It took a while to get around to restoring this drill press but it was definitely worth the wait.
Now I just need to make a stand for it and maybe a vintage style control box.
Just to add some more info:
Paid $200 for the drill press, the VFD was $90, bearings and belt $125 and the paint $40.
A new Brobo Walden drill press can be found here for comparison brobo.com.au/p... They're not exactly the same but they are very similar.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

It is always worth fixing old stuff, and new. As consumers (not businesses where time and money are the bottom line ), we have a social responsibility to keep stuff out of the waste stream and landfill. It is (or should be) the other side of the coin of consumerism. Also old fixed stuff is just cooler. And learning the skills to fix newer value-engineered items is satisfying in it's own way
@markjust86
@markjust86 Жыл бұрын
Also the older stuff is usually better made so it is actually probably going to last a lot longer!
@FliesLikeABrick
@FliesLikeABrick Жыл бұрын
@@markjust86 agreed - however it's also worth people learning how to fix even today's cheaper stuff. Worst case you learn something and it still has to get thrown away (or given to someone who wants to fix it), best case it's fixed and a new skill is learned. Too many people unfortunately think that just because todays stuff wasn't made with repair in mind means it can't be fixed. It can, someone designed and made it in the first place - it just takes an evolving skill set and refusing the pro-consumerism brainwashing that "if isn't worth fixing" or "it can't be fixed"
@markjust86

@FliesLikeABrick since I was a kid, whenever I got some new device or tool, I would take it apart and discover how it works. I have found that a lot of newer items are purposely made so repares are not possible. But you are right, most things can be repaired.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzfaq.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

I've inherited my grandfathers old Waldown drill press, he never got rid of a tool, instead finding ways to keep them going. Mine is missing its depth gauge and depth stop. The original motor is long gone also, in its place is an old washing machine motor. It is otherwise a brilliant drill press and well worth keeping around. I plan to rebuild it in the future and keep it going for another 70 years.

Stuff I have restored over the years I tend to give it a good paint job and add pin stripping. Then any thing I can do to modern it up I will. I did an old drill press, a full floor model from maybe the 50s or 60s, I replaced the motor with a much newer and more powerful one. I change out the belt drive unit for a salvaged speed changer. Installed a set of led lights along with a moveable one off the main case, kinda like a spot light one. I used an old lamp to make it. I then added in the RPM gauge from the one I salvaged the speed changer off of. I found and added a much better rectangle table than a round one. I made all new aluminum knobs and knob switches. The last thing I was working on was a quick change quill handle and a electric quill. So I could set the down speed pressure with out having to hold it the whole time. It was super fun and when I sold it, it ended up sitting outside for several years, sad to see such a good drill press go unused. The guy paid a pretty ( 300 bucks ) penny only to have his wife buy him a brand new one. Though I am sure mine was still way better than that junk one he has now. I no longer live in that area and not likely to ever see it again and I do not need it. I have a bench top one that I kept after I sold everything and in the last 3 years I have not used it once. Thinking about giving it and everything I have to my neighbor in exchange for some free labor. I have a bunch of odds and ends that he could use.

Having a drill press around the shop is a very good thing when needed. It is far cooler to have a vintage unit that you restored yourself (bragging rights) than to buy a lesser quality unit (for a higher price). Great job on that restoration. Vintage drill presses can be found for very little money and if you are willing to put in some time and elbow grease, you can have a drill press to be proud of owning.

I just found your channel, very well done...no wasted time. I'm here in the USA and have 2 very old drill-press quite similar, but the 'pillar' or floor mount type....I bought them with a ton or two of stuff from a welding shop that was closing up, back in 1981. Both are well used but still work, need a bit of care.. It has a hole in the main casting behind the front pulley, there's a bracket that fits in there with 4 groove idler pulley so you can get more speeds...Of the 2, only one had holes drilled in the work platform. I welded them up with some Lincoln Nickle 99 stick electrode...not quite a visual 'match' but came out pretty nice. I've drilled 1" (25.4mm)...holes in a 3/4" (19mm) steel plate with no problem. So the 'low-speed' idler pulleys are great. That 'ton or two' of welding stuff..? A 4X8 foot 1" thick work table...used for beating on and tacking stuff onto. Then, a 4X8 foot 2' thick plate that had been Blanchard ground...no beating on that...a few threaded holes in one corner where it had a hydraulic bender attached...both plates had a nice heavy frame underneath and 6" steel casters...so there's a TON or TWO. Then about 60 boxes and sealed steel containers of stick electrodes...50# each...another ton or two... I like your work here, I'll check out some more of your videos.

Loved this. As someone who restored an old drill press years ago, it is a very enjoyable project. I would actually encourage anyone looking to try their hand at tool restoration to start with something like a drill press. Even old chinese ones are worth doing so long as the body as cast iron and not broken as little things like new high quality bearings make all the difference in the world. Really easy project, really satisfying to complete and rather cheap to acquire because most people don't know what to do with old ones.

If you hold the bottle flat side down when you pour something like your degreaser, it will pour faster and more controllably without glugging and splashing. Thanks for sharing your projects. I've come to really enjoy your videos. 🙂

This video brought so many memories because my father used to have the same drill in his workshop and as a kid I used it so many times to make things. It’s a beautiful restoration thank you

Neil… most of us would really enjoy watching you do/build things around your property! In past vids, you’ve mentioned building a new dining table, dining table light fixture, kitchen island, and you were going to craft some fencing to wrap around the carport somehow. I personally, would love to see you build out those things. I bet it would make Mrs. P pretty happy 👍🏻👍🏻

I have found that a scotchbrite wheel on the angle grinder will remove paint and rust without removing any metal. Hope that this helps. I love those old machines.

I love restoring old tools. I restored a small 8” bench top drill press a couple of years ago. It’s one of my most used tools in the shop. Yours came out better than new.

DEFINITELY worth it. I bought a complete, working, one-year-only Craftsman/Walker-Turner 15 inch drill press built in 1935 at an auction for only $25 because nobody else wanted it. I am cleaning and restoring it and hope it will be as wonderful as yours when done.

What a lovely old machine. Worth fixing? Absolutely! It'll outlast all of us! Fantastic job sir! The saying "They don't make them like they used to" is so true when it comes to tools. All the stuff you buy these days is made by the cheapest vendor basically. Old tools FTW!

I've enjoyed every one of your videos, and I'd be quite happy to see videos of you fixing the falling-down-around-you house -- two birds with one stone or some other metaphor. And I'll bet nobody will say "nah, don't show us that" to any of your video ideas!

Did an old Delta/Rockwell radial arm drill press a few years back. Always worth fixing up the old stuff. They may not have all the fancy electronics but they’re solid, build by people who cared and took pride in their work.

Excellent restoration. This drill press is now a very useful shop tool. The broken casting repair with JB Weld is undetectable. I think you should repaint the logo in white because the opening pictures show it that way. Thumbs up from the USA

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS VIDEO! I bought an 1940-1955ish drill press with the mortise attachment in okay shape. It runs but the motor cord cover is tatty and the there is something going on with the Chuck. But it looks very similar to yours. I think it’s beautiful! It’s so pretty!!!! Tools for me are like purses to other ladies😹. I was only brave enough to but it because of your video! I’m taking it down to the motor shop to have them fix up the motor and give it the once over. Then I’ll clean off my work bench or kitchen island if my teddybear doesn’t notice…😹. Last time he caught me washing car parts in the dishwasher. I mean I had to go work… and didn’t have time yo clean the tools off.

Well worth restoring, the quailty of the old machines is far superior to a lot of modern machines available today. I use a elderly Fobco 10 speed pillar drill, which has a 7/8" chuck,saved it from being skipped some years ago.

My dad used to reman electric motors. Ran the biz out of our garage for several years, until he fixed enough motors locally the work tapered off. Too small of an area to support it full time. He "sold" it to his partner/best friend (he bought our house to get in the country and it was included in the paperwork to make it official) and he did it as a part time side job and not worried about supporting a family. Dad then moved Ma and 2 of my sisters to Memphis, TN, the spring of '85 (I had moved to New Orleans and my oldest sis stayed with an aunt and uncle to finish school them marry her in the Air Force fiance). His partner was occasionally fixing motors last time or two Dad was up (2019) and we stopped by his house, but the subject hasn't come up the last few times we've talked since Dad's passing in '21, so I don't know if he still does. Some of those were good sized motors (2 feet/610mm in diameter).

I would take THAT drill press over any of the garbage drill presses produced today. Solid, precise, simple. Designed to perform its function perfectly, smoothy, for a long time, not designed to look pretty on a retail shelf at the lowest manufacturing cost possible.

Exactly what I want to do with an old drill press some day! It always galls me to have to stop one's work flow and mess with a belt change to get the right speed for the job in hand. Truth to tell it usually doesn't get done... That VFD addition is the bee's knees! 🙂
