I was looking for this comment! How do you have cryo pods auto docs and a whole ass bartender but you have absolutely 0 maintenance protocol while everyone sleeps. And you shot the damn ship at an asteroid belt?!?! There wasn't a way around that? The space x rocket redirects 25000 times on its way to the space station but future tech can't do the same?!

@@Vancev99x The ship has counter measure to protect crews. It has a shield that deflected most of the asteroid. It reset the systems when it crash mid flight. The problem is what happened is a freak accident, a lone asteroid that shouldn't be able to pierce the ship left alone do any serious damage able to hit the computer of the reactor. I once saw a guy mention that if you just rearrange the 3 arcs for the film, it would've been WAY better. Instead of having the guy wake up, live alone for a year then wake up the girl, flip those two, start with the girl waking up, and when the commander dude asks the guy if he truly woke her up, THEN go bakc and show all he did and endured, before actually waking her up. I watched it like that, and man it flows way better.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 6 ай бұрын
I saw that too, I don't agree that it would have been way better, it would have been a way different type of movie. If you wanted a space suspense/thriller type of movie then you got that. The problem with the rearrange, was how much of the movie was Jim being alone at the beginning? Are you really going to have that much worth of flashback scenes in the movie? That would probably ruin the pace, and while having some would be ok, there'd need to have other footage thrown in there and at that point you have a completely different movie not just in the type of movie but also have considerably different footage that is used.

Another idea for a more interesting ending: Keep the whole movie the same, apart from Jim dies at the end saving everyone. Fade to black. Fade up again, we get some shots are showing the bedroom and hallways a mess again with food packets and stuff like when Jim was depressed. The final shot is Aurora (maybe visibly 3 or 4 years older so we can see a bit more time has passed than Jim managed alone given how angry she was about being woken up herself) sat at another guy's pod, with the toolbox just as Jim did. Staring at him, struggling to decide whether to wake him up or not. Cut to black.

The message got to Earth, and they launched a rescue ship with its new design which could travel four times faster than the old ship. The rescue ship got to Homestead 2 twenty years before the old ship was due to arrive. This gave them time to establish a colony and have it all go to batshit, so the sequel will be the old ship landing in the middle of a Mad Max situation.

I vaguely remember watching a show (might have been mythbusters) that tested the whole "pressure differential between space and spacecraft is so strong that it will kill you if you get caught in it" thing. And if my memory serves me right, the conclusion is that since a typical spacecraft is pressurized at 1 Earth Atmospheres, the pressure difference isn't actually strong enough to do any damage. You could easily plug the hole with your finger and be fine. And any kind of decently rigid object could serve as an emergency patch.
@TheWinjin
@TheWinjin 6 ай бұрын
Exactly this. 1 atmosphere of pressure difference is not a lot. Also I wouldn't be surprised if they actually made the pressure even lower, as it would probably help with a lot of engineering stuff. Also fun fact they would probably have not pressurised most of the ship as everyone's asleep anyway. Also the pressure difference between crew quarters and mechanical should probably constantly go down a little, so that in case of fire, the smoke is directed away from crew space.
@Morannar

As a molecular biologist, automating medicine like the autodoc is WAY easier than life extension. By miles and miles. The only ways we currently know to do it would need to be implemented in utero, for one, and would come with an EXTENSIVE risk of every type of cancer. Like, it wouldn't be an "If you get cancer" kind of deal, it would be a "How often do you get cancer?" It would occur in every organ in your body, regularly. Whether your immune system could kill it before it mutated past immune suppression would be a coin flip. And I don't care how advanced medicine is, a biological organism just can't keep up with that kind of chaos.

Other versions were that it showed a hole happy life of Aurora and Jim together, but in the end you find out it was actually Jim just imagining it, and the last shot is everyone waking up to find a rotten corpse sat outside her pod with candles and drawings of her using it as a shrine. Or that it should have been a horror film told from Aurora's perspective, with her slowly realising that he woke her up and being about fighting him off at the end. Similar chance for her to consider waking someone up for that classic "the villain wins" ending where it's like the evil has shifted into her now...

About the star thing: Our eyes hurt when we look at the sun from this distance, looking directly at a star while being so close to it would blind you instantly. Then again they probably have some barely see through glass that blocks out the super high brightness like in a welders mask. Then again you'd have to get it to like 99.99999999999999999999999999% opacity which then makes you wonder: How much money did it cost to manufacture a piece of glass with that precise of opacity just so they could look at a star.

I felt like the only reason they sat around examining the pods was to set up that there was only one workable pod. Now it just seems weird the crew guy wasn't like "hey we can rig up the auto doc as an extra pod."

@@einstien2409 The problem is the film was re-drafted so many times. Probably in one version there was an explanation on why he can't get into the crew flight deck, but that was probably before elements like being able to re-wire his band to make himself a luxury passenger to get straight into the luxury room got added in. Which now leaves us with the question on why can't he re-wire himself to be crew? If the only explanation is "because then the film wouldn't happen" it's bad writing. There needs to be an internal reason, people might not like it, that's subjective. But no reason at all is objectively bad writing, because it just meant the writer didn't think about it or didn't care. I have a similar issue with a lot of Lord of the Rings (and other high fantasy) where there are about 100 different ways you can solve the plot, usually because magic exists, but the only "reason" the author can ever write in as to why this wouldn't work is, "weeeellllll actually magic just....doesn't work that way..." which is basically the same unsatisfying "I didn't think of that, I didn't like that as much, with that I didn't have a story" explanation. More interesting versions of the story would be: *to make it a straight up horror film,* the same events but we see it from Jennifer Lawrence's perspective, and the ending is about trying to fight off Jim when he's spent years on the ship alone, going insane, learning where everything goes and even building new ways around the ship and traps and stuff. A full on stalker body horror film, where he doesn't necessarily want to kill her (like a slasher villain) but instead wants to KEEP her, to use for his own pleasure etc, maybe a bit of trying to kill her at the end as she fights back, obviously you'd have to set up some plausible way for her to beat him, then maybe she could find out he was lying about not being able to go back into stasis and she manages to go back in? *OR keep the whole movie the same sort of romance/drama,* apart from Jim dies at the end saving everyone. Fade to black. Fade up again, we get some shots are showing the bedroom and hallways a mess again with food packets and stuff like when Jim was depressed. *The final shot is Aurora (maybe visibly 3 or 4 years older so we can see a bit more time has passed than Jim managed alone given how angry she was about being woken up herself) sat at another guy's pod, with the toolbox just as Jim did. Staring at him, struggling to decide whether to wake him up or not. Cut to black.*

@@esmeecampbell7396 Since when were you an expert on fuckin magic? You're argument would make sense if prior Tolkien had written a scene of Gandalf actively doing very very impressive things with magic and we don't, we get him making impressive fireworks, making small balls of light, etc. If you actually read the books you would know that during Elrond's meeting about the One Ring they had a massive debate over various different methods of transporting or keeping the Ring from Sauron and each one was very clearly explained as to why it wouldn't work or had a worse chance of failure than the plan that was decided upon. Don't try and smear Tolkien's work because it doesn't fit with how you *think* magic should work. You're idea boils magic down into a 'get out of jail free card' and is infinitely more boring
@esmeecampbell7396
@esmeecampbell7396 6 ай бұрын
@@andrewmeyer3599 That is exactly my point, magic does boil down to a get out of jail free card though. Magic is either: Interestingly written in the plot to be useful, but then very open to "well why didn't they do this" meaning you have to be incredibly clever in how you write it. Or it's written like that, a damp squib that may as well not exist for all the actual IMPACT it has on the plot. And to be clear I AM as much of an expert on magic as Tolkein is...because it doesn't exist. But there's never any point trying to have a sensible discussion with the kind of Tolkein fanboy that thinks the sun shines out of his arse.

6:58 The film probably had them fly passed a star because that is the most plausible way for a vessel of that size to reliably travel long distance across the galaxy. It's essentially what comets do except more planned out rather than happenstance. They slingshot to the next star, to the next star, etc.
