I was never sure whether I should make another kayak video but many of you asked for it, so here it is. There were a lot of requests for a kumiko deck design so I went for that too.
The video would've been with you a couple of weeks ago but as I was nearing the end of the project I got Covid which delayed thing a little.

For a kayak of this quality, you'd be looking at somewhere north of AUD$10k, perhaps closer to $15k.

Not sure how big a market there is for such an article, but hopefully folks appreciate the staggering work that goes into making something so complex and beautiful. I'm a woodworker (hobbyist) and years ago made an Australian Red Cedar cot for my first-born. It had 88 hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, bookmatched panels etc. and was hand sanded to 2000, finished with coats of Danish Oil etc. In all modesty, it was (and still is) a stunning piece - at least by my standards. To have made it work out financially, I worked out I'd need to sell it for something close to $30k as well - which is why I still have it I suppose. 🙂 Hopefully in time, my son - now 13 - will appreciated the efforts I put into giving him a luxurious start to life!

I've occasionally built things with fiberglass. Usually 5+ layers. Never would have imagined a single layer would be completely transparent! This is beautiful

You probably need just the right epoxy, to match the refractive index of the glass. When you do, the results are indistinguishable from magic.

I would love a calendar in the shot so we get to fully appreciate the weeks and months this artwork took to create. And I love the overlay in-lay technique! That really made this kayak so beautiful, I didn’t even want it to get wet. But it’s a kayak first. Artwork, close second.

Neil Paskin is the purest form of craftsman I can imagine. Talent, vision, creativity, and persistence. Your videos are always interesting, and your work shines like no other. I especially like whenyou point out areas that didn't go as planned, or how you fix things. I should add, it isnot only woodworkers and artisans who will praise this work. I'd bet a damn fine amount that any kayakers you encounter are going to go nuts when they see that beautiful boat, and then you can tell them that you builts it.

It is the epitome of the full old quote, often used to denigrate when it should be to exalt; "A jack of all trades and a master of none, is almost always better than a master of one" Neil clearly takes the time and effort to learn and apply the correct combination of skills, techniques, and materials that are peculiar to a myriad of disciplines and utilise them to fulfil his projects. Anyone can master one thing with enough practice, it takes a special kind of person to put that amount of effort into becoming proficient enough at lots of things.

It's not the full build, there are about 200 things he is doing off camera. Some of them easy with enough knowledge, Most of them hard even with knowledge, and all of them meticulously boring to watch. This kayak is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work thousands of hours of knowledge and thousands of dollars worth of tools.

Man this guy teaches me so much about patience, persistence and positive attitude. Makes a mistake, no stress re makes the part or restarts. Patience in taking is slow and steady like the kumiko in this project. I’m typically in a rush to try get the project done as quick as possible and then get so upset when i make a mistake that some projects never get completed. Keep it up mr Pask. Teaching us more that just woodworking.

That's truly a work of art. I used to watch my dad repair and refinish bass boats when I was just a young girl in the 1970's. He used vinyl pinstriping to make his own professional-looking designs beneath fiberglass finishes. I would always help at the end by polishing all the brass fittings on the live wells and rails, etc. Good times!

As I watched I realized that my kayak, another Nick Schade design, was basically formed just as yours, but with bulkheads. As a result, it is heavier than yours. I can sit on the cockpit coaming, and with me being 210 lbs, it needs the extra strength. You did a lovely job!

2nd time watching this build and I'm still in awe! Not only is it a beautiful kayak, but it shows your skill, imagination, attention to detail, perseverance, and inventive nature. The deck makes not just a statement, but a complete essay on the quality of the project and your entire approach to this and any other build you choose to endeavor. I was particularly impressed by the extensive fiberglass process that you were able to do ALONE! That would normally require at least two persons. PLUS, you said it was your first fiberglass effort! Great job.

For veneering stuff, you should get (second hand) one of those high end irons that are about 7 cm long. They're small enough that you can use them for stuff like this without messing up the other work you're doing, and the platen part of the machine is a solid piece of stainless (unlike normal irons where it's a sheet that's bent around the core), which allows you to custom shape the nose. source: I've seen a few wood workers do this.

aserta, I think your talking about finishing irons used in model aircraft building. The larger ones head ( part that gets hot ) is about 2” or 50 mm by 3 1/2” or 80 mm and shaped similar to a clothes iron. Also one can put a cloth sock made just for the iron to give it a soft non-marring face/surface. The other is a trim iron, looks like a soldering iron except the tip. The tip looks like an mini cloths iron about 1/4 “ or 8mm by 1” or 25mm long. Both of them get hotter than a cloths iron and both are adjustable for the desired heat setting.

It's a lovely film. Just enjoying the beauty of good craftsmanship. Me myself can't build any due to age, bad strength and nowadays not much mental capacity. Note, I am not complaining, only forced to accept what life brings to you. Build, play and fully do beautiful things when you can. Very sudden it can change BUT I can still view and find joy in these sort of lovely films. Thankyou for a good film, both shootings and content.

I'm taking Marine Manufacturing right now my junior year in HS, this puts into perspective what my class will be working on this year (once the actual wood arrives to cut into strips) I can't wait to see how ours turns out, though I sadly doubt it will be anywhere near the quality of yours because out of the maybe 25 in my class, only 5 students, including me, seem to take the class seriously.

You absolutely enthralled me for 46 straight minutes - what an aboluste masterpiece! The lines on her are just stunning, and the kumiko takes it to another level. Bravo, what patience, attention to detail, and pure craftsmanship.

Amazing job on the kayak. Thanks for sharing. Regarding your personal protective equipment - the P100 filter you're using is for particles only, not vapor. I don't know the resin or have its safety data sheet (SDS), but I assume you want a vapor cartridge to protect against volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). If you call 3M, they will point you in the right direction. Regarding the varnish, read the SDS and make sure the grit is not a peroxidizable organic compound (POC); POCs are shock sensitive. Thanks again for this vid; you do amazing work.

That’s an absolutely amazing piece of art. As a kayaker and woodworker, I’m envious, and have gotten curious, but I don’t know that I have the patience to pull off this kind of project. Well done for sure.

They make tiny little irons, basically a little iron head on a soldering iron, often used for intricate swing projects, like doll clothes, but would probably be perfect for the veneer kumiko if you ever do it again. "Clover MCI-900 Mini Iron"

As ever Mr Paskin, absolutely beautiful work. The patience you must have is incredible but so worth it in the end. As an ex paddler of generic plastic boats it must feel like nothing else to be out on the water in a piece of art such as this, created by your own hand and on such a stunning morning and setting.
