Never been much into soaps. Eastenders is just plain depressing and unreal. However Coronation Street, in the past, was an exception. Watched it regularly in the days of Elsie. It had a magic then, which has long gone.

She died 17/9/86 aged 62. She was a pioneering icon of British television. Never to be forgotten.

What a wonderful lady she was. Just like all the old stars of that time, Jean Alexander, Noele Gordon - they were big big British stars. We should be very proud of them. Coronation Street is no longer the same today.

There’s actually a lot of talent within the Corrie ranks but nostalgia freaks like you would rather live in the past. The likes of Leanne and Carla are played by fantastic actresses.

@@carlaconnor8347 that's one version. You're partly correct. However it's nothing to do with nostalgia. Corrie in its original concept showed life in the North of England. It was an exciting, ground breaking series, that reduced the upper and middle class nonsense, that came before it. If you'd listened to Pat you'd have understood that. Today's actors in many aspects are just as good. However the storylines are not as believable. Or As strong.

I passed her in a Chinese restaurant in Bury St. Edmunds with her then husband Alan Browning. She'd appeared at the Theatre Royal. She was a classy lady!
