From Wiki:
"Patches", (first recorded by Chairmen of the Board), was a UK number 2 and a U.S. number 4 in 1970, and was nominated for a Grammy in 1972. This disc sold over one million copies, and received a gold disc awarded by the R.I.A.A. in September 1970, just two months after its release. It was Carter's third million seller.

I don't know how i never heard this song before. Oh because the radio plays the same old crap day after day year after year with there top 40 format. Even the oldie stations are set up as a top 40 playlist format. They just play old top forties And even in that format they really only play the top 10 songs over and over and over and over. That's why on all the oldies station you'll here nothing but the beetles the stones and crap like that. You'll never here the smaller names that were in the music back then. The radio industry in general took a nose dive inn the last 20 years. New Pop radio has the same issues. That's why you get crap like Cardi B played over and over and youll never hear anything from any other artist. Top 40 format destroyed radio.

My moms was my "Patches"! She came from dirt to Chicago and birthed us kids. She worked hard to keep a roof over our heads despite all the odds against her. She passed on in June 1994, but her memory will live on through my behavior and the way I treat others. Peace be unto you mom...Love You and Miss You!

For some of us this song brings back the memories. The memories of being thrust into the role as the head of the family, and the responsibility of knowing you've got to pull the family through. I did , with God's help. Sometimes patches is a girl.

D Jablonski Thank you for your kind words...yes it was tough, I was my mother's right arm by the time I was 12 years old. She was a single mom with 4 kids to raise, She worked evenings so I had to come straight home from school to cook for my younger siblings, make sure they were bathed, homework done and ready for school the next day. The day I turned 16, I skipped school, applied for a job and began helping my mom financially too. As I got older I regretted being given so much responsibility at such a young age, it felt like I'd missed my childhood. Then at 27, my first child was born, he has special needs, I was devastated but never afraid, I realized that my childhood made me feel ready for whatever came my way...you're right, "tough as nails"!! :-)

I'm in a "patches" situation right now. This song gives me strength to keep going. In a weird way, I'm happier than I've ever been in my life now that I've lost it all. The life I'm living today is hard, and I don't have a penny to my name, but at least its REAL.

This was one of my daddy's favorite songs. My Hero, my daddy was 83, he passed in September 2021 and I'm still playing this song for my Beautiful memories. My grandfather was a Sharecropper and this song must have reminded my daddy of his daddy.❤

Being born in Alabama I know all too well how this song goes if I listen to it everyday it would bring tears to my eyes again and again times was rough back in the day I'm just 63 but I remember picking cotton corn holein the garden this was back when America was really good and strong and people cared for one another now it's got to if you're not the political person they are they don't like you and it's mostly the Republican Party who's causing this trouble America is going through now I was born in 1958 when America was great but since then one person has caused so much turmoil in this country that were fighting amongst ourselves just like the Civil War all political sad

this reminds me of my father and i. we never had much but both my parents did their best for me. they never pressured me and just told me to do my best, nobody could expect anything more and they would be proud of me whatever i did. im typing this in med school the day before my last exam for the semester. it makes me want to give them and ring and thank them tbh. dont forget to let the people who love you know that you appreciate it, one day it may be too late. peace!

My father did more than most men could do standing without the use of his whole body and he never once complained. Strength is within, so when life would "kick you back down" just lift your head and get the job done like his father and mine used to say.

my father died when i was early in my 12th year, my brothers, each older -stepped up.Carlos was a young officer in the Army,Benjamin a high school kid.Gr8 role models, thank you each Carlos and Benjamin.Losing my father early taught me the value of being truly present for one's own children, not married to a job nor to a bottle.i'll not vilify nor deify my father for he was in his essence a good man. i learned the value of maintaing good health,to balance things with the highest priority on folk, own's 'own' and others. hendoku iyaku-changing poison into medicine Nam Myoho Renge Kyo
