Three paleoanthropology students struggle to decipher the meaning of a disappeared mentor's unanticipated discovery.
In the works since Fall 2019, Passage is my Emerson College BFA Thesis film and one of the best experiences I've had working on a project. The pandemic threw us off our planned schedule and required some creative editing solutions, but I'm incredibly grateful to my team for pulling through and helping me complete it. It's a personal film and I'm extremely fortunate to have been able to make it. Hope you enjoy!

My interpretation was that many different groups had at various times, studied the paintings and added to the wall as they got trapped, but since no skeletons around, the portal was accessed eventually by all the groups. Not sure what kind of world they get to or how they survive, so... I WANT MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just watched this and Time Capsule. I can see you have worked hard on both of these films and I like your approach. Passage was hard to understand, but I've read the interpretations of what others thought was going on and they seem plausible to me. So well done on both films. I hope you keep it up, if you enjoy doing it. I'd say there must be so much to learn in this art. It will be a life long process for you. Good luck with it all and thanks for putting your films out there. It's a brave thing to do, cos you'll get all sorts of people knocking you. Just remember you are the one putting the hard work in. And I really think you are going at it the right way. Take care.

This is quite a polished and professional project. My wife and I watched it last night and she enjoyed it as well -- she was a little confused immediately at the end but she found the concept very interesting and it sparked a good discussion. The camerawork and audio are excellent and it is both entertaining and thought provoking. I have some more thoughts about the organization/story if you want to hear them -- if so send me a message. But if not that's okay too -- sometime it's good to let a successful project breathe for awhile, and you certainly did a great job with this. I really like the sets/locations and what you did with lighting. Looking forward to your next project!

Wait - you have a wife who actually WANTS to watch and discuss a sci-fi film? Now that's a concept that would be rejected by film-makers as being just TOO unbelievable....

Can tell a lot of work went into that. Each of the shots seemed so carefully planned. The sound design was also superb! It occasionally gave me Eternal Darkness vibes. Not certain what was going on at all times but it was tastefully ambiguous, giving me lots to think about. Good stuff!

People seeing different drawings was a good idea. The pictograms being done by different people at different times flummoxed these so called palaeontologists but that can happen in caves used over millennia. I thought the father may have gone back in time.

I compliment the production and recognize the effort that went in to this project. I must admit that I am having trouble fully understanding the flow. I am not a artist like you so don’t have specific recommendations. Some additional depth to the plot or characters perhaps. But still a nicely assembled product.

This reminded me of a book I read when I was verrry young. Got it in the gift shop in a Rosicrucian museum in northern CA. It described how someone studying ancient, pre-adamic I would call it now, cave paintings(?) /art and when you run your hands along the lines you are instantly immersed in the story as it was being expressed. Well, that’s confusing. Maybe someone will get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@LukeRichert, 🔵 I guess if Bob Dylan can get away with it for all these years, you should be able to at least ONCE 'eh? I found it rather nebulous, devoid of clarification and without a clear premise. I couldn't tell where it was going,........ and then,... I didn't know where it went. The greater your viewers powers of imagination the more these "Open-ended-endings" become a curse & a bane, as a creative viewer you're never able to 'Tie-it-all-up' with any certainty!.... I prefer a nice tidy ending that stands-alone and makes a definitive statement, as opposed to one that requires either my participation or projection or leaves room for 'Decryption' or 'Translation'.

My take on it, is that they were trying to figure out how this group they discovered was so separate from the hominids of that era, kept to themselves and employed different artistry. It is them. Her dad went into a portal; the paintings were copies of what she drew in her youth. They followed him. They were the people they were discovering.

Ok never mind -I read your explanation. So yeah I thought the dad went into a portal, but it didn’t seem to connect to the story. The fact that the paintings were like hers I only caught at the end so I thought ok maybe dad was “pointing the way” for her to follow? Either way it was great.
