Pastel Portrait: In this real-time video I slow things down for a more in depth guide for beginners. I explain my colour theory, how I see colours and explain in detail how to apply this to portraiture. The surface I use and how I attach it to the backing board is also covered. I then I illustrate the 3 stages I work, simplifying it down to explain the colour theory as I go along... all the colours are mentioned. There is a section on how I sharpen pastel pencils and an exercise to quieten the mind and focus your heart.
My passion is to help you to create realistic and soulful portraits. If you found this video useful please give it a like. Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see.

Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Faber-Castell Pitt pencils for the eyelashes... 1122-105, 176, 182 and 199
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581. and the vivid ones I used for this portrait are 788-582, 571
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

Dave this is so crazy , I’ve taken some pastel classes here in the states and no one has really broke it down to mixing and blending as you have. Your a really great instructor and I hope to be able to rejoin your patron channel very soon . I must say the gate with the walking path made me smile & shed a tear …thinking of my mom as she has passed though the gate into eternity. We also loved to visit a special area in the sierra mountains looked much like your photo. A special place for us all. Thank you ❤️

It’s only now, after watching your video, that I can see the green in skin tones. I tried to imagine how your study would have looked if you had only used the red, white and yellow (what “common sense” says the skin tone here is) and I could see it wouldn’t have worked. Then the green just stood out to me, clear as day. I feel like this is a huge step forward in my ability to see colour and understand colour theory. Thank you so much!

Firstly, thank you for your generosity Dave. You really are a master of this medium. Second, this video really is a bit of a master key. To see in real time how you gradually build up the result is invaluable. I was seriously underestimating 1) how light of a hand you need when applying the pastel, it really is a feather touch and 2) how gradually you work. The gentle nature of your technique is really what allows the subtleties to come through I think. Once again, thank you 🙏

Dave, Great video ! I am one of those people that was asking for a slower breakdown of your technique, so thank you. Thinking my "cartoonish" issue has to due with using the caran dache pencils too heavy . Also I never picked up that you use tiny circles, maybe the straight strokes I use lead to a plastic look. Anyway thank you so much I am determined to make a color portrait that is pleasing and not scary ! DAVE

Hi Dave... my technique does take a while to get used too. It is difficult to communicate how I do thing as they just flow. This example is for a fair complexation... when the skin tone is richer you need to add more pigment. The three types of skin tone video will make this clearer. Yeas the texture is created with circles... All the best Dave. 😊🍻

Do you always use a neutral grey matt? Thank you for this excellent explanatory video.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 2 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome... thanks for watching. I tend to prefer dark grey for the colour of my surface, reason being it is a neutral colour and what ever you layer over it it keeps the colour clean and vibrant. I tend to use the board colour as a way to de-saturate a colour by lightly layering the colour over the Pastelmat dark grey board thus the grey board is seen through the colour so toning it down. So for vivid bright colours I add maximum colour and for the shadows and mid tones they are lightly applied😊🙏

Wow, first off, I love this video! :) But im still stuggling a bit with how the colours should lean towards each other in the color-wheel. So when you're mixing "warm red" (leaning towards yellow) and a "olive green" (leaning towards yellow(?)), does that mean that this paris-blue also is warm = leaning towards yellow? Does this mean you can use warm colours to create cold values? If you would use a cold blue, would it then risk turning muddy?
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. I tend to keep the colour selection like my oil painting colours I use... Vermillion Red or Cadmium Red, yellow ochre & lemon yellow, Ultramarine Blue & Burnt umber. Then it is a case of seeing which green will work and change the tones as you go. in oils I mix a green using yellow ochre and ultramarine blue Every portrait is a different skin tone and the lighting can change also the temperature. There is know real easy way to explain, all I do is have a go with these basic colours first then subtle up as I go. Hope that makes sense... so hard to put in words it is a case of experience. 😊🙏
@eikreyia
@eikreyia 2 жыл бұрын

I have learned so much but in the beginning, there’s something I caught: I thought cold blues were towards the green side, and warm blues were towards the purple bc it has more red in it. (It’s taken me a long time to figure all this out, and I googled ultramarine blue and it says it’s warm blue). In the beginning you said a cold blue would be towards the purple side, and now I’m confused. Thanks a bunch!
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Becca, sorry that my explanation has caused you confusion... there is so much information out there, it can really give us mind fog for sure. How I see it and make sense of it is think of the sky towards the horizon is more turquoise as it is warmer as it has more yellow in it. It changes then to ultramarine as it gets colder. On the colour wheel you have a cold blue and warm blue, yellow is considered a warm colour so the blue going towards the yellow is warmer. Now red is also cold or warm... more yellow warmer, more blue its colder like Alizarin . So the Blue going toward the cold side of the red is colder. Now the best fresh purples are a mixture of ultramarine and Alizarin red colour as there is no yellow in it. Mixing a warm blue with Alizarin and it makes it brownie. I know how you must feel after taking a long time to work something out and you here of a different approach... my advice is to go with your gut feeling and stick to that.... what works best for you is the best approach. I try not to over think it. All the very best 💕🙏

Hi Dave why do you use board instead of just pastelmat paper, board is more expensive for one.

Hi Ian... two reasons really I prefer the board to the paper. The paper seems to curl up too much and the surface seems to grab the pastel too much making it harder to blend when I try to create texture..

@@DavePortersArt Very intesresting Dave i have not tried the board only the paper but i assumed the surface would be the same.

Dave...it's excellent to mix colours on the surface in other media...but whole point of pastels is you have most of the shades of tints available readymade...to just dab in...so why would anyone spend more time with mixing slowly on the paper? Is it because you get gradual control of the colours on the surface?

Hi Sujanith, It is all about the subtleties of texture and colour... for me it is less complicated. Sometimes I use pre mix skin tones from Caran d ache on some skin types then change the tones subtly. If you check out my three different skin tones video... I visually show you there. As this is a fair skin tone example... I tend to mix. It is very difficult also to find the exact colour you need and can be very costly... I just like to keep things simple and less expensive. 😊🙏🙏

Mixing and layering on the surface tends to give much more depth and life-like quality to skin tones.
