in the early if you run into them (might be because I'm a Xenoblade fan) and the new Pokemon were awesome. Garganacl and Skeledirge became my best friends tbh As for Pokemon's future, I really hope we see it move towards having a little bit more edge or mature topics and less stuff like Starfall. More things like the reveal of the what happened to the Professor and Gen V's storylines, it hits harder when it's well-written yet present in a "kids game". Honestly I'd love something along the vibe of Pokemon Colosseum but I also know that could be nostalgia talking for me. Would be cool to see Arlie play it as it's my favourite game alongside B/W and HG/SS, and streamers get caught off by all the double battles. Loved this discussion, hope to see more video essays!! 😄👍

3D or not from my memory of Sword & Shield towns still felt like 2D side scrollers with 3D sprites in a game that was supposed to be fully 3D. I mean quite a few towns were just one or two roads and you couldn’t walk off the road into the grass. I still find it weird people calling 6th grade middle school. 6th grade was elementary school all the way up through 7th grade for me, then they changed it.

You missed the part of the pokemon sprites. The sprites have so much detail. I remember seeing the seviper in the trailer and I legit thought HOLY DAMN! Thats some sick sprite. You can see the textures of a snakelike creature which gives the pokemon lots of charackter. Another example the steel pokemon and it's iron reflecting light make them look alive instead of the gen 6 - 8 sprites. It's such a unique way of displaying pokemon that when I saw that seviper for the first time I thought it would maybe be a spinoff game that had nothing to do with the mainline games. For the rest I agree with your video except that I ectually liked shiny hunting. It can be frustrated that you hear or see nothing when a wild one is shiny but it also gives that extra bit of challange. Just masuda method is terrible. Since you have to wait and you cant do anything else in the game while picknicking. I wish they combine the feature of breeding pokemon everywhere with the freedom of other games where you can just explore the region or hatch other eggs.

I don't mean to sound like a Wolfe Glick or Pokeaimmd, but the battles were too easy. The terastal mechanic where the gym leaders change the type of their ace kinda only works on a first playthrough and even then you kinda catch on.

It’s been a problem since XY which is ironic as it’s my second favorite gen either the game holds your hands too much or not enough trainers use the new mechanics enough to make the battles more threatening in sword and shield there is an in story and logical reasoning for why Dynamaxing isn’t something everyone can do outside of a stadium but not enough trainers used mega evolution in XY and ORAS same with Z moves in the Gen 7 games while it’s nice to see terastal Pokémon in the wild they are far less threatening than the Alpha Pokémon in Legends Arceus or getting swarmed by 2 to 5 Pokémon in Arceus which regardless of your level it can be a problem depending on which Pokémon you run into
@Nat-ff8pq

@@dayvonlouis5187 I completely agree. Legends Arceus did a good job of showing off a unique way 9f making Pokemon games difficult. Making it so the player has to avoid getting ripped to shreds by an wild pokemon, and the buffing wild pokemon to do more damage despite level disadvantages is pure genius. But I feel as though they dumbed down a bit when making sv. None of the trainers use held items until the dlc (with the exception of booster energys on Sara's roaring moon and turo's iron valiant). All in all if you have a lick of competitive knowledge you can steamroll the game.

Very good summary of what it was like to discover the Paldea region. I was hopeful as I usually am with Pokémon games. They are what got me started with video games and I‘ll keep playing them no matter what. I think the story really was as dark as it gets for this franchise, which was cool to see. But as usual - it was a bit loooong 😅 even though the gameplay was hated, I still had a enjoyable time and what was special with this one is, that they really made shiny hunting a thing. Long overdue. But why take that away from legendaries? Knowing that I can’t catch any of them as shinys kinda killed my desire to collect a shinydex (as well as hunting down Dondozo at the lake which was just painful). I could go on for days but at the end - I still liked this generation and see so much potential in this franchise. But at some point, I wish they take a leap in terms of the software and let developers create the Pokémon game we all want and which they probably are able to deliver given the time 🙏

Interesting to hear different opinions to this game and Pokemon in general. For me, I've learned to take these games for what they are, not what I want them to be. We're not at the point yet of a REAL next gen Pokemon (for various reasons I won't get into rn). And in the topic of a direct comparison, PLA did everything so much better. Anyway, here are some of my takes. GOOD - Characters: Nemona, Penny and Arven, all the teachers, Director Clavel, most of the Gym leaders, even Billy and Lady O'Nare in the DLC. I enjoyed a lot of interactions with these characters and Clive was just too funny to me any time he appeared. Even Arven, who at the start of the game I hated, had me in tears (literally) by the end of his questline. Goes to show they can still make multi-dimensional characters, with particular personalities beyond their goals, in a Pokemon game. - Pokemon: Some of Gen 9 creatures immidiately jump to my favorites. Charcadet and it's evolutions are amazing designs, Nacli (best name in the franchise), all three starter lines are great! Except Quaquaval. - Shiny hunting: first game I've actually enjoyed shiny hunting. Purists may disagree but it's one of my favorite activities in the game. The sound notification from PLA is sorely missed though. OK - Music: While there are some bangers aside from what you mention (Nemona's, Team Star boss battle, even the raids theme) music is one part of the Pokemon games that is consistently good, and this time it was mostly disappointing. You said it, the open world themes are good but they get old quick, even though they are actually I think maybe 3? (east areas, west areas, mountain) It doesn't really get to the level of the old iconic route themes. BAD -Story: sorry to go strongly against you in this point but, even though the overall theme of each path is quite compelling and, like I said, some got me really emotional and connected, I'm convinced they are carried by the amazing characters, but the actual story development (the writing maybe) is what was very lackluster. BW2 and USUM had way better writing and development of the story. -Performance: hey at least a lot of it (the unplayable bugs) got fixed along the way :/ I could ramble more but let's leave it at that.

I dropped and sold Violet after about two weeks of casual play. I got so frustrated by the lag, bugs and general lackluster environment. I do have to appreciate that they tried this. But Sword & Shield and Legends Arceus were way better. And even though everyone likes to bash Pokemon for these games, it’s just time that the next Nintendo console gets a very significant power boost, so it’s able to handle the new reality of these open world games for Nintendo consoles.

I got both game Played Violet from start to story finish, and then put it down, I’ve watched the dlc get released, I’ve watched streamers say “play S/V now and get this Pokémon in a terra raid” and I just, haven’t played it again Tbf Zelda TOTK came out last year and that’s what I’ve played a lot, and I tend to play Mario kart or pod racer with my brothers Great video Airlie, great detail!

This was a really well put together video. As a game designer in the field myself, you really hit the nail on the head for a lot of things that I really disliked (and liked!) about Scavo. My brother and I described these games as the worst games ever that actually had a chance to be a 10/10, because some of the high points, like the beginning exploration and Area Zero were so well executed that even with all of the bad stuff, we still came away with a positive opinion about the game! But I thought you did a great job with how you worded your opinions, you took a lot of frustrations that I (and I assume many other players) had and pinpointed which parts really dragged the game down and why. Great video!

Yes it has been a great improvement since launch, but still not acceptable with so many people like me out there still dealing with this. I just want to play a new Pokémon game without having to take a Tylenol almost every time I launch it😢 Great Video Arlie!

The 'character customisation' in this game is inexcusable. The only reason why it is so limited is because of a very poorly executed school. I didn't experience as many performance issues/glitches as most, and I actually really like the art style. Online Tera Raids are basically an unjustified punishment and should have been fixed ages ago. But, dear God, I *_loathe_* the Snacksworth Quests... Those aside, I thought that the story was one of the best in the series. The Terastal phenomenon is my favourite gimmick as well.

If the game ran well it would probably be one of the best pokemon games yet. I'm sad that pokemon can get away with putting out unfinished/broken games knowing they are still going to sell incredibly well. I also really hope they bring back the shiny noise as it was so helpful for shiny hunting. Amazing video as always!!!

I dropped Pokemon after BDSP so it's nice to see a retrospective after the initial hype should be worn off by someone who, despite clearly having your share of grievances with the game, still plays the game from time to time. Initial release opinions are incredibly polarized for most people, but oftentimes they stop after their first playthrough so they'll just keep repeating the initial opinion without developing their thoughts further. Good stuff 💯👌

Alright! I resonated with the Team Star story so I memorized that story... I think. Basically Before the beginning of Team Star, there were bullies in the academy, the Team Star bosses were all the original kids that found each other and became friends because of their similarities of being victims of bullying. They decided to band together and find the other victims to stop the bullying, thus was born Team Star. Team Star builds cars and has modified Revavroom and all their Pokemon to confront their bullies on a designated day, that day comes and the bullies completely chicken out, so much so that they drop out of school. This then pins the blame on Team Star, framing them as the villains, Penny (aka Cassiopeia, or The Big Boss because she's the leader of Team Star) then goes to the director and asks that her friends are not punished and she takes all the blame for what happened. The director complies but instead of punishing her he takes pity and also blames himself for the bullying that was happening, so he sends her on an over a year foreign study to her old home, Galar. After that, the school resets itself, all the teachers and the director resign, as it was their inability to stop the bullying that led to this Now, some time later, the new Director has issued a warning to the bosses of Team Star to return to school or be expelled, and they're not returning until they hear from their friend, The Big Boss. So Penny, having heard of this, decides that not only does she need to get them back in school, she needs to disband the team. So she, with the identity of Cassiopeia, recruits you to take each of the badges from the Team Star bosses, as the badge signifies who's in charge and must be handed over if one is ever beaten. Clive shows up, and Clive is an identity formed so that Director Clavell could get in the bases and to the bosses so that he could learn the truth, because, iirc, a old higher up before the school purge deleted all the info regarding Team Star. So you and Clive unearth the truth. This is a story about victims framed as villains. And it didn't help that the new recruits were trying to pressure people into joining. But yeah, I think that's it, I probably forgot stuff let's be honest.

I really enjoyed your video! Here are my thoughts on Gen 9 (aside from the DLC, haven't played it yet): Story: I honestly thought Victory Road was boring. The Gym Leaders were uninteresting, and I really wasn't invested in Nemona's character the way I was with Penny and Arven. Plus I hated that they made Larry be a Flying E4 specialist instead of finally having a Normal E4 specialist. Having been bullied in elementary school and junior high, I identified with Starfall Street, and Path of Legends was of course amazing. The Way Home was exceptional, and I really liked how they did the growing sense of "Something is SERIOUSLY WRONG HERE" the further into the crater you go. Plus the emotional ending. Well done, Game Freak. Region: I was playing Breath of the Wild at the same time as Violet, and, yeah. Paldea is boring. I couldn't stop myself from continuously making comparisons between BotW and Scarlet and Violet (and Skyrim to a lesser extent). If I'm looking for a beautiful Pokemon region I'm going to replay Ultra Sun. Which was released on a less powerful system and is still prettier than Scarlet and Violet. (I really like Alola, Gen 7 is one of my favorite generations.) Music: I agree with everything you said. Gameplay: See what I said about music.
