Vivian was attentive, alert, witty, and charming throughout every game. Douglas is sweet as they come. Imagine playing 4 rounds of passwords on a half an hour game show. The commercials on TV back then were very short-timed. On TV these days, commercials take up time, and they play one round on a game show. Vivian Vance looks great for 54 yrs old. Vivian was the perfect actress for every show she played with Lucille Ball. XO

Some of us were too poor for our parents to afford such a luxury at home. We had though ancient BRITANICA encyclopedias, salvaged from the dunpster, unfortunately about 30 years out've date! (eg.ADOLF HITLER was listed as the "...Current leader of GERMANY...".). If you were careful though? The old books were STILL usable for general reference. This is obviously for grade school level of course.

My father and I were sitting in the audience for this; I think it was on Halloween night. The announcer, Jack Clark, did a terrible warm-up; his jokes were awful, and he kept referring to "our mess -- ah, show." They only taped the one episode (it was for prime time), and I got the idea that everybody was going to go out together for a late dinner afterward. After the taping was done, Mr. Ludden took some questions. The only one I remember was "How's Betty?" "You want to see her?" Mr. Ludden asked, and everybody went yeah, so out came Betty White, who of course was his wife. Betty hopped up onto the Password table and waved at everybody with both hands, and we all cheered her.

I never saw Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in a movie or anything, but I remember that when Christina Crawford wrote that book about her mother, Fairbanks defended Joan Crawford, even they'd been divorced for many decades. I don’t think he had the fame his father enjoyed-different era; more exciting films. But, I remember him best in “The Prisoner of Zenda” and “Sinbad The Sailor.” I noticed a confusing comment in the replies, so I rechecked. Douglas Fairbanks was Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.’s real father, not his step-father. Anna Beth Sully was his mother. Mary Pickford was his step mother. Always enjoyed both father and son in the movies. I think they would stand up today-and didn’t need a single nasty word in them-just good acting!

@Norm. So what? The nuclear family was extremely common back in the 1950s and the 1960s. In most of those cases, the husband worked and the wife stayed home and took care of her family. That's the way that the family is suppose to be according to God's Holy Word the Bible.

No that’s not quite what he said. He said that the woman Christina described was not the same as the woman he had been married to. Joan adopted Christina years after she divorced Fairbanks who was remarried to another woman and not in the Crawford home. Other stars who knew Joan after the adoption stated that they had witnessed her abusive behavior. Lana Turner stated after Joan’s death that everyone in Hollywood knew but covered it up because Hollywood protected its own. Basically no one will ever know the truth about what went on in Joan’s life. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

You have to realize that game show hosts often met the contestants before the show, and that the mini bio on camera was mostly for the benefit of the audience. So he may have already known beforehand she was married. On the other hand, some hosts either didn't know or pretended ignorance of their contestants. Groucho Marx was notorious for making fun of contestants on You Bet Your Life, partly to get laughs at their expense....and partly, I think, because he was bored and it amused him to make other people look stupid. He acted like he never met contestants beforehand, and probably didn't meet them.

Yes he asked about her husband, but to be fair, the question he asked the man was "are you married?" But yeah, Allen already knows the answers to these questions and is just working off the information he's been given. Of course it sounds sexist to our ears but that's just because we define ourselves and our lives differently today.

I think you're right. Dealing with Desi's infidelities and drinking would have made her tough, plus when she was running the studio in the early 60s, that certainly had its effect. She said once all she wanted to do was acting but she suddenly found herself being an executive, too. I've heard stories about how bossy she could be even with big-name stars, such as Jack Benny, Richard Burton. Certainly different from the lovable Lucy Ricardo, but she did give us so much pleasure and laughter, even though her later shows were not very good.
