One thing that really help with moving pigs is a hog board. I use 1/2 plywood I cut it 24x40 and cut two slotted hole large enough for my hand to fit in them. You can push them with it and it creates a barrier between you and the pig. Works real well

Turn your box into a brooder, have Sandra design and build a new box when she has time. Take a electric line in pen u want to go into then open fence up drive box into the area & let them out of box . That’s my friendly suggestion. Or take the green fencing put around the tractor & box open one side to the fence and let them in . That way their is no prob way of her getting punched in the mouth by u Hopfully 🤪lol Have Happy new year u 2 . Todd
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
I may turn the box into a brooder for sure. Like that idea. Need a bigger brooder anyway. We may do that next time. be easier than handing them over the fence. Thanks!

Would yall be interested in raising a couple American guinea hogs next year? I've got a boar and a couple sows and I can let one of the sows get bred if yall would like some piglets. Raise them for meat or whatever you want. They do take about twice as long to get to butchering size and don't get nearly the size of your other pigs. But they are supposed to have excellent meat.

Though im sure you enjoyed the excuse for the fat lip( smile gives it away!) You only learned half the lesson... Don' t gove the pig an opportunity to kick your wife in the face in the first place( unless thats how you want them trained?). You made a great catch and release transport box but all yor missing is a gat into the new pen. Or park the crate at a corner (or other connecting segment) and open pen to width of crate. Wire off. Open up the trap door and let them out. Once out unwirecrate put pen back to normal...work smart not hard when you dont have too. Cheers! Merry Christmas and happy new year! You have inspired me to get pigs in the spring. Love the videos and the learnig with you as you succeed with your new farming methods

Does it make sense to have a vet preg check your sows and gilts to help you guys keep your farrowing dates close together?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. The expense isn't worth it for us. Once we get boars in with them, we'll know everyone should farrow together within about 21 days anyway. AI just causes us a little more uncertainty on hitting them during the heat cycle.

That looks like hard work lifting the pigs, wondering why you don't install a gate you could just park the box and open the door and let them in, personally I would not be strong enough lift those pigs. Also looking at land currently, from a marketing standpoint I'd like to know your opinion. I found 80 acres 2 hours from a major city, 40 acres within an hour, this state can have severe winters. I found 20 acres in a different state within an hour of a large city, milder winters with lots of rain. I know that 20 acres is plenty but I like the idea of 80 acres so I can add cows on it later, also I can lease a lot of it out for hay and put a little Shack next to the creek and rent that out for weekends I'm talking super basic Shack. All the land I'm looking at has creeks. My question is do you think I can successfully Market beef pork and poultry to a large city when I'm 2 hours away? Thank you.
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Would love to put a gate in but we were putting them over into a training pen and it needed to be pretty tight and quick to put up. Not a bad idea though. Yes! You absolutley can market beef and poultry to a large city 2 hours away. I know folks that are marketing their products up to 4 hours away and if you want to get into the shipping game, distance becomes a 0 factor. you'd also be surprised at the people willing to drive. It becomes an "adventure" and good get away to purchase from you.

Do you use hi tensile wire for your electric fence if not what is your spacing between the post
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Do not. I use a gallagher poly wire. Spacing is about 7 paces in open field, 5 in woods with additional posts as needed where the wire is either too high or low depending on ups and downs in the land.
