Past perfect is used to compare two actions that happened in the past, one happened before the other and to talk about something happened before another time. Isabel Presley had been married three times before she got married Mario. I had been to Cuzco before the pandemic started. Thanks a lot, Mike. I just know how to use past perfect.

Thanks Mr Mike. But some times when I was reading some thing in English I saw past perfect (had +v3)without 2 actions one before the other so why don't we use past simple and in this time when we use simple past and when we use past perfect.
@TeacherMikeEnglish Жыл бұрын
Because we are comparing two past times or comparing one action to another past action that we didn't directly mention.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Both words can be used with both tenses.

Teacher, I have heard many speakers use two simple past verbs instead of using past perfect in a sentence to describe the occurrence of events like- 'The train left before I reached the station'- is it correct to use?
@TeacherMikeEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Past perfect is difficult. Many people use past simple instead in many situations. But good writers/editors know that past perfect is more correct in many of those situations. Basically, unless you are an author/editor, you don't need to worry about it too much.
