These episodes are incredibly addictive. I bet this would be a popular show nowadays as well, though I don't know if celebrities of that level would play these days.

When being introduced, Peter Lind Hayes looks just like a bobble head doll, wondering if he was the inspiration. Bedlam has to be THE toughest word to relate to their partners. Thanks again for another great episode

Question: was everyone slim back then or did they just screen for attractive and slim contestants? Or a bit of both?

Everyone was slim. Then the government introduced GMO's and high fructose corn syrup into the American diet.

@@mnmz2 Wrong. It was in 1964 that the Socialist Democrat L.B.J. got elected and he ushered in his "Great Society" plan of modified communism. The Federal Government started GIVING money, housing vouchers and Food Stamps to people who did NOT go to work. The Government rewarded people for doing NOTHING. People started pigging out, and are still doing it today. The contestants on most game shows in the last twenty some years have been blimpos wearing smocks or muumuus or Triple Extra Large tee shirts instead of Suits/ties and dresses. The people on "Password" dressed better because most had jobs / tasks, and some "class", unlike now when most people collect free $$ for doing nothing, except eating and watching TV.

Most were slim to medium. Why? Because to get money in 1962 a person had to work. Work often means movement and that means NOT siting in front of a TV for 18 hours a day and eating. Movement and work tasks will keep people from turning into the Goodyear Blimp with two legs underneath. Then by the mid 1960's to middle 1970's, some people had figured out that they could not go to work at all and still get $$ and housing vouchers and Food Stamps from the Federal Government.

Fast food was not yet popular. People stayed home and cooked healthy meals.

I've never been comfortable with the fact that homonyms can stand as correct answers: "pedal" and "peddle" are not the same word.

He does explain a lot, but this era wasn't too long after the quiz show scandals of the late 1950s, including new federal broadcasting legislation designed to keep shows honest. I wonder if the producers--and the feds--insisted that the rules be spelled out to keep everything demonstrably above board. "Play it by the book."

The lady contestant Betsy was very elegant and erudite, she would have made a good model then. The guy was such a great player, really on the ball and sharp. Not particularly keen on the celebrity contestants though. My favourites are Carol Burnett, Florence Henderson, Anthony Perkins, Jerry Lewis and Joey Bishop.

The books were first published in the 1930s, so MAYBE. Not sure how popular they were because...I wasn't there.

@Christopher Bingham The books were highly regarded, but since these are showbiz people, I don't think they would have gotten the clue, since the Michael Landon series wasn't on until the 1970's. (This was still "Bonanza" time!)

Betsy Palmer is just as irritating on Password as she is on I've Got a Secret. She can't keep her mouth shut, even when the opposing team is in play. Alan Ludden was right to admonish her more than once during this episode.

Betsy Palmer brought a dynamic energy to Password, she was ahead of her time. Allen"s “admonishments” to her were always playful; I think he liked her.
