I want to thank you for this chat, not only because Tegan is my personal hero, but because it was really inspiring. I developed tinnitus a year ago, just when I was considering joining a band as a bass player, but because I didn’t have any information about it, since it’s not talked about in my country, I just got really depressed and gave up. Listening to Jim made me recover my hope and I think I’m going to try to go for it.

What a great interview. I’ve been a T&S fan since, honestly, Napster existed at the time of their first album and someone in another country on the internet said I might like them. Have never looked back. I’ve been writing songs for a little over a year now and I think the constant reinvention of T&S from album to album has had a huge influence on me. I’ve been doing some electronic style stuff recently as well, and I never expected I would feel drawn to that genre but it’s probably where I feel most comfortable, for the same reasons that Tegan talks about here. Thanks for such an excellent conversation.

Jim, it's "formative", not "formidable"! Great interview and awesome Fender ad, as always. I kind of agree and disagree about going back to remake an album that was popular--I feel like Recommit would fit right in on Futures, and it's also my favourite off of Surviving. I know that it very probably wasn't the goal when writing it to have it recapture that sound, but the heart of it is right back there. It's not the sound, it's the feeling.

Tegan, I respect that outlook of learning the music your own way. My brother is an amazing guitarist, but he can’t really read sheet music. He can just hear and feel the music. Shouldn’t that matter more?

Definitely important to feel your way through, but having theoretical knowledge is important because you learn to control those feelings rather than them controlling you. It makes your composition less random chords and gives it more intent

Vast majority of the time, the key is the first chord of the song and in rock you don't need to go any deeper than that. If someone knows enough to tell you you're wrong, then they know theory and they really didn't need to ask in the first place. I love taking the piss out of those people.

Speaking of album sequels. One of my favourite bands Dance Gavin Dance that blew up with their debut LP literally made a sequel to that record six years later. In their case it was a meta joke about a bunch of other bands in the scene trying to mimic their style and about them returning to original lineup. They have multi-part songs spanning over several records as well so this gimmick kinda worked I guess.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't know or care about all the ins and outs of whatever your instrument is. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years, still don't know the name of most chords/notes unless I really concentrate and try to figure it out (I'm not even sure I'm using real chords in most of what I write! I just put my fingers all over until it sounds good), still don't know anything about effect pedals, and will never know how to read/write music. I basically have to remember everything I write by ear, or the patterns of where I put my fingers on the fret board. I'll never "shred" like Van Halen, but I'm OK with that because for the most part crazy technical lead riffs sound ridiculous, and can ruin the song (with the exception of "hot for teacher"). But IMO, punk rock is more about how the sound moves you, not technical chops

I'm loving the show, Jim! The VST plugin Mixed in Key, Studio Edition (mixedinkey.com/studio-edition/) does a good job quickly finding the key(s) of an audio clip. I have no affiliation with them. Alan Walker has songs named Alone and Alone, pt. 2, which is kind of shameless. But hey, all of his songs sound exactly the same; so maybe it's more shameless that they aren't all named that way. Metallica has songs named The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, and The Unforgiven III. Maybe they are big enough and good enough because they're unforgiven too...
