Birmingham City's recent history of tinkering with relegation for many seasons and poor recruitment decisions inevitably resulted in the club being relegated from the EFL Championship to EFL League One at the end of the 2023/24 season.
In this podcast we discuss past recruitment mistakes, and consider what is needed to build a squad for success, prioritizing both skill AND the right character and in doing so avoiding mistakes that have been made in the past.

We have heard today's unfortunate news about Tony Mowbray stepping down as Birmingham City manager and we give Tony nothing but our full love and support to him and his family whilst he continues his recovery. This was recorded a few days ago before we heard the news and we will be doing a video on this in the coming days. Get well soon Tony and everyone at the club is wishing you all the best. What Bowyer said about Hogan was spot on,he said he strolling around without a care in the world while we were losing.that summed up his tenure at Blues.He's not he only one,but when a senior player can't be bothered,what message does that give to other players.?.

Thank you for your comment. The release of the retained list has confirmed the exit of some players who were clearly past their best and ones that never really gave us anything last season. I hope that recruitment will focus on character as well as ability and help us start to build a squad we can be proud of. KRO

As I’ve said previously, the spine; GK, CB, CM,CS all need to be fighters. There are plenty of players who will be wanting to play for Blues and our next manager has to be an ex-player like Rowett, Rosineor, Mobray. We can get promoted straight away with these things in place.!! KROTTEOTR

Thank you for your comment. We definitely need a solid spine to the team and this is something that we lacked last season as there was so much chopping and changing. Let’s hope for the right manager appointment and then get in the types of players we need. KRO

Naturally, wishing Tony and full recovery. He’s done the right thing stepping down. It’s now essential the board get the next managerial appointment spot-on. We can’t afford another mistake. Also, the club need full alignment regarding style of play and type of players we need. Players need to be grafters, fighters and confident on the ball - which means most of last years players have left/can leave.

The manager will be crucial so lets hope we get this right this time as we don't want to be changing the manager again for a long time! Player recruitment is also crucial and as you point out we need some fighters and leaders brought into the club. We wanted a proper reset, well here is our opportunity! KRO

I personally don't think its any coincidence that our most successful team's had battlers in there. Bowyer, savage, Cisse, reaching further back to the Langan/Dennis ( best right and left back combo we ever had) Burns, Gemmill, Latchford, Hatton...The shirt meant something then, and of those players few were on the money these current flip flops are on. My over 50 Sunday league team has more character and battlers than the current squad. A common theme has always come from bluenoses and always will, we can accept losing if the players gave it their all, we can't accept deck chairs on the pitch. We're everyone's cup final next season so we better be ready with some Liam Cooper types who cherish the club they play for!! We need to have players interact with fans more if it be watching training or outreach etc. We shouldn't have to, but players at Birmingham need to have it instilled its not just your pay packet your fighting for its the fanbase more than anything. Allow us to raise our heads up again with pride!!! KRO

Thank you for your comment and a great point you make. It was so obvious that we lacked that battling, never say die spirit and in many games that is ultimately what cost us. You mention some great names and it is players with that type of attitude and character that we need to recruit to help the club progress. KRO

Warning signs were showing after that first international break. We'd beaten Huddersfield and the Albion, then over the next nine games we only gained five points, one win, two draws. The only surprise for me, was the fact we could have still avoided the drop on the last day, although it was out of our hands. This season has been the most disappointing one for me, the new regime were talking about the future, yet these lot just didn't get on board, it was like some of them just gave them two fingers. They hid behind Stansfield in my opinion, take him out and you'd have seen the true picture. I won't go into today's news, but the job just got a lot bigger.

Thank you for your comment David. Last season was a real rollercoaster with all of the great things going on off the pitch and all of the terrible things going on in the pitch. This made it all the more disappointing and in the end we got relegated! Hopefully recruitment over the summer will bring in the types of players we need and get us moving in the right direction. One thing that is hardly ever mentioned- “the will to win” or “hate loosing” this is always what stays with me while playing football. I detested loosing

Thank you for your comment Robbie. I hate losing as well but unfortunately it is something that us Blues fans have become very familiar with in recent years. The club need to take this opportunity for a proper reset and give us a team that we can be proud of. KRO

There is a huge contrast between the desire and team spirit of our U-18/21s and what we saw from the first team last season. The question is why? I wish Tony Mowbray all the best with his recovery. However, I feel that his appointment was a bit rushed. Steve Spooner was very close to getting uus a win away at Hull in the FA Cup and who knows what might have happened if he'd had a few more games in charge. Now that Tony has gone I'd like to see all of the the Rooney/Mowbray/Rowett backroom staff go with the exception of Robbo. I mentioned before that one thing in our favour is our financial stability and that should help us to attract the best players. Not all clubs are that fortunate - just look at Reading for one. Finally I hope and pray that the rumours about Frank Lampard being considered are just paper talk! Thanks for another great podcast guys! KRO

Thank you for your comment and we are pleased you enjoyed the podcast. You make a number of good points about some of the failings of last season especially the lack of desire which was so clear. If we want to be successful moving forward then this needs to be fixed during the recruitment process by getting players with the right character and attitude into the club. The selection of the new manager is the pivot to making everything else work, the club have to get this right. I would like to see Liam Rosenior as our new manager however that will depend on whether he would come down to League One, as he will have plenty of other offers. KRO

Thanks for commenting :) Absolutely, it's a great chance to start with this club in League 1, whilst pushing a team that is well-backed with decent money and currently coming out of an FFP cycle so we can actually spend. Surely a manager would genuinely love to take on the project. Let's see what happens in the coming weeks. We all know social media will be rife with rumours these coming weeks. Very best, KRO!

It is such a shame that Tony will not be coming back to lead us next season however we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in football soon. The club need to give careful consideration to the next manager who will be central to making everything else around to the club work. Let’s hope they get this one right as there was far too much chopping and changing last season. KRO

I reckon Pritchard has that no-nonsense demeanor we need. He just needs to stay fit. Juke obviously as well. That not-scared- to-get-a-kicking frame of mind we definitely need more of, the likes of Laird were on the ground before the tackle even came in last season.

Thank you for your comment Michael. Pritchard was hampered by injuries since we signed him and he needs to get a good pre-season under his belt. He could be a really good player for us next season in League One. We also need to get in some fighters and leaders which we were sadly lacking last season. KRO

As a team we are far too small, no point going down wing and crossing to never win ball in box. This also applies to the defense and why we are so poor at defending corners.

Thank you for your comment Kevin. This is something that myself and Matt have commented on in previous podcasts. We are a very small team so we desperately need some more height in the team and a more physical presence. Hopefully this will be addressed during the summer transfer window. KRO

Obviously since you posted Mowbray has left as we all new would happen , now we can focus on rebuild , we need a mixture of grafters and youth with a keeness and desire to wear that wonderful blues shirt . KRO.

Well I don't really want look back .but if some of those players can't play for birmingham city I'm afraid there career's are very uncertain. without doubt the best supporters in the country honest decent working class .who some spend there last 25 quid on a ticket. to any player reading this the next time your on the pitch just look up at the stands & remember that kro

Thanks for commenting Robert :) Love the sentiment and totally agree sometimes the players need to realise fans work hard for the money to come and support our teams. The matchday experience isn't that cheap anymore so the least they can do is show us some passion and desire! We need to get our manager appointment right and the recruitment spot on and I think we will be okay and in for an exciting re-build season. Very best, KRO!

I believe blues should be taking the best of players in and around league 1, they will know who's who and probably give more knowing they are playing for a bigger club.I still think we should take a punt on langstaff from notts county proven goal scorer in league 2.Ive been following archie grays development and he has come on leaps and bounds, a regular in the leeds side, grandson of the faamous Eddie who was class.kro

Thanks for commenting Alan and interesting insights :) Longstaff seems to be a popular choice amongst L1 teams. Impressive goal-scoring record. I agree, I think we need a balance of the TOP players at this level, younger players and those players with lots of experience who can pick the team up and get us over the line in those scrappy games! Archie Gray has had an unreal season, really impressed with him, and would love to see a young player like that down the blues. Very best, KRO!

I don't know if you have any thoughts on who you want to replace Tony but how about Gareth Ainsworth? When QPR approached him to become their manager Wycombe were in the top 6. After he left they fell down the league. He is a good Division One manager and could probably do a good job at Birmingham. KRO.

Thank you for your comment Stephen. He did a decent job when he was at Wycombe but he is not for me. I think the club will look for someone who can develop an attractive style of play and take us up the leagues so I don’t think that will be an option that the club will consider. KRO

Very sad news about Tony but moving forward The man I hope they would approach first would be Steve Spooner he would be perfect. I know it is a big ask, but his name seems not to be mentioned. If he turned it down then so be it but I would like to know he had been at least approached.

Thank you for your comment Derek. Not to hold him back but Steve Spooner is doing a fantastic job with the young players and I’d be tempted to keep him doing what he is good at. I’m sure we are going to see some of those younger players breaking into the first team next season and we need Steve to keep developing the supply line. KRO

Great video as always. I wish Tony.M all the very best and really hope he is able to make a safe and full recovery. As for appointimg a manager, the board have an incredibly difficult job, we shouldnt be too harsh if they get this wrong, so much can go wromg, we will get this right eventually. I like Liam Roseniour myself, young, great attitude, but to be honest, I really don't have enough knowledge about the criteria for deciding on managerial appointments to really make an informed suggestion. I just know I haven't liked what ive seen for some time, so I don't want more of that. What I imagine we need now is an expert consultant on League 1 football to help with decision making on this appointment.

The fact we are in League One makes it more difficult however, if they can get this right then they can set us up for a good season and beyond. KRO

I think if we was all honest we was exspecting this ,but i hope its not gona b a rush job just to fill the vacancy ,we deserve a good manager after rooney we are such loyal supporters we need a good squad to get us back up and a leader lets hope we find him and take steps forward to b up there again where we belong K.R.O

Disappointed about TM, but football is not all that important despite what Bill Shankly said. It wouldn't surprise me if they asked Gary Rowett to carry on but I don't really think he's the man for the job. I'm surprised at how many people are against giving Jukey another year. Ok he won't play that many games but I think he has been taken on with a view to bringing through emerging strikers like Junior Dixon, and although never prolific he is a good option to have on the bench.

Thank you for your comment. I'm really pleased the Jukey has been offered a new contract. He may not get as much playing time as hen he was younger however he will be a positive influence around the club and is a fantastic role model for the younger players. He also has Blues DNA so he will help new signing to understand the club and to settle in. I think it is fantastic that he will be staying at the club if he accepts the contract offer. KRO

I must admit I don't get keeping jukey ,we don't a club mascot ,it time for a new beginnings with new players as for the lazy show boaters they can move on aswell

Thank you for your comment. I think keeping Jukey is a great decision. He clearly won’t play every game but he will be a great role model for young and new players and he has the Blues DNA. I think he will bring so much to the team next season so I think a great decision to offer him a new contract. KRO

Jukey as a coach maybe , but to pay a fair contract to a player who will not play much , is going backwards , nostalgia will not get us promoted ,we need fast aggressive hungry strikers ,weve had years of no one scoring 20 goals , hence our annual positions ,

Thank you for your comment David. Sad to see Tony not coming back however, I suspect that most of the decisions on the release and retain list were made by Craig Gardner and others. I suspect that some of the decisions were fairly straight forward due to age, salary etc. Hopefully we can get a new manager in place ASAP who can have a big impact on who we bring in as well as being involved in decisions with some of the contracted players. KRO

Thanks for commenting Charley! Apparently Rangers are in for Sanderson but of course this is just the early doors social media rumours. I agree he had a bad season after Eustace left and his attitude seemed strange all season after that. Downed tools almost. Definitely not captain material. I think Bielek shows signs of a better captain. In those last few games he was really commanding and showing leadership. I also think selling Kevin Long was a big mistake. Very best, KRO!

I do despair at some of the names being banded around for the managers job. I agree that right type of player needs to be brought in, but also, we need the right type of manager. I hope the club thinks big and bringing someone who buys into the project and perhaps, is willing to drop down a league and is able to take the club forward. By the way, your analyst on the players etc is spot on!
