I tell you, these young bluegrass players are the keepers of the flame. Sierra, Mollie Tuttle, Billy Strings, et al. They are the ones who are keeping the best music from the last 50 years alive. The absolutely stunning talent and range of this generation of musicians that are technically "Bluegrass " is so impressive to me. If you are not aware of them you should do your self a favor and look into what these young artists are doing. Truly inspiring.

I enjoyed it. I used to plink around on a mandolin that was given to someone in the family as payment for room and board from a traveling salesman somewhere before 1920. It was already old then. My father used to play "Glow Little Glowworm" and his foot stomping shook the whole house! I guess it made him happy. I learned to play "Mandolin Wind" on it. It sort of looked like a half a watermelon with stripes on it.

80s actually ruled by driving great music off the market. The best progressive bluegrass and country folk artists had to redefine how they recorded and did business. Sierra is descended from that generation--Tony Rice, Chris Hillman, Kate Wolf, Nanci Griffith, and later Alison Krauss. In the MTV-ruled mainstream, there were just a few rare good songs, such as this one.

Anyone who had tickets to one of the canceled shows (which were rescheduled) could attend (until they filled up the venue). It was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen. What’s really interesting is Sara told the audience that she called several people to see if they were in town (or could get to Nashville) in time to play the show with them. Everyone she called including Sierra told her that they had tickets to the show and we’re going to be there anyway. Sierra ended up playing mandolin with Sean and Sara on three Nickel Creek songs that night. It was impressive.

This is the best cover of "Mad World" I've ever heard. Amazing, this tune really stands all alone, unique, there's nothing like "Mad World" in our song collection; beautiful.

You might give a listen to Adam Lambert’s acapella version of this on YT. I think it on American Idol.

Jasmine Thompson and Jennifer Anne also do nice versions but this bluegrass cover is unique. Im hearing some Nanci Griffith in there too. St. Florianer is also worth a listen. Show how good writing transcends genre. Thanks to that I have found Sierra who was was unfamiliar with before this.

None of these somber covers of this song would exist without Gary Jules showing them how it's done... this is a great cover, but to call it unique or say that it stands alone... this isn't a cover of Tears for Fears, because the original song was more pop... this is a cover of Gary Jules doing a cover of Tears for Fears. Just fighting internet hyperbole... best you ever heard, sure... unique, stands alone? Not so much...

She is soooooo talented. I didn’t know this song, but this is a sublime performance by her and the whole group here. Is there anything Sierra can’t do? Her mandolin playing is so off the charts amazing - and perhaps that results in her singing being underrated. She has such a sweet voice and really knows how to use it in a way that seems almost effortless but which draws out such feeling.

Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover (the movie Donnie Darko) of the Tears for Fears song. Besides the end solo, It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song instead of redoing the Donnie Darko version

Really enjoying this version, this kind of voice and any good mandolin play will get me every time. Listening again to them. That last part..... Where the violin kind of bridges the sound of the mandolin, really makes me lean in. Didn't know what it was I was hearing. Thanks for posting. I'd like to find more of their music. Update: Found her, Sierra Hull, subscribed.

I remember I saw her place this in Davenport Iowa in like 2015 and she was talking about how she just heard it and was obsessed with it. I think I’m the same age as her and I found it sad she didn’t get the pleasure of watching Donnie Darko in highschool
