In this video I do something different and discuss one of the more obscure aspects of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey; its password system and certain demons that are only obtainable through this system. Here I talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using these demons and what a password-only demon run would play like.

The real question here is how much of Meta-Gore's power increase was from the demon possession and how much was just from wearing a fancy tuxedo? Leaning heavily towards the latter.

My headcanon as a kid was always that the tuxedo was a demon that slipped onto his dead body to supercharge him and to make him look nice as hell. A nice suit can do a lot for someone.

I now headcanon that the reason Meta-Gore's normal attack hits up to 5x is because he goes all "Fist of the North Star" on his opponent, burying them with a flurry of punches

Fairly certain Ishtar is also password-exclusive in OG Strange Journey. In Redux, she was made part of the Womb of Grief area as a boss.

One of my favorite things about your channel is that you're one of the few people who appreciate Strange Journey. It was my first SMT game other than Devil Survivor, and it stuck with me ever since.

@@isenokami7810 I dunno, I remember a lot of people dismissed SJ before Redux came out, outside a few like Nyarly and Nam's Compendium who had more than two nice words about it. Most people I've talked to in the past just call it "the weird military one" and move on.

Dude....SJ is the most overrated game in Megaten. If you are into First person DC then is probably great, but most people aren't and get put off by it, plus no press turn system is a negative on my eyes, didn't beat but got to the 3rd dungeon. Did not like the music, the story was kind of epic to the part I play it but I don't see the appeal.

I never used the password system myself in either game but the intro alone didn't have me surprised with how busted some of the possible demons are. This is an awesome subject to cover Strange Journey :)

Strange Journey was my introduction to the SMT series outside of Persona. I loved the game and the password system was fantastic

A while ago I tried a run where I played SJ as a traditional JRPG, using the alignment reps and having them "learn" skills as they level up by resummoning them occasionally. Unfortunately, the cost of summoning makes this impossible without a ridiculous amount of grinding, so I abandoned it.

I clean while listening to your videos usually. I got less done this time because I'm not used to seeing you. You look nice and I really like your hair. This is one of the few SMT games I haven't played but it seems great. If I ever pick it up, I'll come back to this for reference.

I used the little hehoo but at the same time i use the 99 luck pixie too Just memeing around and also oneshoot demiurge when he is weak to guns with a riot gun + charge + amp and boost gun And also just to mention that the co op pasive is pretty funny to see if you actually use high str demons bc you doing like above 1k damage

I've always wanted to do some sort of challenge run using password demons only, but I never could quite think of a good system for said challenge. Unfortunatelly the obvious of giving the demons the moves they use as bosses doesn't work since most of them are for only usable by enemies, even with the password you can't get their unique skills, but i'm sure that mitamas are a no no if you want any challenge at all.

I did a playthrough with a few password bosses for fun, and it was neat but I wish they didn't all use voice lines from like Poltergeists and other kid/goofy demons.

For the future, I would have prefered if you had split the screen showing your camera footage on one side and keeping the game footage/images on the other instead of fading in and out.

Tbh, I just want to make a Demonica-N and a Demonee-ho so I get a team of demonicas with me, like, "Oh, yo wanna kill earth? get er' BOIS" maybe the demonica with LC and an Amighty attack and Demonee-ho with debilitate, just that if mitamas reset levels, its going to be a pain in the ass to restore the Neutral dud back to normal LVL

Mitamas probably don't reset levels, but I believe you can't fuse the Demonicas anyway so...

While the password demons made the neutral final boss disappointing easy, I don't think I would've finished the game without it. I like Atlus' games, but their endgame balance still needs work

(Posted while at 18:05 in the vid) First of all, you look pretty nice. Second of all, I did NOT know you could put in passwords to get any demon you want in this game. Obviously, when I get to playing this for the first time (I did beat Nocturne some time ago), I won't be abusing this feature, but maybe some time later as a challenge, perhaps I would try it..... Third of all, I also didn't know there were official passwords to get some unique demons. Some of them are total trash, but others are usable... Huh.

Hey Nyarly, which version of SJ do you prefer - original of Redux? I was searching all day which version is better 'cause I want to finish SJ, but there are so many different opinions

I generally suggest Redux, since it's aeasier to get into due to the existence of March to Death, a zero cost app that makes it so if MC dies but you still have demons, it's not game over

I have done a lot of research, and, if anybody is struggling with picking a version -- pick Redux. Yes, re-release lost a bit of atmosphere with new sprites, difficulty, and new UI; OG was harder, and Redux might be a little unbalanced, but pros outweigh cons: characters now have more sprites and voiced, which helps with immersion; a lot of QoL updates, etc. Overall, choose Redux, BUT if you want more "OG" experience, here are a few suggestions: don't use command skills and don't save from the menu (I don't remember how it's called; just save only from stations), limit your passive apps (use only 6 or something around this number), skip Womb of Grief, and disable March to Death. Also, I can suggest playing on Expert, BUT I didn't test it, and I heard it's even harder than OG.

@@zulu9600OG was not harder by much, and higher Redux difficulties make up for the new features And yea, do play on Expert. As for command skills, the only real notable one is the one that lets your team act first no matter what

I have not played any of the smt or persona games myself, but would a good challenge be to learn as few moves as possible? As shown through the no buffs/debuffs series, having a limited move pool can make for quite an interesting challenge, and I believe this would have a similar effect. Getting new demons/personas would count towards that total as well, so it require you to do a lot of planning you normally wouldn't have to do.

Sounds like pain with extra complicated steps. It's not like Pokémon where you can choose to not learn a move. Only a few SMT games I've played let you choose how many you want to equip (Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor), but most of the time you learn them by leveling up. It just doesn't sound like fun to pay attention and avoid learning skills.
