HISTORY about Kite Flying & Basant Festival
In Pakistan, #KiteFlying is often known as #Gudi-Bazi , #Guda-bazi or #Patang-bazi. Although kite flying is a popular #event for the celebration of spring festival known as #Jashn-e-Baharaan (lit. Spring Festival) or Basant, all color kites are flown to represent the arrival of spring. which makes the sky colorful even though kites are flown throughout the year as a fun activity, Basant festival brings people outside or at the roof tops and marks the end of cold winter.
#Amritsar, #Lahore, #Rawalpindi , #Gujranwala #Sialkot #Quetta and #Kasur are the traditional areas where kite flying festivals are held.

The #Basant Kite Festival has been a historic spring time kite flying event during the #BasantPanchami festival in the #Punjab region in India and Pakistan.

According to the Punjabi calendar it is held on the fifth day of lunar month of Magha (in late January or early February) marking the start of spring.
Kite fighting is a very popular pastime all around Pakistan, but mostly in urban centers across the country (especially Lahore).
The kite fights are at their highest during the spring celebrations and the fighters enjoy competing with rivals to cut-loose the string of the others kite, this is popularly known as "#Pecha".
During the #spring #festival, kite flying competitions are held across the country and the skies are colored with kites. As people cut-loose an opponents kite, shouts of 'Bo kata' ring through the air. They reclaim the kites, after they have been cut-loose, by running after them.
This is a popular ritual especially among the youth (similar to scenes depicted in the Kite Runner which is based in neighboring Afghanistan).
Kites and strings are a big business in the country and many types of strings are used: glass-coated strings, metal strings and tandi. However, kite flying was banned in #Punjab due to motorcyclist deaths caused by glass-coated or metal kite-strings.
