I calculate that Lyle and Pat’s age is around 26-27 at the time of this recording. This is one of the most amazing piano solos I’ve ever heard bar none. And to think that on a podcast in 2016 Lyle Mays said that he didn’t consider himself to be a Jazz Pianist... whatever. Seriously, he is one of the best to have graced us with his presence in the last 100 years.

The greatest thing is to love music and be loved by it. That's what Pat is all about. Within that realm of love, he expands himself, pushes the bounderies, and goes on the amazing excursions no other guitarists have tried before, brings back what only he can present to us. And to many of us, that's why Pat's music is so unique, catalytic, and original. I don't want Pat to play another same ol' boring bebop phrases, because that's not what music is all about.

Amazing these guys just threw this in as a nod to what critics at the time might call "real jazz" - i.e. the kind of jazz these guys weren't playing, and by inference "couldn't" play. I saw the group do this a year or two before this in Providence RI, and though I was utterly blown away by all their originals, when they did this it convinced the "jazzer" in me that these guys were the real deal, even beyond. A lifetime of inspiration for me.

I speak from (limited) experience: Jazz musicians do not have time to worry about their hair. It may appear lazy, but it is a matter of priority. They wake up, play jazz, and go to sleep. Doing drugs is part of the equation, but not as often as people think (it is too expensive). Pussy is also part of the equation, but not as often as people think (it is too expensive). Either way, the hair is not a priority. Hair will do what hair will do. I play jazz not hair.

I'd love to give this a go. Would be amazing to learn how he thinks, would be a lifelong dream come true.
@stoxarecool7633 жыл бұрын
@@DanielBarberMusic I think you can do it, man! Have you transcribed much before? When I was in school 20 years ago, we would've killed to have KZfaq with every tune available to listen to over and over AND the ability to slow the speed down to 0.5x! That's a major advantage now! Insane to think we were using CDs back then.... not all CD players even had the ability to seek/skip around intra-track. However, having to do things the hard way has its benefits too! Start with the rhythm, a phrase at a time, would be my suggestion. It's totally do-able, and you can do it! Looking forward to seeing you post a video of it someday 😊
@stoxarecool7633 жыл бұрын
Of course...you may have been using tape or LPs... Some of my professors actually still used LPs to play musical examples in class! This was the late 90s/early 00s!
