Because we're lazy so we say September 11, not the Eleventh of September, which is why month first makes more sense. Also if you look at a calendar you won't look for the date first, you'll look for the month

Why would you look for the month first? You don't know what month you're in? Day changes more frequently, this would logically draw you to need to refer to a calendar to find out what number day it is in the month. I never looked at a calendar and thought "It's the 20th, but of which month?". *face palm*
