Ya know what, I'm gonna say it. The USA did not take it to far with the usage of atomic bombs in WW2 on Japan. If we didn't use them, we would have initiated a naval invasion of the Japanese mainland which would have led to millions more casualties on both sides. The usage of the atomic bombs, while saddening, prevented the deaths of a much higher number of American and Japanese servicemen and the deaths of many more Japanese civilians that would have occurred with an invasion. If I remember correctly, the estimate for an invasion of the Japanese mainland was 1 million American casualties. Casualties include injured and dead but that would likely have been around 250k more deaths. US casualties irl were around 450k I believe. An invasion of mainland Japan would, on it's own, result in more than twice the amount of casualties for the US than actually occured. That's just for the invasion itself as well, not factoring in occupation costs which would likely add another 100k casualties from Japanese resistance fighters at the minimum. So in the world of the atomic bomb not being used the US casualties alone jump from 450k to 1.55m. Again, that's just US alone. Japan itself would likely suffer 3 or so million more casualties during the invasion and resulting occupation. The atomic bombs saved millions of lives even if they had to take some to do it.
