Dr Jemaima Tiatia-Seath of Auckland University spoke at an event called Raising the Bar, and this was shared on radio last Sunday. It was a talk where she spoke candidly about institutional racism, sexism and feminism. She spoke from the heart.
Then on Monday morning she came to work and found a racist seven-minute answerphone message on her work voicemail from someone who'd heard her on radio and who was clearly upset with what she'd said.
Marama T-Pole speaks with Tiatia-Seath on this week's talanoa.

I agree ..... we need to have this conversation. If we don’t speak up.....others will create the narrative for us. So be BRAVE.... speak up.

Biggest Mistake we have in our Polynesian Country, is this ... we let others tell Our Story. Now it’s about time we throw all these stories into the trash and Write Our Own based on our own narratives This is how we Loose some of our very own land so to speak. Be brave Beautiful Dr Jemaima, you are doing something right that explains the resistance from these Swindlers

Dr. Jemaima keep your head up and keep your heart strong! Im with you all the way.. just forget abt that old lady's useless message.. by the sound of it, she's a real true racist and thats for sure and I feel sorry for her. I can tell the way she speaks, there's no room in her own heart for the LOVE.. may our good Lord bless & be with you Dr Jemaima Tiatia-Seth.

Dr Jemaima would not be where she is today if the Nation had not been built by the Europeans, and I'm a Polynesian. What we need to consider is that both races make contributions in different ways. One is no greater than the other but their contributions are extremely different. I for one have flourish from my education which has given me a platform to create success and wealth.

If that is the case then Dr JTS was stating fact from her perspective as well. That old lady was implying that the Europeans who built NZs view is paramount and no one should say otherwise. I'm sure the tangata whenua of Aotearoa have a lot to say about that.
@waitahamangi

@@meref9973 that is the case. It's not racist. It's a discussion that brings every race to the table and that no race is superior. At the same time, give credit to people who has helped built NZ.

If you look through history....colonialism was forced on Pacific nations and New Zealand natives. Pacific Islanders actually originate from Asia. NZ war ships took possession of Rarotonga in the early 1900s...and they implemented laws in the mid 1950s that dilute Ariki royal leadership that had been in place for generations. We should be teaching pacific island heritage in our education system.
@waitahamangi
@waitahamangi 3 жыл бұрын
@UCBCX38Fsy08lZTQQaZMJh9w prove it! Are you saying that all early settlers to NZ were lazy and that we Polynesian and Pasifika did everything? We continue to enslave ourselves by blaming the pakeha's before us. Which Pakeha exactly are you saying? Pakeha from Wales? England? Scotland? Ireland? France? Germany? These are all different cultures and race.
@meref9973
@meref9973 3 жыл бұрын
@@waitahamangi Dr Jemaima brought her perspective to the table and that lady didn't want a par of it. Dr J has a valid point. She does the same job as her European male colleagues and she gets paid $7000 less. People of colour have been dealing with this disparity for a long time. The only reason that change will come about is to raise the issue.
