I can always revisit this track and smile with one nostalgic little tear starting to form. Passion pit heavily affected me and my taste of music for a good year or 2 during my youth.

OMG same here! This song was one of the highlights of my childhood. I used to listen to this when I was on my way to the pool with my family when I was about 6. Passion Pit was the main singer of my childhood.

A ways back- years even, I had dated this really wonderful person that I met at work. We couldn’t let anyone know. Polices and nonsense. But- this song would play overhead and we would always dance across the opposite sides of the sales floor for just a moment and lock eyes for just about 1/2 second. Such incognito 😉 style, people thought it was staged for customers. It’s silly and also such a good memory. We parted on good terms and this song will always make me think of him with a smile.

I had a really sad and difficult time through high school as an addict and this was always mine too. 2012. The years of the meth/Molly and indie sleez encouraging our own oblivion. So nostalgic, so sad, so joyous, so coded in it’s smiling melody. I looked happy from afar when I danced along, but I cried the whole time. Sending love to anyone who gets this or is struggling with what this song is about. U will taste the joy of life past this. Live through this

aceventurablaze It’s about heroin addiction. “Stolen gold inside the emperor’s tomb” is the heroin in the needle, “squeeze the lemon juice to rain” is a reference to the lemon juice users use to dissolve brown heroin to liquid and “scars on your ceiling” is the blood that spays out of the vein when you withdraw the needle, often hitting the ceiling. That is, among many, many other references. I’d understand if you didn’t get it though, because I didn’t either and thought it was about depression or something similar, as that’s when I first discovered this song was while severely depressed.

Michael Angelakos said this song was not about drugs. I think it's about a manic phase caused by his bipolar disorder Bipolar disorder can cause hallucinations which explains the "outlining sidewalks in halogen" and the depressive episodes explain the scars.

america really is a melting pot... Magnum Force/Clark Kent rhythm section go black-gospel in F major with Lou-Reed/Robert Plant/Peter Gabriel on vocals telling an unfathomably deep story with multiple ambiguous possible interpretations. The arrangement has so many diatonic sections, some like the intro and outro a bit average, but the verse ! wow !!!!!. the gospel III, IV, V to I suspension like a sort of ultra-lydian continual orgasm..., quite uplifting... ! Plus: the live drum track nicely captures an insanely good feel, like Stevie Wonder meets John Bonham.. But the creepiest thing is the weird non 4/4 bar between the first and second verses..., where the fuck does the ONE disappear to...? can a drummer explain how to count that fill...?
