Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I usually use: numbers...
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581. and the vivid ones I used for this portrait are 788-582, 571
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

My dear God, the way you explain art has to be a blessing and a gift. You really know how to capture your students attention like myself. I’m also one of your greatest students that just love for you teach me something that I have been passionate about ever since I was a little girl. My mother was also extremely gifted artist and I’m determined to follow in her footsteps, I truly was inspired watching her work magic on paper. So that had been over 65 years ago, and I still own one of her artwork which is in poor health from all the years but it’s the only thing that I have left from her artwork and I still admire it and look at it often she really could draw and paint almost anything. God bless her. You remind me of her art style and her approach. Keep up the good work Dave.

Really appreciate the kind words Patricia... means the world to me that my work and approach to pastel painting is being so well received. That is beautiful that you are following in your mother's footsteps. I come from a very large family 6 sisters and 3 brothers who are all creative in their own right. I have been drawing and painting since the age of 12... I am now 60 years old and still have the same inspiration and love for art. Alway learning something new. I have studied philosophy since an early age too and I combine the two to express Gods' energy that flow through all things. Thank you for the words of encouragement... so lovely of you to get in touch. I am so grateful that you are watching my videos. Much love to you and your family 💕🙏

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, Dave! I appreciate it so much. I love using pastel pencils and have thoroughly enjoyed watching this video along with your fab and encouraging commentary. I tend to tense up while drawing (my favourite things to draw are animal portraits and people, though when drawing people I get more nervous about it because it’s so easy to lose the likeness). I really love to draw but so wish I could let go and enjoy the process more without putting too much pressure on myself so thank you for the advice! Your voice is very steady and calming and easy to listen to. Great video! I’ve subscribed!

Hi Crysallis, Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I do love sharing what I have uncovered over the many years of experience. I feel it is important to always empty ones cup, so to speak, so that you have space to grow further. My favourite subject to draw are animals and portraits and I have felt the exact same thing that you are going through, so can really relate to how frustrating that feeling is. How I overcome that was to not name anything I draw. Giving a name to something causes tension as the mind attaches to it and causes conflict. If you connect to the energy of the subject you go beyond the name we attach to it. See the subject as love and draw that. You will be surprised how the details and likeness just seem to happen without trying to make it happen. Wishing you the very best and happy drawing! :-)

Dave, I see a lot of your artwork. Your cover a lot of of territory if that is the word that I should use. You are a fantastic, and a truly gifted artist and you inspire me to draw everyday. I also truly want to draw just about anything and everything. But I will admit that I’m really not good at landscapes, boats, cars, or trucks etc., but I’m willing to touch all my limits and try to find out a determination of what direction I should go with it or whatever I’m the best at. Either direction that I may choose, I will just lay back and enjoy the journey. You are so right about relaxing the mind and going with the flow. I did find out that when I’m not feeling relaxed or uptight than it shows in my work and I might have to get up and walk away from my artwork, I also believe it can be frustrating sometimes but my deep love and passion for art over takes and I keep running back to learn and to do more. When I see you take my mind on a very deep and passionate journey I gain more insight on finding the path to my destination. Once again thank you Dave, you are my very best art instructor, and God please you and your very gifted hands.

Hi Patricia, what lovely profound words, it sounds like we are on the same journey, passionate to just let go and open our hearts and feel the spender of it all. What I love about art is the exact same approach can be applied to everyday life, constantly feeling the joy and bliss of just being in the moment. I call it 'Love in action' ... uncaused feeling of happiness and oneness with life. Wishing you all the blessings with your art journey. You are very welcome, Patricia. Hi Dave... Your Lilly is B.U.TI.FUL !! I do have a suggestive idea for a painting... OUTER SPACE COSMOS!! ... Northern lights, milky ways, shooting stars& star dust, etc. I'm presently painting a portrait of an older couple in my church from photographs... (22" X 25" landscape) with acrylics on canvas. The background is deep space with all types of space activity going on. I'm curious as to how your space paintings would turn out in soft pastels ? Thank you Dave.

@DavePortersArt 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Betty... it is an interesting suggestion... I love everything about space...it has always fascinated me from a very young child. I would spend ages looking into the vast space and revelling in all the majestic beauty of the stars. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to create one soon... I will add it to my future list of work to produce. Thanks 💕🙏

Absolutely outstanding. I been drawing in graphite for over 20 years and only moved to colour in the last 3 or so years. Started with colour pencils but now a total convert to pastel pencils. My next commission is a baby portrait and I intend trying your tips for complementary colours.

Muchas gracias por las palabras amables. Los materiales son importantes, sin embargo, puede comprar el tablero de estera de color pastel y usar pasteles más claros en la parte superior ... He descubierto que la superficie que usamos es la parte crucial.

I remember in art class in high school our teacher told us to use green for the shadows, and we were so confused. All the portraits ended up looking like Frankenstein's monster. 😅 This video is great, thank you! I'll rewatch to catch more details of your process. Keep up the great work!

🤣 Yeah it does sounds weird to start with using green to tone down and to use as the shadow for red.... he/she must have missed out the red part 😉 How I see it is... what ever primary colour we use its the complimentary we use to create the shadow and reduce the chroma or saturation. If you check out my recent uploads I give some real-time footage to explain more. Take care... happy painting and drawing! 😊🙏
