I don't get the controversy that would call for the episode not to be aired. Peppard had a legit concern that could have very easily have been averted if the suits at NBC had explained the forms and rationale for why they needed him to sign. Allen's explanation was perfect and that should have been given to anyone asked to sign those forms. I doubt there would have been any issues if that had been done.
@Cullenfields9 ай бұрын
I have asked a similar question...Why not just simply edit out the rant, so that the show can air?
@thomash.schwed36624 ай бұрын
@@Cullenfields I understand that, especially because, during the closing credits, we occasionally heard Gene Wood mention that a certain puzzle had to be disqualified due to an illegal clue or something. The discussion between George Peppard and Allen Ludden took approximately one full segment. Consequently, NBC could have edited it out and had them play Alphbetics as the final segment with Gene Wood announcing that a segment (the discussion) was removed from the broadcast.
@bluebear1985Ай бұрын
As a result of this rant, it ended up being a short week for George and Elaine, as far as broadcasting them on NBC went. At the beginning of the "first" episode for what was intended to be broadcast on Tuesday of that week, Gene Wood had to record a quick voice-over in post-production which said "The program originally scheduled for this time will not be seen". They had to produce six episodes with a different celebrity pair instead of the usual five.

3:55 He imports pistachios from Iran in 1979? No wonder he's on Password 6:20 Tale: wag, end. Does it matter that that's tail? I just don't get this game; you give synonyms but the rules are so flexible. 7:45 George Peppard's rant starts. 10:00 blow, suck: Deep Throat? 11:00 So you're allowed to say cowpunch for cowboy? blow suck cowboy: Midnight Cowboy? 12:00 and they allow camp for campfire. George Pappard always had a very flabby body but always wore clothing that accentuated the flab! lol I never understood that....

I don't think that keeping a game show honest and watching the contestants is a Police State. There is an old saying, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." I wouldn't have gone on a rant about NBC and Silverman if they were paying me and beneficial to my career. I wonder if this came back to bite Peppard in the butt later.

Didn't seem to hurt Peppard as he would go on to star in "The A Team" which aired on NBC.

I found it amusing that for the rest of the episodes that week, George seemed to go out of his way to kiss NBC's ass. Almost like he was trying to save himself from getting banned from Password Plus. Didn't work.

And remember, this was the first show of the week. And game shows always taped a week's worth of episodes in one day. I'll bet that day felt like forever for everyone involved. Peppard probably got stern talking to after the first taping, with Allen reminding him that he brought him on the show as a favor so he'd make some money.
