Cliff, thank you for sharing this info about pasturegard. I have a fairly bad weed problem in my pastures and dont have enough cattle to effectively trample the weeds down like judy or salatin would do using high pound per acre mob if cows on a small area. I also cant run a herd of sheep or goats because i use a combo of single, double, and three strand high tinsle electric fence. Good enough to keep cows in but i would he chasing goats all over my county! After doing some homework i can see why you use this product. Triclopyr, and flouroxypyr have some of the lowest carryover rates into manure and soil of most herbicides on the market, have lower groundwater contamination potential compared to something like a picloram or 2,4,D style broadleaf herbicide. The half life in soil on the high end from what im seeing is 90 days. Picloram has been detected in soils for years afterward. No thanks. Dont get me wrong, i hate that i am even going to use herbicides in my fields, but i dont have any other effective, less toxic options. Your info has been vital in developing a strategy to help get my weeds under control giving my cattle more to graze and saving me money by reducing the amount of winter hay to buy due to increased stockpiled forage. For anyone on the fence about pasturegard, look into those main active ingredients, yes its poison, but a very mild one that breaks down in soils quickly and wont be detectable in your soil for years to come. Hope this helps someone. EDIT: even though this product has zero grazing restrictions, i do not intend on spraying weeds in the same paddock as my cattle are in. Instead, i plan to spray the paddock they just previously grazed for two reasons. One, it will be easier to more easily weeds in an already grazed field, and two, to give the product a minimum of 30 to 45 days to degrade and start breaking down as the pasture rests.

I think that weed you are calling iron weed is actually Dog Fennel or commonly known as summer cedar and you are right about it taking over a place if left unmanaged. It will get about 5 feet tall and when it gets mature in the fall it will be covered top to bottom in some very fine fluffy seed.

Cliff thank you for this video. Regenerative- for those of us along this journey, we don’t want to spray chemicals. However if we don’t get the weeds under control we don’t have the forage for our livestock. Of course the question is - why is there a weed? Mother Nature has a very good skill at covering her land with something. I sprayed with a pull behind this year to control Western Ragweed. Your pastures looks great sir.

I really agree with your grass management style Cliff. We are also working to get away from the wholesale spraying of our pastures once the grass is established. As you said, that kills out the clover and other benificial broadleaf plants as well as the undesirables. I don't think that a monoculture pasture with only one type of grass is a smart management practice. Keep the great content coming! I really enjoy it.

The Ironweed on your ranch looks like Dog Fennel, which is a very common name for it. That’s what it looks like in video. Yes, it’s invasive and useless. Only good thing about it is it smells good (subjective) when it’s brush hogged ( as long as you don’t have allergies.)

The weeds at 16:08, what’s your plan to get rid of it? Spray the weed killer and the maybe burn it to get down to the roots?

Thanks for showing how you’re improving your pastures. Do you know if is possible to spray in the fall? We’re in central and west Texas. Certain issues caused us not to get to spray this spring. After the temperatures got so hot we heard the spraying wasn’t too effective. Thank you.

How about running some sheep from time to time on those weeddie pastures. It should lower the weed rate and lessen the chemical load on you pastures and in your cattle. Just sying.

Ouch.......yes rather expensive ! Pathfinder costs 325 dollars per 5 gallons. And you only use a " quart " at a time in a hand pump sprayer. A squirt is all it takes ! ( Of course Pathfinder is for brush / trees )

Why cows don't eat these weeds? If they are hungry and have no other choice, would they eat it? Harmful if they are forced to eat it?
