When I first heard Patagonia had a line of workwear, I was skeptical. Patagonia? I kind of thought they were the brand for hikers and hippies. It seemed an unlikely segment to get into, with Dickies and Carhartt dominating the workwear space. The other issue is price, there's a reason you don't see a lot of Filson on job sites or in factories: it's expensive and workers know their clothing will wear out quickly. It has been my experience that workwear is all about the balance of price and quality with people prizing durability and comfort over all.
I will admit however that I used to incorporate a lot of my technical wear into rotation on the job. It was usually lighter and always allowed me to move easily, so maybe it's not such a leap after all!

My dad bought a Patagonia jacket and he didn’t like the zipper. He called them, and got a new jacket of his choice under warranty at no extra charge. I believe that they paid for the shipping both ways too. They will also buy back your used clothes when you want to get rid of them.

@@bigbluemsp As far as I know, and I am quite likely wrong - none of Patagonia's major product lines are made in the US. They're usually made in Asia, albeit they seem to pay their workers a premium, and focus on worker rights compared to other brands. Searched and I can't see a single reference to Patagonia talking about being against guns, so that sounds like rubbish. They may be in favour of keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, but aren't you? They're certainly a lefty brand, but lets keep our facts straight.

I'm a self employed carpenter/builder. No matter what I have spent on clothing I blow through it. I mostly just use second hand regular clothing than workwear. Also I think it is worth mentioning different people destroy the same items of clothing differently. So what works well for years on one person may be trash on another, despite its cost/reputation. Keep it up Carl!!!

Yep same I’ve wrecked clothing at all price points. Self employed I have to strike a balance where I’m looking decent every day. I have found image and they way you carry yourself including clothes you wear is linked more closely to your earnings than people will admit

I have a couple of gigs, stagehand/film tech where I’ll wear ‘workwear’ and commercial construction where clothes go to die so I just wear cheap Costco work pants and hi viz.

Your reviews are so great. Thank you! I’m a general contractor and live on a farm but am also an adventurer. So. I do find I switch out between my outdoor gear and my work gear depending on what I’m doing. I have lots of Patagucci and it can be tough but I’ve definitely moved toward more durable fabrics over the years. I recently spoiled myself with two items from Filson. Their short denim cruiser and this year their waxed canvas vest. If anyone on the job site knew I’d paid that much for a jean jacket I’d never hear the end of it but I’ll say both items have been absolutely outstanding snd put a smile on my face every time I beat the crap out of them.

After seeing your videos, I have purchased two Ferrier shirts and the hemp chore jacket. I am infatuated with them. The shirts are soft and incredibly comfortable from the first wearing. They feel light when wearing them, and you can tell from the fabric that they will last for years. The chore coat feels heavy when you put it on, but is so soft and comfortable and feels very light when wearing it. Amazing pockets. The color on the chore jacket is a beautiful golden hue. Fabulous customer service, also.

I just got a pair of the pants and I absolutely LOVE them! I have not been able to find to a good, comfortable everyday wear/work pant. Other popular brands just don’t have enough room in the thigh and with that said Patagonia nailed the pants. Thanks for the video.

I would highly recommend getting their Iron Forge Hooded Jacket and pairing it with the all-season hemp canvas vest, they pair together perfectly for really cold days and as a mechanic they have taken everything I could throw at them for the last 5 years and they are worn from fall to late spring pretty much daily. The zippers just started to wear out and Patagonia is replacing the free of charge. The lower back pockets is one of my favorite features.

Kinda Cool yeah, Tyndale makes some versa fit jeans at 12 oz which aren’t bad. My go-to in the summer are the 8 oz canvas khakis. I wear their 14.75 jeans in the winter, perfect

I recently made the switch from Carhartt to Patagonia. What I found with my car hurts is that I had to buy multiple pairs to handle the wear and tear. The Patagonia‘s were pricier but I could wear them longer without having to replace them. So either you buy two pair of Carhart for almost 60 $70 or one pair of Patagonia‘s for $89. There’s a few other companies out there like true works that has begun to increase the price point for Workwear. By the way I’m a nurse and using Workwear allows for me to transition to riding my motorcycle every day to and from work. These fabrics have shown versatility for both jobs in a Harley Davidson lifestyle

When I wear out a set of clothes, I look for where the wear patterns are. The goal is to wear everything out evenly just like a proper alignment wears your tires evenly. If I notice that I keep blowing out the knees on my double front pants, I fix this by wearing knee pads. If I notice that I keep fraying the edges of my shirts and pants, I fix this by tucking my pants into my boots, and tucking in my shirt, and rolling up my sleeves. Sometimes, safety makes this hard to do, so I learned to sew, and I now add reinforcements where needed. They don’t look pretty, but they keep me safe, and make my clothes last much longer. If you can’t sew, I started out by riveting my fabrics together. You can use your old clothes as donors for parts. Some of my clothes look like a quilt because they’ve been fixed so many times.

I have a few shirts from Patagonia geared mostly for the outdoor enthusiast but when it comes to work wear I'm brand loyal Carhart. Growing up on a farm Carhart was what we got for Christmas as far as clothing went and I still wear Carhart to this day with no regrets.

Carhartt has the market dominance, at least here in Canada. I can basically be assured that anywhere I happen to be, I can get the Carhartt product I need, in the size I want. That being said, I've been extremely disappointed in Carhartt - their quality isn't what it use to be. As a welder/ironworker, I wear through them pretty hard - and both pant/bibs, the stitching has only lasted 2-3 weeks. That's not OK! I've luckily gotten refunds for that, although when it keeps on happening, its not worth it. I've gotten to the place where its back to company-issue coveralls. (pocket-book loves that) I am quite intrigued with hemp-blended fabric blends - my only hesitation about trying the Petagonia line is that its a hemp-cotton-poly blend. As a welder, I'm dubious of wearing anything poly-blend, while probably over-exaggerated, I have the back thought of melting poly when I see "poly-blend"

You should look into the warranty. Patagonia offers lifetime warranty on all of their outdoor products, which is in line with their sustainability focus. If that extends to the workwear line that could offset the higher price.

Patagonia sizing has been generous for years. Everything is basically 1/2 a size larger than the tag says.

I discovered they'd made some changes when I bought some of their Synchilla pullovers to replace a few I'd had for over a decade. 'Knowing' my size, I place my order and was shocked when I discovered that I was swimming in the size that had previous been perfect. It all worked out because I swapped with my brother's pieces I'd also ordered; he preferred the looser fit and we all lived happily ever after. Still, comparing the same items in the same size made 10+ years apart really highlighted that evolution.

I feel like a lot of guys get stuck in the cowboy mentality of buying one set of clothes for the season. Sometimes, you do need tougher clothes, but a lot of the time you can get away with wearing lighter clothes that feel more like pajamas. Keep blowing out your knees on your pants? Wear knee pads. Keep rubbing a hole in the shoulders of your shirts? Use a creeper. There are the mechanics who wear heavy leather steel toe boots all day, and there are the mechanics who wear tennis shoes. Are you a tank or a scout? Do you like wearing a suit of armor all day, or would you rather wear something more breathable and light weight? I would rather spend extra on something that weighs less, even if it doesn’t last as long; I found this out backpacking. An ounce in the morning is a pound at sunset. Getting up from under a car a hundred times a day takes a toll on your body. Invest in yourself.

Great Video, agree with you on the price point. The quality is very good, ive had my Patagoina hemp vest for a year and although it is for casual use it is still in mint condition. Their Hemp baseball hats are also very very good.

I’ve had two pairs of hemp jeans and I wore them both out because they were so comfortable. I wish more companies made clothes out of hemp. It’s so much softer than cotton and is more durable. I’d love to snag that jacket.

Do the pants shirk at all when you washed them? Did you use cold water and air dry? I really like the way the look. I tear pants up fast, bought a pair of cinch jeans. Wore them twice and ripped a hole in the butt…

@@1dyepaint I washed those pants like normal. Washed In cold or hot water and threw them in the dryer once a week. The 80% hemp jeans didn’t shrink and only wore out after 5years of almost everyday wear.

Great informative video! Searching for the farrier shirt now. Aussie brand Rip-curl used to do hemp shirts and they were hard to kill. You’re right about pricing: I’d baulk at wearing some of this stuff for rough work and tend to keep it for casual wear. Edit: just looked and that’d be a nope at $150 here. Can’t see the value apart from the label. They’d need to be hand-tailored by commission to the crowned heads of Europe for that sort of dough.

Work on concrete screwing base cabinets together and you'll DEFINITELY slip a kneepad in that sucker. Got it because I HATE those straps always dig into back of your legs wearing shorts or jack up your pants and are VERY uncomfortable. Patagonia is VERY nice and comfortable. Definitely worth the $. Can't really put a price on to soft feel and comfort you get compared to slightly similar priced Carhartt double knee pants that are $60. Can find the Patagonia for around that sometimes.

I think the price might be acceptable if you account for the lifetime warranty and make use of it. After reading through the warranty text from Patagonia I noticed that certain types of damages (like oil stains) might not be covered while rubbing off or tears can be covered. If you play your cards right you might actually get 4 pair of pants in the end xD

I agree their price will and is the biggest factor. Even where I work Carhartt isn’t quite as popular as it used to be since their price seems to be getting higher as time goes on. I’m seeing a lot more less expensive brands ex. Dickie’s, Berne, Red Kap, Riggs because people don’t want to spend a fortune on something that’ll get shredded, regardless if it has little handy features.

@@adtemporary69 idk, I’ve been buying lots of Wrangler Riggs clothing the last couple of years for my job on the railway doing bridge maintenance & repair and they hold up incredibly good, and quite less expensive as Patagonia and carhartt. You do get what you pay for, and with Wrangler Riggs I pay for durable quality work clothes that are definitely on par with carhartt and definitely Patagonia

Your evaluation of the pants was spot on. I've been wearing double front Carhartts for 40 years, so that's how I compare. The Patagonias are very comfortable, but the year pocket is weird, and the thighs aren't double. Otherwise they're great. I haven't used mine enough to know about the wear. If I'm going to trash my pants, I'll grab one of my numerous old pairs of Carhartts.

90% of clothes on the market will allow you to climb Mt. Everest. But, I do feel more comfortable wearing Patagonia because it fits my body better. I have found that comfortable clothes give me more energy through the day, and make me less likely to throw a wrench through a window.

I love these pants and the 5 pocket ones, too. Once I figured out the sizing, they are my favorites, by far. The quality and consistency in sizing is significantly better than Carhart or Dickies, and the durability has been twice what I’ve gotten out of Carhart. Turned out to be worth the money to me. I’ve added a couple pairs of the Duluth firehose flex pants to my rotation and am curious to see how they last in comparison. Keep up the good work.

@@richeyrich2203 They're holding up okay. I find that I don't wear them as often as the Patagonias, because I don't like the fit or the feel as much. On the plus side, they do have the more conventional pockets, which is nice, and the stretch in the fabric has its moments. Surprisingly, the Duluth pants are more prone to staining than the hemp Patagonias. I have two colleagues who have very strong negative opinions on the Duluth pants. Much stronger than my own. They argue that they are way too expensive for their durability, and can be outworn by Dickies or Key for half the cost. Considering that they are basically the same price, I'll probably buy more Patagonias when I need to replace some.

I use the knee pad opening all the time. And patagonia has carhartt beat because they have a consistent 4" opening at the knees vs. carhartt where one side might be 2" and the other side is 1 ", and these are the made in the USA carhartts too. Patagonia did offer a made in usa denim jean and chore coat too, seems like they stopped carrying them though. I picked up 4 pairs of the jeans and jacket on sale. The fit on every pair was exactly the same. I made my own custom cut knee pads out of an old thermarest pad I didn't use anymore.

Also they have a repair policy so you can send in or if you have a store near you take the item in and they will repair it. It’s an investment in clothing instead of just a one time price.

The reason I like Carhartt is because of the fit. In relaxed fit Large Tall fits me great. That’s all I but is Large tall relaxed fit. Patagonia doesn’t have tall sizes. I usually can’t wear an XL because it doesn’t fit right. I need 36 inches sleeve and torso length, 44 inch chest. According to Patagonia work chart large is too short and XL will too big in the chest. That’s why Carhartt works for me best

I feel like Patagonia is giving a couple more options or workwear because a lot of workwear is kinda designed for rural individuals and I think they are making this for people who don’t want the rural worker stigma about wearing brands like Carhartt and Dickies. ( I am personally a fan of Carhartt but I know some people who prefer the look of something more hiking inspired and care about the environment) love if you could like or respond I subscribed today and love your videos.

I skidded down the asphalt at 25mph on my back wearing a Patagonia polyester fleece after a skateboarding accident. It showed no signs of wear. Not a thread was damaged. I wore that sweater every day, 9 months a year, for 4 years, and it still looks brand new. They use ykk zippers too. Wal-Mart clothes will work; but for how long?

Hard market to crack. I accidentaly cut a pair of Duluth Firehose pants with an angle grinder. Seven years of hard wear later and that tear is still the same size.

Their denim jacket is very nice jacket and it’s made in the US which is the main reason I bought it. It does run big like the other stuff they have I usually wear and xxl but I bought a xl and still had to run it through the dryer so far been a great jacket

Cool review. I wonder, if they address the issues you raised and develop a following, whether they'll be able to build an argument for price per wear. I train jiu jitsu and, while I wear the Dickies/Carhartt level gi, the guys who own hemp gis definitely wear them more often and get a ton of use from them. Hemp is not nearly as color fast as cotton though so I imagine these will look and feel like they have been broken in for years within a few washings.

The problem is carhartt quality. It has steadily gone down over the past 10 years. You have to try on everything and depending on which country it was made in, I wear anything from a medium to x large.

double front pants don’t match any knee pads I’ve found, but flexible foam board or egg crate material cut to size works great in there

I have knee pads in my double knee carhartts. The neoprene set from Duluth Trading is my favorite. They stay in through the wash. I guess they stay in for the life of the pants because it hasn’t caused any propblems and I don’t see a need to take them out.

I wore my gortex Arc'teryx jacket on the job getting used a lot and taking a beating for about a decade before it delaminated and lost it's waterproof capabilities. $400 well spent IMO.

I wore Carhartt bibs all year round for a decade. Depending on the job at hand, most guys can get away with lighter clothing, and this is where I feel like the “sports car” technical brands shine. My Carhartt jacket and bibs weigh 10lbs, clean and dry. When I’m not in the thorns, or around abrasives like brick block, I like to wear lighter clothes. I used to wear Carhartt’s working on cars, but I switched to a lighter weight fabric, and I am less tired at the end of the day. Some guys have to wear thick duck for their job, but for you overkill guys wearing Carhartt’s as a framer or a machine operator, give lighter clothes a chance. I saved a lot of money early on by buying my pants at the goodwill. I don’t feel so bad tearing up a pair of pants that only cost me $5.

I’m all for the hemp, the planet, and the quality but I’m 130 lbs so I know I’ll swim in any of this new line. My best recourse was a M's Long-Sleeved Workwear Shirt from years back found on Worn Wear. It should be excellent

I would appreciate a segment of all natural work wear, as a welder natural fibers are required due to the fact that it burns instead of melts. Other then that I found a company that makes some cool pants I'm hoping to try called prison blues, there a company in Oregon and all the stuff is made by inmates working towards a second chance at life, I think you would really appreciate there stuff

The Patagonia price is for a niche market who is willing to pay it. I don’t think they’re going for the every day bread and butter construction worker so much as the working class among their current following and whatever share of the Venn diagram they can snatch outward from there. If it’s more comfortable day to day one might pay the premium if all else is pretty close to equal. If they somehow end up being reviewed as even more durable AND more comfortable they’ll have a market share for sure.

My problem with all the pants like this is the cut. The legs are always cut so wide. If I could get a slim fit version it'd be perfect.

Great reviews 👍 I think Patagonia will sell to their fans, most of whom are poseurs. And like Fjallraven, whilst there are much cheaper alternatives that are less expensive and do the job as well or better than cheaper alternatives, (and like watches) if you can afford something different, crack on.

@robert warner no , hemp don’t get ya high. But it’s extremely strong. They used to make rope for ships out of hemp. Great stuff.

Any product you purchase from Patagonia has what they call an iron clad guarantee warranty on all their products (besides underwear and base layers) Iron clad guarantee says we guarantee everything we make. If you are not satisfied with one of our products at the time you receive it, or if one of our products does not perform to your satisfaction, return it to the store you bought it from or to Patagonia for a repair, replacement or refund. Damage due to wear and tear will be repaired at a reasonable charge. From experience I have purchased a pair of pants use them for x amount send them back for repairs or if they are no longer functioning properly you send them back and they will send you a brand new pair of equal value. Does any workwear company have a similar guarantee on their products that Patagonia does?

Just got my noninsulated overall bibs, your right in that they fit big I’m 5,11” I didn’t think I’d need to buy a short. Waist fits about the same as they’re other clothes. I go through two pairs a year hopefully they hold up! Cause I love the Patagonia line

Patagonia has a lifetime warranty and will buy back your clothes if you don’t like them. But, the lack of a hammer loop on the pants keeps me a Carhartt pant user.

Great review. I tried some of these on in the store and didn’t much care for them. They seemed to be made for posers, the kind of guy who drives a vintage Land Rover because he has a “farm”, otherwise known as a tax dodge. I much prefer LC King and their Pointer brand if I want to be cool. They are American made, high quality, and a family owned business. I’m not connected with them at all except as a customer.

Ive worked with several guys over the years that had the kneepads stuck in their Carhartts, it was never for me though. Have you tried 1620 workwear yet? Im onto two pairs of their pants now, made in the USA and of Cordura. Im also one of the weird dudes on site in the nice wool fitted clothes, if you arent "trade sized" a lot of these boxier shaped clothes just end up chafing all day

Why hiker gear could be better than traditional work gear is because cold weather hiking gear is just as cold resistant with less bulk but more expensive.
