Hi Jimmy, did school of PE use the reference handbook provided by NCEES when solving problems?

@@triciasweeny5479 Yeah. They used the reference handbook and majority of their practice problems could be solved by using the handbook. I'd say only 10% of their material and practice problems didn't come from the reference manual like certain construction problems.

Leading up to the exam, I was really stressed too, and felt like I wasn't prepared enough. But you are more ready than you think. Just keep doing practice problems each day, and use your references. Worst case scenario, you can always retake the exam if needed. You got this!

did you use any of the additional references/standards provided for the WRE exam? I am 3 days away from my exam and haven't really studied those but i have never had to use them on any problems so far. I am debating if i should spend time reviewing them in detail or focus on studying more problems.. also did you take a break from study the day before exam? thanks & congrats

I did use the additional references provided for the WRE exam, but mostly used the main reference manual. I would do a quick skim through each reference to familiarize yourself with them before heading into the exam. The main focus at this point should be just doing practice problems. The day before the exam, I studied for about 3 hours and then rested. Good luck!

Could you use study material from the pencil and paper exam to study for the CBT exam just using the reference manual?

Some of the material and questions have changed over the years, so the material from the pencil and paper exam may be slightly outdated. I would double check the study material you have with the topics listed on the NCEES website to ensure the material still matches before studying.

They also have "select all that apply" and fill in the blank, but most questions are multiple choice.

Thank you I appreciate it! Going straight to studying for the PE after you pass the FE is a smart move, the material will be fresh, especially for the morning section like you alluded to. Don't forget to reward yourself with a little time off in between though!

It may be difficult at first without the experience, but if you take an online course, that should certainly help, and will help cover all necessary topics and problems.

I ordered the 2 breadth exam book you showed, but it seems like the answers used equations not specifically stated in the reference handbook. I only did a couple questions from it. Did you feel like the answers correlated with the handbook?

For the problems that use equations that aren’t in the handbook, I wouldn’t worry too much about them. However, it’s still important to understand the concepts behind those questions, since the PE exam may test you using conceptual questions. There are plenty of questions in that practice exam that have the equations in the reference manual as well.

@@LJExcel The practice portal pro covers both the breadth and depth section, with hundreds of different practice problems. In terms of readiness, it depends on how comfortable you are with the material at this point. I will say it was my favorite tool when preparing for the exam and helped build my confidence tremendously. I made a video dedicated to the practice portal pro, I recommend checking it out!

They don't have specific reference materials (the ones available in the test) for any of the in-depth civil exams. Check here: account.ncees.org/reference-handbooks/

There is only one Reference Handbook. You will have many Design Standards. The list of Design Standard is given at the end of the Syllabus.

There is some overlap in material (transportation, geotechnical, environmental, and structural), but there are also differing topics as well. The FE has more topics and questions, compared to the PE. However, the PE goes into greater detail for problems compared to the FE. I do think having the material fresh in your head from the FE will help you with the PE, but additional studying will be needed.
