Thanks for tapping into this. Was recently at the Schiit demo store for the first time and it was both enjoyable and so very informative to experience a lot their stuff on a wide array of headphones. Challenges aside, I love how they keep things in pragmatic and proper perspective while still pushing boundaries. The fact that this visionary company can create such high end performance audio that is so accessible is no small feat and it is easy to foresee a potential future where such demo stores may get deployed in major cities.

BTW, you said something that really resonated with me regarding soundstage depth, layering and 3D perception of the individual sounds on certain types of DACs. I have also noticed this effect on certain types of upsampling. I have a Soncoz SGD1 that I find excellent in terms of clarity and timbre but noticeably flat in soundstage. However, when I feed it an upsampled DSD512 stream from Roon+Qobuz, I get dramatically improved depth and layering that equals or bests my Chord Mojo 2. I can only assume this is because the quality of the sigma delta modulation in Roon (on an Intel i7 CPU) far exceeds what the ESS chip in my DAC can manage. Looking at the ESS chip datasheet, it does appear likely the on-chip SDM is bypassed for a native DSD input. Have you experimented with upsampling to DSD on chip-based DACs?

That's an interesting point and I haven't played with that, but it could definitely help because it seems to be the filtering that's the issue.

I picked up a Folkvangr and a bifrost 2/64 a couple months ago. Love that combination with my Clears. I have it setup in a walk in closet setup for dedicated music listening. I wish I could have gotten a dac in the gunginir format for stackability and the extra RCA output, but I'm making it work. I couldn't use this system on my desk because it's too engaging. But just sitting there with no distractions, it's easy for the hours to just disappear.

Yeah I agree with this from a stack combo. I haven't bought the bifrost yet but thinking about it. My Amp is SA-1 and I have a modius under it. For some reason, I like the look better when the dac has more surface area than the Amp. Right now mine are about the same size and not my favorite look. It seems like the bifrost is so good and at a great price point. Waiting for the Passion for Sound review first, and maybe next year (we will see!). So listening to this it seems like maybe now is not the time to invest in a higher end DAC? I’m building my schiit stack now and was considering the Bifrost 2/64 thinking it’s probably the last chance to somewhat reasonably get into their multibit tech before chip shortages dry supply completely up. But listening to this sounds like there’s maybe some innovation on the horizon from Schiit for next year? What are your thoughts?

haha never mind i pulled the trigger! Got tired of hearing usb hum and noise with my cheap creative g6 dac running into my saga then lokius. Hoping i made the right choice, i'm single ended on all my connectivity for now since i'm running a magni heresy amp into 1770s. I remember you said in one of your older interviews there was a particular product not ideal SE, but it looks like the 2/64 should be fine?
@PassionforSound

Great choice! BF2/64 isn't going to be superseded any time soon based on what I have heard and inferred. It also works just as well single-ended as balanced so relax and enjoy 🙂
@iridium130m
@iridium130m Жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound awesome thank you. After pouring through your Schiit videos I did find my concern and it was the single ended output performance of the Modius. Sounds like I need to avoid. So if i want to eventually go to balanced interconnects between everything then maybe the Jotunheim 2 might be the better way to go for an amp to feed my 1770s? Maybe better single ended output then the Modius? I’d probably just balanced connect the bifrost directly into the jutenheim since I can use tone control in my player. Thoughts?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's the Magnius (Modius is the DAC) and I would give it a miss for single ended usage. It's not bad from the SE output, but clearly not as good as the balanced output so I would definitely go straight to the Jotunheim 2. Or, you could mix brands and go for a Geshelli Archel if you want SE output only with either SE or balanced input.

For the record, the blacks are not quite an exact match. The newer black is slightly smoother in visual and physical texture, leading to a color that is a shade darker. The gray text is easier to see on the new black finish. It looks a hair sharper and is a tad more saturated, especially improving readability in darker environments. The new black finish is unambiguously better to my eyes. I am comparing a Lokius purchased September 2023 and a Modius purchased March 2024, and will now forever be unable to unsee this.

Why does Jason always have a glass of wine in his hand when he gives interviews? Who else does this habitually? The most parsimonious answer is that he is alcoholic. But I know nothing about the man.

I've had some flack for posting this. But seriously every interview I've seen he is indulging in wine (there may well be interviews I have not watched of course). As someone else posted below, he even has his glass filled up during this interview. This is hardly normal drinking behaviour for a business man discussing his product. It amounts to drinking on the job, an ill advised habit. Now, it could be to reduce speaking anxiety; it could just be an affectation. I do not know. But I do know that this is abnormal and possibly suggestive of a serious problem. Can anyone name someone else in the audio business who does this?

I think it might come down to the fact that (at least in my case) our interviews are late in his day due to the time zone difference so he's having an after hours drink. I can't speak about other interviews though.

I actually like that he is relaxed enough to enjoy himself without fear of being judged for his life choices. I don’t drink, but I support people being themselves if no one gets hurt.
